Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Crazy in Love
Answer: Beyonce
Her birth name was Beyonce Giselle Knowles. She was born in 1981 in Houston, Texas. Shortly after her high school years she was in an all girl group called Girl Tyme. After various line-up changes that group became Destiny's Child. It also went through various line-ups, but helped launch Beyonce to stardom.
In 2003 she started a solo career that has brought her mega-star status. In 2008 she married fellow music star Jay-Z. "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it), "Halo", and "Crazy in Love" have been number one singles on the U.S. Billboard charts for Ms. Knowles.
2. The Woman in Me
Answer: Shania Twain
She was born Eileen Regina Edwards in 1965. Windsor, Ontario, was the place of her birth. Her parents divorced, and her mother remarried a man named Jerry Twain. Shortly thereafter she legally changed her last name to Twain. In her late teens she sung in local cover bands. Tragically her parents were killed in a car wreck just after she graduated high school.
This event lit a spark and she decided to put all her effort into becoming a professional singer. She changed her first name to Shania, a Cree Indian word meaning "on my way". Shortly after she signed with Mercury Records and her career took major flight. "Up" and "Now" have been number one singles on the U.S. Billboard charts for Ms. Twain.
3. Firework
Answer: Katy Perry
Her birth name was Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. She was born in 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents were both highly religious. Gospel/Christian music became her main source of musical expression. Her career actually began as a Christian music artist.
She took her mother's maiden name of Perry to avoid confusion with the actress Kate Hudson. 2008 marked her breakthrough with the single "I Kissed a Girl". Hit after hit followed, and culminated in her critically acclaimed Super Bowl halftime show in 2015. "Dark Horse", "E.T.", and "Firework" have been number one singles on the U.S. Billboard charts for Ms. Perry.
4. Don't Cha
Answer: Nicole Scherzinger
She was born Nicole Elikilani Valiente in 1978. Her place of birth was Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents separated shortly after she was born. Her mom remarried a man named Gary Scherzinger, and her last name was legally changed. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky, when Nicole was six.
She graduated from Youth Performing Arts School in that area. In the early 2000s she was lead singer in an all girl group called Eden's Crush. After their short lived existence she became lead singer for The Pussycat Dolls. That group had a six year run of moderate success.
She then launched a solo career, but without much fanfare. However, she did find a highly profitable market in television. Co-hosting shows such as "X Factor" and "The Masked Singer" has brought her more prominence than her singing career. Between both groups and her solo career "Stickwitchu", "Buttons", and "Don't Cha" have been top 10 singles on the U.S. Billboard charts.
5. This Kiss
Answer: Faith Hill
Her birth name was Audrey Faith Perry. She was born in 1967 in Ridgeland, Mississippi. She was an adopted child. In her late teens and early twenties she played in some local bands and had jobs like working at McDonald's. She then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in hopes of being signed to a record label.
She auditioned to be a back-up singer for Reba McEntire. She failed to get the job, however. Crazy as it seems the singer who beat her out was killed along with six other band members a couple years later in a plane crash.
Not long after she signed a deal with Warner Bros. Records, and went with Faith Hill as her performing name. In the midst of her stardom she toured with country mega-star Tim McGraw, and the two started dating. They eventually married, and stayed together for over 20 years. "Breathe", "It's Your Love", and "This Kiss" have been number one country singles on the U.S. Billboard charts for Ms. Hill.
6. Stormy Weather

While living in Pennsylvania, Lena learned about music under the tutelage of jazz musicians Billy Strayhorn and Billy Eckstine.
She began her music career on the chorus line at The Cotton Club in Harlem, New York. She then became a nightclub singer with various bands. This led to a longstanding career in musical theater, movies, and television.
Much of her work was done prior to the existence of musical charts and the tabulations of record sales. Ms. Horne died in 2010 of congestive heart failure at age 92.
7. Irresistible
Answer: Jessica Simpson
Jessica Ann Simpson was her birth name. She now goes by her married name Jessica Johnson. She was born in Abilene, Texas, in 1980. Coming from a devout Baptist family, she spent her teens singing in church choirs. During this time she auditioned for a spot in The Mickey Mouse Club.
She lost in the final rounds of the auditions to the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. She initially began her career as a Christian artist, but it is said she was deemed too sexual for the genre because of the size of her breasts. Columbia Records signed her, and success soon followed.
Her marriage to Nick Lachey of the boy band 98 Degrees helped further elevate her star power. It led to acting roles, and her own cosmetic and clothing lines. The couple eventually divorced.
She remarried and basically became a businesswoman and mother. "I wanna Love You Forever", "Take My Breath Away", and "Irresistible" were among her bigger hit songs.
8. Nasty

In the mid 1980s she embarked on her "pop icon" singing career. For a nearly 20 year span she dominated the airwaves of the music industry. Her only falter came during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2004. A "supposed" wardrobe malfunction exposed one of her breasts to millions of viewers.
Her career never fully recovered from that moment. "When I Think of You", "That's the Way Love Goes", and "Nasty" were number one singles on the U.S. Billboard charts for Ms. Jackson. She was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
