Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lon Chaney was born on April 1, 1883. Where was he born?

Answer: Colorado Springs, Colorado

He was born Leonidas F. Chaney on April 1, 1883, in Colorado Springs. Both of his parents were profoundly deaf and could not speak.
2. Lon Chaney was said to have developed his amazing skills in pantomime because of which of the following?

Answer: His parents could not hear or speak.

Chaney's close, non-verbal communication with his parents helped him to develop into a master of pantomime. It made him a master of conveying emotion in the non-speaking world of silent movies unequaled by any other actor. His brother John was also an actor having his own traveling stage show.
3. Which of the following statements about Cleva Creighton, Chaney's first wife is NOT true?

Answer: She was Lady Creighton, daughter of an English Earl.

Cleva Creighton, a 16 year old singer, and Chaney, who was 23, were both with the Columbia Musical Comedy Repertory Company. They were married three months after the birth of their son, Creighton, who later acted as Lon Chaney, Jr. On April 30, 1913, when Cleva was 23, she drank a bottle of bi-chloride of mercury during one of their shows.

While it did not kill her, Cleva's voice was so damaged she could no longer perform. Chaney sued for divorce shortly afterwards and was given sole custody of their son. Chaney married Hazel Hastings, a former chorus girl, in 1915.
4. True or False: though Bela Lugosi played Count Dracula in the 1924 London stage production 'Dracula', Bram Stoker had asked Chaney to do the part, but Chaney had refused.

Answer: False

Bram Stoker died in 1912, so was never involved in any movie or play of 'Dracula'.
5. How many 'Talkies' did Chaney make?

Answer: one

He spoke in only one movie, the remake of 'The Unholy Three' (MGM 1930). Chaney played five characters, including an old lady, and he gave each a distinctive voice. He died August 26, 1930 of throat cancer that had been aggravated by shards of material, used as artificial snow, that had lodged in his throat during the making of 'Thunder In Wisconsin' in 1929.
6. Which of these roles did Chaney NOT play?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

He played Fagin in 'Oliver Twist' (Jackie Coogan Productions, for Associated First National, 1922), Quasimodo in 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' (Universal, 1922), and a vampire in 'London After Midnight' for Tod Browning of' Dracula' fame, in 1927. There are no known copies of this movie in existence.

Many of Chaney's films have been lost because they were filmed on celluloid on a silver nitrate stock. The first 'Real' Sherlock Holmes was American stage actor William H. Gillette, 1853-1937. Did you know that it was Gillette who put the first Deerstalker hat on Holmes' head-not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?
7. For the 1926 movie 'Phantom of the Opera', Chaney's famous makeup, developed for the 'unmasking', was inspired by what?

Answer: The look on the faces of wounded veterans

Chaney said the inspiration was the faces of wounded WWI veterans. Chaney's skill with makeup was his forte, as seen in his breakthrough success in 1919 as a fraudulent cripple called the frog.
8. What caused a long-term riff between Chaney and his son Creighton, also known as Lon Chaney, Jr.?

Answer: He told him Cleva, Creighton's mother, was dead.

Lon Chaney divorced Cleva Creighton Chaney after she drank poison backstage during his performance. He sought and was given sole custody of their son. Chaney always told his son that Cleva was dead. When Creighton found out it was not true, it caused a riff between the two that lasted for years.
9. True or False: Lon Chaney was offered a 'cameo' in the Universal classic 'The Wolfman' but declined in fear of upstaging his son.

Answer: False

Sadly, Lon Chaney died August 26, 1930, and never saw the tremendous success of his son in 'The Wolfman', one of my all-time favorite movies. Remember those famous lines: 'Even a man who is pure of heart, and Says his prayers by night, Can become a wolf, when the Wolfbane blooms, and the Autumn moon is bright'? This is from memory, so if I'm a little off, sorry!
10. In 1957, the life of Lon Chaney was brought to the screen in a movie, starring James Cagney, that has become a classic. What is the name of this film?

Answer: 'The Man of a Thousand Faces'

The title says it all, doesn't it? Lon Chaney was the man of 1,000 faces. Thank you for taking my quiz on the talented Mr. Lon Chaney.
