Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Susan Sarandon's very first job as an actress came almost by accident. She accompanied her husband to a casting call; he didn't get the part-she was offered one instead. She played the hippie girlfriend of a low-life drug dealer, who ended up dead, killed by her father. She went missing, and the father then went out in search of her. Which film was it?

Answer: Joe

"Joe" (1970) was a controversial movie, with a shocking and violent ending. The film starred Peter Boyle and Dennis Patrick. Susan was a graduate of the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., with a degree in drama. The only thing these films have in common is they were all released in 1970.
2. She met and married her first husband at the Catholic University of America. He eventually got a job in films after several years of television work. (It was a juicy part, and he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor for it. The film was 1975's "Dog Day Afternoon".) Who was Susan's first husband?

Answer: Chris Sarandon

Hope you got that one right! Chris and Susan were married from 1967 to 1979. The couple worked together just once, in a television movie called "The Satan Murders" in 1974. Chris Sarandon played bank robber Al Pacino's lover Leon in "Dog Day Afternoon". Susan was born Susan Abigail Tomalin, and she kept her husband's name after their divorce. The other three actors mentioned all appeared in "Dog Day Afternoon".
3. Susan did a lot of television in the ensuing years, including several soaps. She appeared on "Search for Tomorrow" and the short-lived "A World Apart" in the early seventies. In 1975, she landed one of the lead roles in a film that has become one of the most popular cult classics of all time. Which film was it?

Answer: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

"Rocky Horror" was considered a flop when it was first released. Critics didn't care much for it and it played to sparse audiences until studio executives tried the film at midnight showings. People began to show up in costume, carrying props and interacting with the actors on screen.

The film has been playing continuously ever since, making it the longest-running film in history. Along with Sarandon, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" featured Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien and Meat Loaf.
4. In 1980, Susan Sarandon received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Her co-star was the great Burt Lancaster, the film's director was Louis Malle. And there was something about lemons. Can you name the film?

Answer: Atlantic City

"Atlantic City" (1980) was the story of an aging small-time numbers runner and a young woman whose ambition was to work as a croupier in an Atlantic City casino. Susan's character worked in an oyster bar, and would come home smelling of fish. In a famous scene, she used lemons to get the smell off. "Atlantic City" was nominated for Best Picture, but lost out to "Chariots of Fire" (1981). Lancaster and Sarandon both received Best Acting nominations, but sentimental favorites Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn took home the gold statue for the 1980 film "On Golden Pond". All the films mentioned feature Burt Lancaster.
5. The 1988 film "Bull Durham" was the story of minor league baseball players and a woman who selected a ballplayer each season to be her lover. The film starred Kevin Costner. Susan's life would change when she became acquainted with her other co-star. Who was he?

Answer: Tim Robbins

Susan and Tim Robbins got together during "Bull Durham". Although they never married, they were one of Hollywood's longer-lasting couples, together until 2009. They have two sons, Miles and John Henry Robbins. Robbins has had a remarkable career of his own.

He starred in the unforgettable film "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the 2003 film "Mystic River". Said critic Roger Ebert of Susan's performance in "Bull Durham", "I don't know who else they could have hired to play Annie Savoy". (Quote is from rogerebert.com) She was perfect.

She took a part that might have been sleazy in other hands, and made it wonderful. This was the film that made Susan Sarandon a big star.
6. In 1991, Susan starred in a film that would become another cult favorite. There was some fine chemistry between Sarandon and her co-star Geena Davis. Speaking of chemistry, a young actor playing a small but important part in the film attracted attention as well. His name: Brad Pitt. The film was "Thelma and Louise". Susan Sarandon played the part of Thelma Yvonne Dickson.

Answer: False

She played Louise Elizabeth Sawyer in this terrific movie. Geena Davis played Thelma, and Michael Madson, Harvey Keitel and Christopher McDonald rounded out the cast. Both Sarandon and Davis were nominated for 1990's Best Actress Oscar for the film, but it was said they "cancelled each other out", and Jodie Foster won for "Silence of the Lambs".
Susan was also nominated for an Oscar for "Lorenzo's Oil" in 1992, and for her performance the 1994 film adaptation of a John Grisham book, "The Client".
7. Susan Sarandon is well-known for her political activism and her dedication to humanitarian causes. This has gotten her into hot water more than once. In 1993, she was banned from future Oscar ceremonies after making a short, unscripted speech during an Oscar presentation. What was the subject of her comments?

Answer: Haitian refugees with AIDS

Susan and Tim Robbins spoke for all of 26 seconds, but it was enough to get them banned from Oscar broadcasts for a time. The Oscar program's producer, Gil Cates, was furious with the couple. Susan has been nominated since then and was there to pick up her Oscar in 1996.
The U.S. government had interned a few hundred Haitians with AIDS at the military base in Guantanamo Bay. This was before the war in Iraq and the interning of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo.
8. Actress Eva Amurri is Susan Sarandon's daughter.

Answer: True

Eva Amurri was born in 1985 from Susan's relationship with director Franco Amurri. Eva has worked with her mother on several projects. These include "The Banger Sisters"(2002)), "Dead Man Walking"(1995) and "Middle of Nowhere"(2008).
9. Susan Sarandon is an only child, born of an Israeli mother and a British father.

Answer: False

Actually she is the oldest of nine children. Her father is of Welsh descent and her mother is Italian. She was born in 1946, which makes her over sixty. She's still considered one of the most beautiful actresses in films by men and women both.
10. Susan Sarandon finally won her first Academy Award in 1996, for "Dead Man Walking". She played Sister Helen Prejean, a nun who attempted to save a condemned rapist-murderer from execution. Who directed the film?

Answer: Tim Robbins

Tim Robbins was Oscar-nominated for his direction of the film. Sean Penn co-starred, in an amazing performance as a repugnant character. Playing the part of a nun was a departure for Sarandon, and she played it beautifully. The film was based on a book written by Sister Helen Prejean, the screenplay was written by Tim Robbins. The film didn't take sides on the issue of state-ordered executions, in spite of Robbins' well-known opposition to the death penalty.
