Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these handsome actors was wearing a toupee when we watched him in the 1960's television program "Bonanza"?

Answer: Pernell Roberts

For six years Pernell Roberts played Adam, the oldest brother on the popular television western "Bonanza". His suave, brooding, portrayal of this character as well as his dark-haired good-looks left some females swooning. What many of them did not know was he was wearing a toupee.

He wore one for years, more at the request of producers and directors than for vanity. In his television show "Trapper John M.D." (1979-1986) he did not use the toupee and many naive fans were shocked when they saw his bald head and his use of a toupee became common knowledge.

It was not until later that many fans found out that Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker also wore toupees while filming "Bonanza".
2. According to a 1980 edition of "The Saturday Evening Post" magazine, which of the following performers had a supply of hair additions written into his MGM contract?

Answer: Gene Kelly

While all of these performers have, at one time or another, been accused of wearing a toupee, it was Gene Kelly who had this clause written into his movie contract. Balding at an early age, but with superb dancing skills, Kelly was able to become a major Hollywood star.

He needed very high quality hair pieces that were designed to stay on his head while he danced and spun around the stage. At that time, a high quality hairpiece could be rather expensive. While Kelly wore a toupee in every film that he made, in public and private he often went without a hairpiece, as old Hollywood photos depict.
3. Which of these actors was known to wear a hair piece when he starred in "Diamonds are Forever" in 1971?

Answer: Sean Connery

Sean Connery wore a hairpiece in every one of his "James Bond" movies. He was very open about the matter and usually appeared in public without one. At the time a man did not have the options he has today to fight hair-loss. And certainly James Bond 007 could not be bald. Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan also wore hair pieces of varying sizes while starring as James Bond.
4. The Max Factor Museum in Hollywood has been known to display the toupee of which of the following silver-screen icons?

Answer: Gary Cooper

Gary Cooper used a hairpiece known as a thickening toupee for many years. He wore it in the 1952 western "High Noon". This beloved American actor continued to wear the device in all of his movies filmed after this one. He often wore it in public and when attending functions.

At the time, most fans were unaware that he wore a hairpiece. Max Factor had helped make toupees more popular by improving the craftsmanship and creating hairpieces that, if worn correctly, were virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.
5. Known for his leading role in the movie "The Planet of the Apes" (1968), which of the following actors went to great lengths to cover up the fact that he was bald?

Answer: Charlton Heston

Charlton Heston was very bald for many years. He would wear his hairpiece at all times. When a role called for him to wear a wig, such as in "The Planet of the Apes" or when doing classical theater, he would wear the character wig over his personal hairpiece. This was at a time when toupees were very hot, messy affairs. Under the stage lights, this would have been very uncomfortable.
6. John Wayne often wore a toupee.

Answer: True

John Wayne did wear a toupee on many occasions claiming that an American hero cannot be bald. He was referring to his characters not himself. He also wore lifts in his boots to appears even taller than his 6'4" frame. His toupees were not as noticeable as those worn by other actors because he often wore a cowboy hat in his movies.

In the 1957 movie "The Wings of Eagles" he wears the toupee for most of the film but near the end of the movie hair piece is not being worn and this is believed to be a mistake that was overlooked.
7. In 1972, which of these toupee wearing actors posed in his birthday suit for "Cosmopolitan" magazine (Vol.172 No.4)?

Answer: Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds has had a long and lengthy career, as have his wigs, toupees, and hairpieces. There are some people who claim that his hair, or lack of it, is more famous than he himself is. Reynolds has an impressive list of movies and television roles, as well as his notorious pin-up photo in "Cosmopolitan". Early in his career he tried to hide the fact that he was very bald, but with age came the wisdom to realize that the world knew and the ability to laugh at himself. Various sites claim he has openly admitted to a long history of wearing hair pieces but claims he will kick anyone who tries to touch them.

The other three options have posed for "Playgirl".
8. Which one of the following comedians, while appearing on the television show "Match Game", took off his toupee and loaned it to a bald contestant?

Answer: Charles Nelson Reilly

While filming the 1970's game show "Match Game", comedian Charles Nelson Reilly took of his toupee and walked over to a bald contestant and put his toupee on the man. The audience and the other stars laughed hysterically. Reilly usually wore a hairpiece while performing but often appeared in public without it.
9. Which of these father and son pairs openly wore toupees during their years on television?

Answer: Carl and Rob Reiner

Both Carl Reiner and his son Rob were victims of very early baldness. Both started balding in their early twenties. Carl Reiner wore a hairpiece off and on for years, depending on the character that he was portraying. In private, he went without. Before he became a movie director, Rob Reiner was most known for his role as Michael Stivic('Meathead') in the 1970's comedy "All In The Family".

While filming that television program he regularly wore a hair piece to cover his rapidly balding head. It was kept under the rug at the time, but after the show ended Rob Reiner never wore a toupee again.
10. To which actor is this quote attributed? "'Pretty Woman' was the easiest job I've ever done. I just wore the right toupee".

Answer: Hector Elizondo

Hector Elizando is one of the few actors who openly appeared without a toupee both in public and private. As with many balding actors he used a toupee only when the director or producer felt it was called for. In most of his roles, he is seen without a hairpiece and has never seemed to feel the need to cover up his hair loss.
