Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All of these groups and singers were popular in the '80s. But who did NOT first break into the charts during this decade?

Answer: Madness

Madness's blend of ska and pop first appeared in 1979, when they released their first hits, "The Prince" and "One Step Beyond". A-Ha had their first hit ("Take On Me") in 1985. The Bangles formed in 1980, but didn't hit the big time until they sang the Prince track "Manic Monday" in 1986. Duran Duran had a string of hit albums throughout the 1980s. I still can't forget Nick's lovely pink hair, and Simon's frilly shirts...
2. Which of these were NOT toys that also featured in their own cartoon series AND movie in the 1980s?

Answer: Barbie

Poor Barbie didn't get her first movie role until much later. Many thousands of little girls who owned a 'My Little Pony' had to suffer the trauma of watching their brothers cut off Lickety Split's tail, and making her the first punk pony in town.
3. Do you remember "Dangermouse"? He was the James Bond-inspired mouse, who wore an eye-patch and foiled the plans of dastardly villains. But who was his side-kick?

Answer: Penfold the Hamster

"Dangermouse" was first aired in the UK in 1981, and transferred to America in 1984. Dangermouse was voiced by veteran British actor David Jason (of "Only Fools and Horses"), and emerged from his secret hideaway under the pillarbox to defeat crime. Penfold was his bumbling sidekick, Baron Greenback was the evil toad, with LeatherHead and Stiletto being two of his evil henchmen.
4. Who can forget the wonderful "Doogie Howser, M.D."? Neil Patrick Harris played the 16-year-old genius who became a doctor before he was able to grow facial hair or vote. What gimmick was used at the end of every episode?

Answer: Doogie typed his diary on a computer

Every episode ended with Doogie typing on one of those shiny new computer things. It was the size of a small house, and had a very bright screen (it'll never catch on!).
5. Which of these is NOT a genuine '80s product, aimed at impressionable young girls?

Answer: a cool '80s girl had both of these

"Get in Shape Girl!" was a worrying exercise kit, complete with pretty pastel gymnastics ribbons and skipping ropes, and a "fun" tape to work out to. I get cold shivers just thinking about it.
"Glamour Head" was the disembodied head, which allowed girls to practice hairstyling and make-up techniques.
6. His real name was Johann Holzel, he was from Vienna, Austria, and his hits (featuring rapping in German) included "Rock Me Amadeus", "Vienna Calling" and "Der Kommisar". By what name was he better known to us in the '80s?

Answer: Falco

Sadly, Falco was killed in a car crash in the Dominican Republic in 1998.
7. When '80s boy was trying to impress '80s girl at the school disco, which of these would not make him ultra-cool?

Answer: pink and silver puff-ball

I once fell for a boy who arrived at the school disco wearing all of these. He had a nice curly perm too, just to add to the appeal. Those of us without a real puff-ball skirt tucked the hem of our ordinary skirt into the waistband. Sadly, this didn't impress anyone, and my dream boy went out with my best mate, who had a real puff-ball.
8. Which hairstyle would look out of place on a cool '80s chick?

Answer: poker-straight, centre-parted, like Sissy Spacek in "Carrie"

Sleek and straight screamed '70s. Big '80s hair just HAD to be set solid with mousse and hairspray. The feel was crunchy and stiff. Combining the perm and the bow (the wider the better) made an irresistable combination...
9. We all remember Wham! and many of us gazed at posters of George and Andrew. But do you remember the names of their backing singers? They wore the fab "GO-GO" t-shirts in the video to "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", and they had minor success in their own career without the boys.

Answer: Pepsi and Shirley

Shirley went on to marry the gorgeous Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet.
10. Which popstar was to blame for the craze for fingerless, lacy gloves?

Answer: Madonna

Oh, the lovely lacy gloves! Black, white, pastel pink, or neon yellow (or all at once) they were a real style statement. Especially when teamed with matching lacy tights.
