Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Adrian Toomes designed a flight harness and became the first villain to face Spider-Man twice, in "Amazing Spider-Man" #2 and then in "Amazing Spider-Man" #7. What bird, which has both New World and Old World groups, did Adrian take as his namesake?

Answer: the Vulture

Over the years, there have been a number of others who have put on wings and taken to the skies, including Blackie Drago, Clifton Shallot and Jimmy Natale, but Adrian, despite his advancing years and these Vulture-come-latelies, keeps coming back for more.
2. Alexi Systsevich took his nom de guerre from an animal which has five extant species throughout Africa and Asia. First appearing in "Amazing Spider-Man" #41, what name did Alexi take?

Answer: the Rhino

The Rhino was the first new super-villain created by John Romita (and Stan Lee)after he took over the art on "Amazing Spider-Man" from co-creator Steve Ditko. His second appearance in "Amazing Spider-man" #43 was remarkable in that it was the first full issue with Mary Jane Watson, who, in that issue, instead of making Peter Parker beg for an excuse to secretly change to Spider-Man, actually insisted that she and Parker go see the Rhino in action, making it easier for him to change into Spider-Man.

Much later it was revealed that Mary Jane knew all along that Parker was Spider-Man.
3. Otto Octavius was a research scientist involved in an accident that unhinged his brain. Using the name of his favorite mollusk along with a harness of four additional appendages, he plagued Spider-Man repeatedly over the years as what archvillain?

Answer: Doctor Octopus

Doctor Octopus, whose first appearance was in "Amasing Spider-Man" #3 has come close to marrying Peter Parker's Aunt May. As of 2013, he has become even closer to Peter Parker, by switching minds with Parker and taking his place and assuming his role under the name of the "Superior Spider-Man".
4. Doctor Curtis Connors was a U.S. Army veteran who lost his arm while at war. He created a serum that allowed him to regrow his arm, but it had the additional side-effect of turning him into what reptilian foe of Spider-Man?

Answer: the Lizard

The Lizard is one of the few Spider-Man villains who is really not a bad guy when he resumes his Curt Connors form and in fact has helped Peter Parker with some frequency. Most of the stories involving the Lizard deal with trying to get the Lizard to drink a potion to restore his Curt Connors persona.
5. Richard Deacon was a petty criminal shot by police and left for dead. Doctor Harlan Stilwell saved his life, but imprinted the genetic make-up of musca domestica into Deacon, transforming him into what foe, who would often end up in Spider-Man's web?

Answer: the Human Fly

The Richard Deacon Human Fly is not to be confused with a character of the same name, who was a costumed stuntman and had his own Marvel comic title that ran for 19 issues in 1977 and 1978.
6. Taking a name shared by a group of cartilaginous fishes in the family Sphyrnidae, this foe of Spider-Man had most of his skull replaced by a steel alloy and adopted the persona of a 1930's-style gangster.

Answer: Hammerhead

Although born in Russia, Hammerhead adopted the speech patterns of a mobster after seeing an Al Capone movie poster after being badly injured and delirious.
7. One of the few Spider-Man villains named for a fellow arachnid, Mac Gargan was bonded to a green suit with a tail he could use as a bludgeon by Dr. Farley Stillwell, a process that unhinged his mind but led to him becoming what villain of Spider-Man?

Answer: the Scorpion

Mac Gargan later left the Scorpion persona behind him and became, for some time, the third human host of the Venom symbiote and a "dark" version of Spider-Man put together by Norman Osborn as part of his "Dark Avengers" team.
8. Frank Oliver grew up in Australia, and having spent time in the outback, had a preternatural ability to copy the abilities of one of the families of marsupials found there. Having a fighting style combining the ability to leap and kick with his own boxing ability, what name did Frank take when he came to the United States and opposed Spider-Man?

Answer: the Kangaroo

Frank was the first of two Spider-Man villains called the Kangaroo. Many years after the original Kangaroo died a relatively short time after his first appearance, a new Kangaroo, with armor capable of jumping and a cannon within a pouch of his armor, was mostly played for laughs in the stories he appeared.
9. Professor Miles Warren was a biology professor who taught Peter Parker but became obsessed with his girlfriend Gwen Stacy. Adopting the name from a canine with three species inhabiting Africa and Eurasia, what name did the Professor take when Gwen's death drove him insane and he pursued a dogged assault on Parker's alter ego, Spider-Man?

Answer: the Jackal

The Jackal often worked behind the scenes, manipulating others to do his work for him. His first costumed appearance, in "Amazing Spider-Man" #129, is also notable for being the first appearance of the Punisher, who he set against Spider-Man soon after Gwen Stacy's death.
10. Dmitri Smerdyakov was the first man in a costume to contest wits with Spider-Man all the way back in "Amazing Spider-Man" #1. With the power to rapidly disguise himself as anyone he chose, what lizard, whose name derives from the King of the Beasts, did Dmitri take as his own?

Answer: the Chameleon

Sharing the names of two of the sons of the patriarch of Dostoevsky's Karamazov family, albeit one illegitimate, the Chameleon has often found himself the partner of fellow Russian Kraven the Hunter.
