Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. English actor Anthony Stewart Head is famous for his portrayal of the character Rupert Giles in which acclaimed US fantasy TV show?

Answer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003 and was created by Joss Whedon. Rupert Giles, generally just known as Giles, was Buffy's Watcher. Effectively he was her mentor and father figure but he was also skilled in combat and showed some magical ability.

Head appeared in the 'Doctor Who' episode 'School Reunion' alongside David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. He played Brother Lassar, the leader of a group of Krillitanes who were masquerading as the staff of a school. James Marsters, Head's co-star in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', has also appeared in the 'Doctor Who' universe, playing a murderous Time Agent from the 51st century in the spin-off show 'Torchwood'.
2. Who won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2003, for his performance as ageing rock star Billy Mack in the film 'Love Actually'?

Answer: Bill Nighy

'Love Actually' consisted of many different interconnecting plots, one of which concerned Bill Nighy's character's attempt to achieve a Christmas number one single. Billy Mack's version of 'Christmas is All Around' - a cover version of the hit song 'Love is All Around' - was included on the album of the 'Love Actually' soundtrack. 'Love is All Around' was originally released by The Troggs in 1967 but has been covered several times, notably by Wet Wet Wet who had a UK number one hit with it in 1994.

Nighy had a small role as an art gallery guide in the 'Doctor Who' episode 'Vincent and the Doctor'. In this episode Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor meets the famous Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. It was written by Richard Curtis, who also wrote and directed the film 'Love Actually'.
3. Which journalist and television presenter, best known for her role as host of both the UK and US versions of quiz show 'The Weakest Link', wrote the autobiography 'Memoirs of an Unfit Mother'?

Answer: Anne Robinson

Anne Robinson is a rare example of a presenter who has hosted both the UK and US versions of the same quiz show. The title of her autobiography reflects her struggle with alcoholism and the subsquent loss of custody of her only child in the 1970s.

Robinson provided the voice of Anne Droid, a robot version of herself hosting 'The Weakest Link', in the 2005 'Doctor Who' episode 'Bad Wolf'. The episode features the Doctor's companion as a contestant on the quiz show, which still exists in the year 200,100 but is set on a space station orbiting the Earth. The stakes are much higher though, as each eliminated contestant is sent to their death rather than just sent home with no prize money.
4. Which actor, who also has a famous acting sibling, appeared in the 2008 'Batman' film 'The Dark Knight' and was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 1985 film 'Runaway Train'?

Answer: Eric Roberts

Eric Roberts played Gotham City crime boss Sal Maroni in 'The Dark Knight'. He received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 58th Academy Awards, missing out to Don Ameche who won for his role in 'Cocoon'. Eric's younger sister is the Hollywood actress Julia Roberts.

The 1996 'Doctor Who' television film featured Eric Roberts as the evil Time Lord, the Master. It also featured two incarnations of the Doctor, with the Seventh Doctor played by Sylvester McCoy regenerating into the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann not long after the start of the movie. The film was the first step in reviving the television series which had been cancelled in 1989. However the programme did not return to TV screens until 2005 when Christopher Eccleston took over the title role and became the Ninth Doctor.
5. Australian pop star Kylie Minogue started her career as an actress on which long-running soap opera?

Answer: Neighbours

Kylie Minogue joined the cast of 'Neighbours' in 1986, playing the character Charlene Mitchell. The episode in which Charlene married Scott Robinson, played by fellow actor turned musician, Jason Donovan, was watched by about 20 million people in the UK.

Post-'Neighbours', Kylie achieved international fame as a pop singer with a string of UK number one hits such as 'I Should Be So Lucky', 'Spinning Around' and 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'. However, she made a brief return to TV acting in 2007 in 'Voyage of the Damned', a Christmas special edition of 'Doctor Who'. She played Astrid Peth, a waitress on board an alien intergalactic cruise ship called the Titanic, which had a dramatic near-miss with Buckingham Palace.
6. Which member of comedy group Monty Python appeared in both the British sitcom 'Fawlty Towers' and the 1988 film 'A Fish Called Wanda'?

Answer: John Cleese

Monty Python are a British comedy group known for their BBC TV series 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' which aired from 1969 to 1974, and a number of comedy films including the 1979 film 'Monty Python's Life of Brian'. The team consisted of six members: John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Graham Chapman.

John Cleese and Michael Palin both appeared in the 1988 film 'A Fish Called Wanda', but John Cleese was the only 'Python' to appear in 'Fawlty Towers' - he was also the co-writer of the series with his first wife Connie Booth.

Cleese had a cameo role in 'City of Death', an 1979 'Doctor Who' serial, featuring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. The plot revolved around the theft of the 'Mona Lisa' from the Louvre in Paris, and John Cleese made a short appearance in one of the art gallery scenes. The story was co-written by Douglas Adams, author of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'.
7. Which actress, best known for her role as Dr Elizabeth Corday in the US medical drama 'ER', was married to fellow actor Ralph Fiennes from 1993 to 1997?

Answer: Alex Kingston

British actress Alex Kingston's 'ER' character, Dr Elizabeth Corday, originally moved from the UK to the US to broaden her experience of trauma surgery but ended up as the Chief of Surgery at County General Hospital. Kingston was part of the main cast from 1997 to 2004 but later returned for a couple of guest appearances, including the 2009 series finale.

Alex Kingston also appeared in 'Doctor Who' in the 2008 Tenth Doctor stories 'Silence in the Library' and 'Forest of the Dead', as 51st century archaeologist, Professor River Song. She reprised the role several times in later series as it became clear that River's life was deeply entwined with the Doctor's. River married the Eleventh Doctor in the aptly titled episode 'The Wedding of River Song'. However she wasn't in the earlier episode, 'The Doctor's Wife', which suggested that his wife was actually his time travelling machine, the TARDIS!
8. Honor Blackman's character Pussy Galore, from the 1964 film 'Goldfinger', is a member of a wider group of characters generally known by what term?

Answer: Bond Girls

Bond Girl is a general term used for any character that acts as James Bond's love interest in the series of 'Bond' films, which started with 'Dr. No' in 1962. Honor Blackman played Pussy Galore opposite Sean Connery as James Bond in 'Goldfinger'. The character was the leader of Pussy Galore's Flying Circus and worked for the eponymous arch-criminal Auric Goldfinger. She betrayed her boss after being seduced by Bond.

Honor Blackman appeared in 'Terror of the Vervoids', an episode of 'Doctor Who' from 1986. The Doctor in this episode was the sixth incarnation, played by Colin Baker. Vervoids were an enslaved race of artificially created plants that ultimately decided to kill their human captors, but were prevented from doing so by the Doctor.

Grant (real name Richard Esterhuysen) was born there in 1957, when it was still a British Protectorate, prior to being granted full independence in 1968.

Grant's co-star in 'Withnail and I' was Paul McGann, who played the Doctor in the 1996 television movie of 'Doctor Who'. Richard E. Grant has also played the Doctor, but in an unofficial spoof charity version for Comic Relief entitled 'Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death'.

Grant first appeared in the official series of 'Doctor Who' in 2012 as the Great Intelligence, an old enemy of the Doctor. The Great Intelligence was first seen on screen in 1967, when Patrick Troughton had the lead role as the Second Doctor.

His daughter, Zoë Wanamaker, played Madam Hooch, the broomstick flying instructor and Quidditch referee, in the 2001 film 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' (also known as 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone').

Zoë Wanamaker also appeared in 'Doctor Who' as the last human, Lady Cassandra, who had become little more than a stretched piece of skin following hundreds of plastic surgery operations!
