Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Montana city was Lynch born (home of the Osprey baseball team)?

Answer: Missoula

In 1946, David Keith Lynch was born in Missoula, Montana to Donald and Edwina Lynch. Missoula is indeed home to the Osprey, a Minor League baseball team. And in case you were wondering, all of the possible answers are cities in Montana!
2. A young Lynch enrolled at an art school where he made his first short film and met his first wife. Which art school was it?

Answer: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

After high school, Lynch attended Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He felt uninspired there and left, finding himself much more at home at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
3. In 1966, Lynch made his first short film. What was the title of this minute-long animation?

Answer: Six Men Getting Sick

The experimental short animation was made during his time at the Philadelphia Academy. The film was released under the title "Six Figures Getting Sick (Six Times)" on the 2002 DVD "The Short Films of David Lynch". The film involves six figures undergoing bizarre distortions of their stomachs and heads.
4. The year 1977 saw the release of Lynch's first feature film, with Jack Nance playing the main character, Henry. What was the film's name?

Answer: Eraserhead

"Eraserhead" follows Henry's life in a surreal industrial landscape, dealing with his troublesome love life and parental responsibilities. Jack Nance went on to act in many more of Lynch's films.

"Begotten" is a 1990 film by E. Elias Merhige which follows a twisted retelling of the biblical story of Genesis.

"Tetsuo: The Iron Man" is a 1989 film by Shinya Tsukamoto which deals a man metamorphosing into scrap metal.

"Pi" is a 1998 film by Darren Aronofsky involving a number theorists search for mathematical patterns in nature.

All four films share grainy, black and white visuals and an element of surrealism.
5. In 2005, Lynch founded the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace. This charity seeks to fund the teaching of what unusual technique?

Answer: Transcendental Meditation

Lynch became involved in transcendental meditation in 1973. He has famously lauded the technique, and has stated that he believes in its mental and physical benefits and that it should be widely taught to people whom it could help. He wrote a book on the subject, "Catching the Big Fish", which was published in 2006 (with all proceeds going to the foundation).
6. The year 2006 marked Lynch's third marriage. The bride had previously collaborated as an editor and producer on several Lynch films. Who was this woman?

Answer: Mary Sweeney

The pair had worked together for years prior to the marriage (which was short-lived as they filed for divorce a month later). Lynch's first marriage was to Peggy Lentz (1967-1974) and his second was to Mary Fisk (1977-1987). He then then dated "Blue Velvet" star Isabella Rossellini in the late '80s. Lynch married his fourth wife, Emily Stofle, in 2009.
7. In 2009, Lynch acted as producer on a film directed by Werner Herzog. What was this atmospheric thriller called?

Answer: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?

"My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?" had its premiere at the 2009 Venice Film Festival. Herzog suggested the story to Lynch when they met to discuss working together. The film, starring Michael Shannon and Willem Dafoe, follows the events leading up to the murder of a woman by her disturbed son.

It is based on the real story of murderer Mark Yavorsky. "Invincible" (2001), "The Wild Blue Yonder" (2005) and "Rescue Dawn" (2007) were all directed by Werner Herzog, but had nothing to do with Lynch.
8. In 2010, an animated FOX show had Lynch provide the voice of a bartender. What was the show?

Answer: The Cleveland Show

"The Cleveland Show" was a spin-off from Seth MacFarlane's hit show "Family Guy". Lynch voiced Gus the bartender (who worked at the Broken Stool bar) who looked exactly like Lynch. He appeared in several episodes from various seasons of the show. He was asked to get involved by Mike Henry (the voice of Cleveland Brown), who is a big fan of Lynch's work.
9. In 2011, Lynch released an album of alternative rock and electronica songs. The album featured Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Dean Hurley. What was it called?

Answer: Crazy Clown Time

"Crazy Clown Time" was released by Play It Again Sam records in November 2011. It was the first album to be released as a solo effort by Lynch and explored alternative rock and electronic music. Unfortunately, Lynch stated he had no interest in playing the songs live.
10. Which of these was NOT a David Lynch movie?

Answer: Boxing Helena

"The Elephant Man" (1980), "Lost Highway" (1996) and "Mulholland Drive" (2001) were all films by Lynch. "Boxing Helena" was a 1993 film by David Lynch's daughter, Jennifer. It was panned by critics and Jennifer Lynch was given the Razzie award for Worst Director.
