Kevin Costner appeared in 'Field of Dreams' (1989), 'Bull Durham' (1988) and 'For Love of the Game' (1999), all of which featured baseball. 'Field of Dreams' told the story of Ray Kinsella building his own baseball diamond and 'Bull Durham' is about a minor league baseball team. 'For Love of the Game' is about an ageing pitcher who ends his career by pitching the perfect game. Among Costner's other successes are 'The Bodyguard' (1992) with Whitney Houston and 'The Untouchables' (1987). 'Waterworld', from 1995, was rather less successful mainly due to the very high costs of making the film.

Although best known for being an actor, the only Oscar he received in the twentieth century was for directing 'Reds' in 1981, which Beatty also acted in, co-wrote the script for, and produced.

After years of bachelorhood, Beatty married Annette Bening when he was aged fifty-four. The couple became parents to four children between 1992 and 2000, and Annette has also continued her acting career. Warren Beatty was on 'Vanity Fair's' cover in November 1991.

The 'James Bond' series of films is among the most successful ever made, and the majority of actors to portray the title role have come from the British Isles. The first in the series was 'Dr. No', which came out in 1962 with the Scottish born Sean Connery in the role. The English born Roger Moore took the part from 1973 until 1985, with the Australian George Lazenby appearing only in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1969). Welshman Timothy Dalton made two films between 1987 and 1989 before the Irish born Pierce Brosnan took over from 1995 until 2002.

Daniel Craig was born in north west England, and made his first 'Bond' appearance in 'Casino Royale' (2006). Among Daniel's other film successes are 'Layer Cake' (2004) and 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' (2011). He appeared on the cover of 'Vanity Fair' in May 2005.

'The Perfect Storm' came out in 2000 and told the story of the ill-fated fishing boat Andrea Gail. Clooney played the part of the boat's skipper, Billy Tyne, who decided to attempt a final fishing trip at the end of the season, with disastrous results. George played Danny Ocean in 'Ocean's Eleven' (2001) and Bob Barnes in 'Syriana' (2005), receiving an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role.

He portrayed Major Archie Gates in 'Three Kings' (1999). As well as his acting work, Clooney is known for being a humanitarian and has helped to raise funds for the victims of natural disasters such as the 2004 tsunami and the Haiti earthquake in 2010.

Michael Douglas is the eldest son of Kirk Douglas, who has a prolific acting career of his own, including the title role in 'Spartacus' (1960). Michael's career breakthrough came with the television series 'Streets of San Francisco', on which he starred with Karl Malden from 1972 until 1976.

His film successes are too numerous to list in full, but include 'Romancing the Stone' (1984), 'Fatal Attraction' (1987) and 'Basic Instinct' (1992). Michael won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Gordon Gekko in 'Wall Street' (1987). Michael and Catherine married in November 2000, and share the same birthday, although twenty five years apart.

They have had two children together - Dylan, born in 2000, and Carys, born in 2003. Michael Douglas made the cover of 'Vanity Fair' in January 1995.

Although all the actors listed are well known, and well respected, African Americans, it was Sidney Poitier who won the Oscar for 'Lilies of the Field'. Although his parents were from Bahama, Poitier was born in Miami, when his mother gave birth prematurely, and automatically received American citizenship as a result.

He established his acting career in the late 1940s and early 1950s, with 'Cry, the Beloved Country' (1951) giving him one of his early roles. Poitier was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar in 1958 for his role in 'The Defiant Ones' before his win five years later.

His other major films include 'To Sir, with Love' (1967) and 'In the Heat of the Night' (1967). Poitier's appearance on the cover of 'Vanity Fair' was in April 2000.

The film was a biography of Howard Hughes, in particular the years between 1927 and 1947. It covered his early successes as a film director, his move into aircraft design and his descent into paranoia. DiCaprio was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the role, but lost to Jamie Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles in 'Ray' (2004). DiCaprio began his acting career in 1991 with the role of Josh in 'Critters 3', and has appeared in 'The Beach' (2000) and 'Shutter Island' (2010).

Pacino was born in New York City in 1940 to an Italian American family, and given the name Alfredo James Pacino. He has played the role of Michael Corleone in 'The Godfather' trilogy, with the first film coming out in 1972 and its sequels appearing in 1974 and 1990.

His other 'hard man' roles include Tony Montana in 'Scarface' (1983) and Benjamin Ruggiero in 'Donnie Brasco' (1997). Pacino won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in 1993, and has been nominated on several other occasions. 'Vanity Fair' featured him on its cover in October 1989.

His role of Ted Kramer won Hoffman the Oscar for Best Actor, his first success following nominations for the same award for 'The Graduate' (1967), 'Midnight Cowboy' (1969) and 'Lenny' (1974). He won again in 1988 for his role in 'Rain Man'. 'Kramer vs Kramer' covered a bitter custody battle between Ted (Hoffman) and Joanna (Streep) Kramer and how it affected their son, Billy. Hoffman made his appearance on the front cover of 'Vanity Fair' in April 1996.

Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood's most prolific leading men, with roles in 'Edward Scissorhands' (1990) and 'Sleepy Hollow' (1999) among his many credits. His best known role may be that of the pirate Jack Sparrow in the series which began with 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' in 2003.
