His character smokes, drinks, chases women and is generally lazy, but his innocent puppy-dog expression and heart of gold means that everyone loves him anyway. Peter has said that he only got the job because he looked as if he could be Robert Hardy (Siegfried Farnon)'s younger brother. Herriot was, of course, the surname of the main character, James and his wife Helen. Alderson was Helen's maiden name. Buchanan was the surname of Calum, the assistant in series 4-6.
