Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Chester Gould would frequently get Tracy into death traps and figure out how to get him out later. In the prelude to the B-B Eyes story, we find Jacques blackmailing Debby Thorndike, a frequently drunk young socialite. Jacques takes Tracy at gunpoint to a bridge project where Tracy is pushed into a caisson for the new bridge. Jacques then pushes a ten ton boulder in, but it is only dropping a little at a time. Gould couldn't figure a way out of this, so he did something that earned him his only rejection. What did he originally do to get Tracy out of this mess?

Answer: drew himself erasing the boulder

The editors told Gould that "Dick Tracy" would lose credibility if he got out of the jam that way. Chester Gould corrected it by having the floor of the hole made of wood, which was really a ventilation shaft for a new subway. The workers heard his shouts and cut a hole in the boards. Tracy got away just before the boulder finally cut its way through the clay.
Jacques was subsequently shot by Tracy as he tried to kill Debby.
2. Dick Tracy decides to cut ties with 'the crazy Thorndike family' and storms out of their house. In a fury, he doesn't notice a pool of ice and slips. What happens?

Answer: he falls and breaks his leg

Actually he slid into the path of a truck and broke his leg so bad he had to remain in the Thorndike home five weeks. This brings about a funny sequence where Debby and her partying friends are always bothering him, once very early in the morning when he has finally drifted off to sleep.
Intertwined with this is the occasional panel of a very small eyed man and his henchman spying on Debby. B-B Eyes is plotting revenge.
3. Leaving her Bird Club late (and drunk) one night with her boyfriend, Debby Thorndike wants to take a ride on something unusual. The driver turns her down, as he has business to attend to. What did she want to ride on?

Answer: a horse drawn milk wagon

Watching the whole scene, B-B Eyes and his cohort commandeer the milk wagon and use it to kidnap Debby, tossing the unconscious driver and her boyfriend out.
4. Very early one morning, an ambulance arrives at the Thorndike home for Dick Tracy. Tracy is elated to be finally leaving and can't wait to get away. However, when he is put inside the ambulance he sees the word 'Grocery' on the side and knows he is being kidnapped as well. B-B Eyes is inside and tells Tracy why he is going to kill him. What is his reason?

Answer: Jacques was his brother

Tracy is taken to an abandoned house where he is reunited with Debby Thorndike. Furious, he cracks jokes about being unable to get away from her.
But the noise of the 'ambulance' woke Bea Thorndike, Debby's aunt. She saw the word Grocery on the side and followed.
5. In a classic scene from the "Dick Tracy" comic, Dick and Debby Thorndike are taken to the basement of an abandoned house by B-B Eyes and his gang and tied tightly beside an apparatus which was supposed to cause their deaths. What were they next to?

Answer: the furnace

Tracy frequently found himself next to a furnace during the forties. B-B Eyes had sawed the floor joists of the house half way off-just to make sure it collapsed when the furnace blew. They stoked the furnace to full force and tied down the relief valve. Then they left and waited for the blast.
But Bea Thorndike had followed and her husband had made his fortune as a heating contractor so she knew what to do-break the glass water gauge. With the pressure relieved, she untied the ropes and they left the basement.
This scene was used in the 1990 movie "Dick Tracy" as well, with Junior breaking the window with a baseball and untying Tracy in the nick of time.
6. B-B Eyes returns to the abandoned house in "Dick Tracy". Realizing something went wrong, he gets in his car to leave only to have Bea Thorndike ram his car into the outside basement stairwell with hers, making him prisoner. While Tracy waits on Bea and Debby to get the police (Tracy is still in his cast and unarmed), B-B unscrews the floorboards and escapes unnoticed. Upon examining B-B's car, Tracy notices something which leads him to deduce the type of criminal activity B-B is involved in. What is it?

Answer: tire bootlegger

B-B had new tires on his car with serial numbers sanded off. Tracy and Pat Patton ask around and get on the trail of the tire thieves.
Officer O'Malley is killed while trying to buy some tires and due to Pat finding an old paper stuck in gum on O'Malley's shoe, they stake out the abandoned Elay hardware store.
7. In the "Dick Tracy" comic, B-B Eyes knows their tire warehouse is being watched. Enticing Tracy and Patton inside the tire thieves capture them. They have hijacked a truck containing something that will hold the detectives captive while they decide what to do. What was in the truck?

Answer: paraffin

B-B and his gang warm up the paraffin and make Tracy and Patton climb into tile sewer pipes, then pouring the liquid paraffin in. After it hardened, they stood them downstairs while deciding their next move.
Chester Gould was a master at coming up with new and unusual traps for his detective.
8. B-B Eyes breaks the tile sewer pipe off Dick Tracy and Pat Patton in "Dick Tracy" (to make them easier to handle) before going upstairs. Tracy realizes he can move his feet and accidentally tips himself over. The floor slants and he slowly rolls up against what?

Answer: the furnace

Yep, beside the furnace again. But this furnace is warm and it melts Tracy's paraffin strait jacket off. After digging Pat out of his paraffin, they lie in wait for the first of the gang to come downstairs. When B-B comes down the steps they attack and grab his gun.
9. B-B Eyes' gang makes a run for it in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. Their car is parked in and the driver backs onto the sidewalk trying to get away. What typical street corner adornment is their undoing?

Answer: fire plug

The gang's car gets hooked on the fire plug and a shootout underneath spraying water follows. Tracy shoots down two and takes the others into custody, their guns empty. "This is the first practice I've had in over two weeks'" he quips.
10. On the way to jail, the handcuffed B-B Eyes rolls out of the car on a bridge. In trying to climb down to the next level he loses his grip and falls into a barge loaded with 'muck' from city streets. Before Dick Tracy can contact the barge operator, he dumps his load in the bay. In typical Chester Gould "Dick Tracy" style, what settles around the tire bootlegger in his final moments?

Answer: used tire casing

One of the greatest silent panels of which Gould was the master showed B-B Eyes lying very still on the bottom of the bay with the tire around him, hands still cuffed. One of the greatest stories with a poetic ending.
Later writers of the "Dick Tracy" strip brought B-B Eyes back, hat cigar and all. (His buddies had a small oxygen tank in the tire casing.)
