Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Anne Hathaway was born in 1982, but do you know what sign of the Zodiac she was born under?

Answer: Scorpio (November 12)

She was born on November 12, making her a Scorpio. This sign is often thought to be both secretive and passionate, which does fit with Anne's life. Actors often choose other roles to portray so that their own lives are more private. Anyone who has seen her in "Les Miserables" knows that she is a passionate soul as well. What sign is she in the Chinese Zodiac? She was born in the year of the Dog, giving her the traits of being honest and loyal.
2. In 2018, Anne was in a movie with a group of other talented women that was a remake of another male-dominated pair of films starring Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack in 1960 and Brad Pitt and a group of wonderful actors in the first remake of the Sinatra film in 2001. The name of Anne's 2018 movie is "Ocean's _______".

Answer: 8

The first two movie versions of this tale were about a heist pulled off by a group of eleven men. The Brad Pitt retread was so successful, it spawned two more remakes ("Ocean's 12" and "Ocean's 13").

In 2018, Director Gary Ross decided to celebrate girl-power and created a story revolving around the sister of the protagonist of the "Ocean's 11", "12" and "13" stories. The premise here is that Debbie Ocean, played by Sandra Bullock, has gathered seven of her talented and morally-ambiguous female friends to pull off the heist of the century at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala in New York City. Debbie has just gotten out of jail herself, and is trying to figure out how to go on after her older brother Danny's death. Anne Hathaway plays Daphne Kluger, a socialite who wears the lovely jewelry that the Ocean's 8 crew intends to steal. The movie is a fun romp, and though critics claimed that it was not as good as its predecessors, it did well at the box office and showed off the talents of a bevy of gifted actresses.
3. Anne Hathaway was born in New York, but she grew up and was educated in another northeastern state in the United States. I don't know if she had a green thumb, but can you tell me which state Anne spent much of her youth living and studying in?

Answer: New Jersey

Anne Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, NY. She started school at a Montessori school in Brooklyn, but her parents soon moved to New Jersey, the Garden State, where Anne finished elementary, middle and high school, graduating from Millburn High School in 2000.

She was active in different extracurricular activities during her time there, including soccer, drama and chorus. All of these would stand her in good stead when she decided to pursue acting as a career, shortly after high school.
4. Has Anne been typecast? Her characters have sometimes seemed to have stepped out of a fairy tale, the young woman who ends up being a princess, or almost, or at least has a beautiful wedding... In which of the following films does Anne play a role that is decidedly does NOT have a storybook happy ending?

Answer: Fantine in "Les Miserables" (2012)

Anne Hathaway's early career did seem to be in the mold of "young heroine gets married", or modern-day Cinderella. (Both of the "Princess Diaries" films and "Ella Enchanted" seemed to fit that pattern, albeit with very good writing, direction and casting.) Even her attempts at comedy have sometimes leaned on the wedding-as-a-great-backdrop-to-a-story mold, with "The Bride Wars" being a somewhat forced attempt to produce conflict between two lifelong friends who end up getting married on the same day in the same venue after having been proposed to on the same day as well.

"Les Miserables" was definitely different. Victor Hugo's tale of Jean Valjean (played by Hugh Jackman), a man unjustly imprisoned who fights for justice in his society at the time just after the French Revolution, provided Hathaway with the part of her career, up to that point. Fantine is a young woman forced into prostitution through a series of heartbreaking events. She does everything, up to losing her life, to care for her young daughter, and shows off her singing talents as well. The film focuses on different character with whom Valjean comes in contact during the years after the French Revolution, and it is a tour de force. Some critics hated the "live singing" method used in the movie, which had the actors sing their parts as if it were a stage play, without edits or enhancements. Others praised it as brilliant. Whatever you think, the movie was filmed beautifully, and Anne gave an intense and richly-portrayed performance.
5. Anne Hathaway got the chance to co-host the 83rd Oscars in 2011, showing off her dancing and singing talents. Who was her co-host?

Answer: James Franco

Anne's performance as a host of the Oscars was better received than that of her co-host, James Franco. Some thought he was lackluster and bored, and as a result, boring. Perhaps it was because that very same year he was nominated for the movie "127 Hours", in which he played a hiker who had run into trouble while trekking in a deserted area, falling into a crevasse and having to hack off his own arm to survive. Anne, however, sang and danced beautifully, showing off talents that many didn't know she had.

The other men mentioned as possible co-hosts at the Oscars were all Anne's co-stars in "Les Miserables".
6. Anne Hathaway really does have a way about her. Not only has she given out awards at the Oscars, but she has won accolades as well. Which of the following awards was NOT earned by Hathaway?

Answer: Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Voice Over By an Actress in "The Family Guy" for the role of "Princess Penelope" in "Once Upon a Time in Springfield"

Anne Hathaway has actually won all of the awards listed above, but her Primetime Emmy was for work she did in the TV show "The Simpsons". She has never appeared as "Princess Penelope" on "The Family Guy". The Emmy was her first big prize, in 2010, and the others listed were all for her work in "Les Miserables" in 2013.

In addition to the wins listed here, she has also been nominated for myriad awards from the 2000 Teen Choice Awards for her TV work in "Get Real" to the present.
7. If Anne's name sounds familiar to you, it shouldn't surprise you. She really was named after the wife of a famous dramatist and poet of yesteryear. Who is the famous author whose wife is Anne is the namesake of?

Answer: William Shakespeare

Anne Hathaway's parents were Gerald Hathaway (a NY lawyer specializing in labor cases) and Kate MacAuley Hathaway (a former actress). Though her parents say that they did not want to encourage Anne to pursue acting, and they actually tried to discourage her from pursuing this passion, their naming her after the wife of the most famous playwright in the English language was probably not a very good choice for pushing her away from the performing arts.

Anne first caught the acting bug when she saw her mother perform as Fantine in a stage performance of "Les Miserables". And the rest, as they say, is history.
8. Who did Anne Hathaway marry in 2012 in California?

Answer: Adam Schulman

Anne Hathaway married her husband, actor, businessman and jewelry designer, Adam Schulman, the same year as her film "Les Miserables" was released. They had known each other for some time, but only started dating in 2011 after each realized the other was single. They were married in a traditional Jewish ceremony, and Anne's beautiful wedding dress was widely admired. The two had their first child, Jonathan, in 2016.

If the name Rafaello Follieri is familiar to you, it is because Anne was involved in a relationship with the Italian real estate developer from 2004 to 2008. Follieri was arrested for defrauding millions from his investors for having posed as someone with strong ties to the Vatican in Italy. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to four and a half years in 2008. Hathaway's diaries (in a strange instance of art imitating life) were used as evidence in the investigation against Follieri and they broke up before his arrest. Hathaway was not charged with any crime.

The other two people mentioned as possible spouses were never married to Anne. Shakespeare was married to another Anne Hathaway, in 1582. Anne Hathaway has been a supporter of LGBT rights, including marriage rights, but has never been married to singer Connie Francis.
9. Anne Hathaway gave a moving performance opposite Heath Ledger in which movie?

Answer: Brokeback Mountain (2005)

The only movie that Anne has appeared in with Ledger is 2005's "Brokeback Mountain". Anne played Lureen, the wife of Heath's character's (Ennis') secret lover, Jack, (played by Jake Gyllenhall). Ennis' wife Alma, was played by Heath's real-life partner at the time, Michelle Williams. The story tells of two outwardly "normal" cowboys who meet and discover their great love and attraction for each other, and then hide their relationship for the next 20 years, due to the rigidity and lack of acceptance of homosexuality in the society of that time.

Of the other movies listed, Heath Ledger was in "The Dark Knight" (2008) as "the Joker". Ledger did not appear in the subsequent "Batman" movie that Anne was in, "The Dark Knight Returns" (2012), because he had already died of a drug overdose when it was made. "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006) was a movie that Anne starred in as Andy opposite the boss from Hell, Miranda, played by Meryl Streep.
10. Anne is well known for her charity work. Which of the following is one of the causes that Anne has worked hardest to support throughout her professional life?

Answer: The Rights of Women and Girls

Anne Hathaway has long fought to protect the earning rights of women in Hollywood and in the workplace. She has fought to prevent child marriage all over the world and has served as a UN Ambassador to promote and sponsor the education of girls in many underdeveloped countries.

She has also worked hard for LGBT rights and for parental leave for both mothers and fathers.
