Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1985 film 'White Nights' starred Mikhail Baryshnikov and which American dancer?

Answer: Gregory Hines

The film told the story of a Russian ballet dancer, played by Baryshnikov, who has defected to the west but finds himself back in Russia when his plane is forced to land in Siberia. Hines played a tap dancer who had defected in the opposite direction. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford who began a long relationship, leading to marriage in 1997, with Helen Mirren who also appeared in the film. The film featured songs by Lionel Richie, 'Say You, Say Me', and by Phil Collins with Marilyn Martin, who sang 'Separate Lives'. The other names are also well known for their dancing skills.
2. 'White Room' was a hit for the band named Cream, whose members were Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and which famous guitarist?

Answer: Eric Clapton

Cream are considered by many to be the first 'super group' with all three members having already having established reputations in the music business. They were together for only two years, from 1966 to 1968, although they have re-formed for performances in 1993, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2005. 'White Room' was released as a single in 1968 when it reached number 28 on the UK Singles Chart, number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number one on Australia's Go-Set National Top 40 chart.

The others are all famous guitarists.
3. The 1967 play by Howard Sackler, called 'The Great White Hope', was based on which of these sports?

Answer: Boxing

The play was a version of the life of boxer Jack Johnson, who had become the first African American holder of the world championship in the heavyweight division. The play covered themes of racism, prejudice and segregation, as the white population searches for a 'Great White Hope' to defeat the black champion.

The play was first performed on Broadway in 1968, starring James Earl Jones as Jack Jefferson. Sackler adapted his play for the big screen in 1970, with James Earl Jones reprising his role.
4. The British television series 'Whites' starred Alan Davies working in which of these professions?

Answer: Chef

The series ran for only six episodes in 2010 with Davies playing the role of Roland White, the chef at a country hotel called 'White House'. His career having stalled, he had lost interest in cooking and left all the decision making to his sous-chef, played by Darren Boyd. The series was written by Oliver Lansley and Matt King, and was based on the latter's personal experiences of working in restaurants. I hope the title of the show helped in deciding which occupation was correct, as chefs are known for wearing whites.
5. First published in 1906, the novel 'White Fang' was written by which of these authors?

Answer: Jack London

The story is based on the experiences of a part wolf, part dog pup, who is brutalised by his treatment. He eventually comes to live with a kind owner, who manages to domesticate him. The book is often seen as a 'mirror image' of London's novel 'The Call of the Wild', which tells the story of a domesticated dog which has to adapt to living in the wild. The story has been filmed, including a version in 1991 which starred Ethan Hawke.
6. Whiteface is one of the traditional types of which circus performers?

Answer: Clown

The whiteface clown is classed as the oldest type of clown and holds the highest status. The white makeup is used to cover the whole face, with features drawn on using black or red. The costume is completed by extravagant clothing. Other clown types are the auguste and character, which includes the hobo, as portrayed by Charlie Chaplin. One of the best known whiteface clowns was Felix Adler, who performed for Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey and also appeared in the 1952 film 'The Greatest Show on Earth'.
7. In 1970, T.Rex had a hit singing about a ride on which white creature?

Answer: Swan

'Ride a White Swan' reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and a lowly 76 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Led by Marc Bolan, the band was one of the first of the 'glam rock' groups of the 1970s. Their other hits included 'Hot Love' and 'Get it On' in 1971. Bolan was killed in a car accident in 1977, and the remaining members of the group disbanded. The hits had already started to dry up before then, though, with the last top ten UK hit having been in 1973, although 'I Love to Boogie' did reach number thirteen in 1976.
8. Which 1992 film, with 'White' in the title, starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh?

Answer: Single White Female

The film was based on a book by John Lutz, called 'SWF Seeks Same', with the title referring to an advert placed by Fonda's character, Allie, for a flatmate. Unfortunately, she chose Hedra (Hedy), played by Leigh, who turned out to be deeply disturbed.

Hedy took over many aspects of Allie's life and attempted to frame her for the murder of her boyfriend, Sam. Jennifer Jason Leigh won an MTV Movie Award for her role, being chosen as 'Best Villain'. The other films came from 1951 ('The Man in the White Suit') and 2004 ('White Chicks'). 'Snow White' has been filmed several times, with the animated Disney version from 1937 probably being the best known.
9. Singer Dido had a 2003 hit with which of these songs?

Answer: White Flag

The song was taken from Dido's second album, called 'Life for Rent', and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number one in several mainland European countries. Dido was called Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong at birth, but was always referred to as Dido. The name comes from the Queen of Carthage, named as Dido by Virgil in 'Aeneid'. Eminem sampled Dido's song 'Thank You' in his 2000/01 hit 'Stan'. 'White Wedding' was sung by Billy Idol, 'Nights in White Satin' by The Moody Blues and 'White Rabbit' by Jefferson Airplane.
10. The first novel by Indian author Aravind Adiga was named after which white animal?

Answer: Tiger

'The White Tiger' won the Man Booker prize in 2008. It deals with themes including the contrast between the lives of the wealthy and poor Indians, corruption in public life and tensions between Hindus and Muslims. The title comes from the nickname of the protagonist, Bilram, who is dubbed 'The White Tiger' for being the cleverest boy in his village and one of a rare breed. He is unable to continue his education, due to his family's poverty but eventually finds a way out of his situation which enables him to establish his own company, called 'The White Tiger Drivers'.
