Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Junior Tracy is playing catch as a distinguished gentleman calls on Tess Trueheart in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. A very polite man, he introduces himself as Edward Nuremoh, fiance of Tess. What is his former profession?

Answer: Baseball player

Chester Gould is in the midst of his reverse spelling period. (Nuremoh was a pitcher...maybe strikeout spelled in reverse would have been better for his career.)
Dick Tracy is very polite and humbled by the situation, calling on Tess and suggesting he must have waited too long.
Tess soon finds out that the Nuremoh family is a little odd. A wealthy family, they reside at Sandstone Heights on the edge of town. Edward's Aunt Margot is the bed ridden owner of the family's wealth. His mother lives in the mansion as well as his cousin Karl. Karl is socially retarded and the family spends a lot of time trying to keep him out of the way.
Edward can only inherit Aunt Margot's money if he gets married before she dies, but she must approve of his girl. Tracy followed Edward to get a look at his rival, and saw him embracing another girl. "Well. He's versatile, too."
2. Aunt Margot's favorite nephew, Peter Vaness Basken has returned from the tropics in the "Dick Tracy" comic. She has changed her will so that Edward Nuremoh gets the money, but he and his mother realize Peter is likely to get most of it now,(unless..). When Tess and Edward are married in Aunt Margot's room the next day she doesn't congratulate the new couple. Why not?

Answer: She is dead

Edward Nuremoh was seen visiting Karl in a sweat earlier, and dropping something behind his bookcase. The day of the wedding Edward acts his usual calm self.
3. Dick Tracy is ordered to investigate the murder of Aunt Margot Nuremoh. The murder weapon is found in Karl's room and he is arrested. Tracy investigates the murder scene. Due to the angle the bullet entered the body and the position of the bed, he realizes the killer was left handed. Back at the station, Tracy tells Karl, who has spent most of his time giggling ("He he they think I did it") he doesn't think Karl can even shoot a gun, placing one in his left hand. What does Karl do?

Answer: Puts it in his right hand, aims and pulls the trigger

This proves that the right handed Karl ("Hee hee! You musta forgot to put a bullet in it-huh?") didn't kill Aunt Margot.
Back at Sandstone Heights, Edward and Tess decide to pack and stay somewhere away from 'this depressing house'. While packing, Tess notices a burn in Edward's left coat pocket. When she mentions it, he begins acting strangely and tells her he'll have it fixed. She sees him burn the coat from her window.
4. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tess becomes suspicious. Her new husband, Edward Nuremoh, had a burn in his left coat pocket, then burned the coat. She finds a thermometer which was always in Aunt Margot's breast pocket. It was broken by the murderer's bullet and forgotten by the police. As she packs Edward's shoes, a round silvery ball drops out of one onto his clothes. What is the silvery ball?

Answer: Mercury

Now Tess knows. The left handed Edward shot his aunt through his coat, the bullet broke the thermometer and some of the mercury rolled off the bed into his shoe. Confronting Edward, he goes berserk and chases her out the door and through the forest, throwing rocks at her like baseballs.
5. Edward Nuremoh's girlfriend, Lola Lavir, hears about the murder of Aunt Margot in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. She goes to Sandstone Heights and overhears the butler saying Edward chased Tess out into the woods. She follows. Battered by rocks, Tess collapses as Edward aims his pistol at her. Who gets shot?

Answer: Lola-she ran into the path of the bullet

Edward Nuremoh married Tess Trueheart so he could get the Nuremoh wealth. His true love was Lola, whom Aunt Margot rejected. After accidentally shooting Lola the grief stricken Edward tells Tess the cliff is 130 feet high, then takes Lola in his arms and walks over the edge.
6. In "Dick Tracy", the grief stricken Tess Trueheart takes a drive to clear her head after the death of Edward Nuremoh. Lola Lavir's brother John crashes into her car as she leaves. He acts drunk, but Tracy sees through it. Why is he acting drunk?

Answer: He intended to kill Tess

Tracy threatens to lock him up, but Tess intervenes. He pays the damages on her car and they drive off together. Dick Tracy is shocked because he knows Tess is not herself.
Tess Trueheart's 'rival' Lola Lavir is dead, but now Tracy has another rival in John Lavir. Chester Gould's reverse spelling is at its height in the late 1930s.
7. The "Dick Tracy" comic strip now sees Tess Trueheart buying half interest in her boyfriend John Lavir's dog kennel. John trains guard dogs and is very good at it. He takes her out with him to get more dogs, first putting a small dog in the trunk. Much to Tess' dismay, what is John Lavir actually doing?

Answer: Stealing dogs

He opens the trunk and the little dog lures somebody's dog into the trunk, which Lavir closes by remote.
Tess is furious and takes some of the dogs back at night, but John is wise to her, eventually threatening her by showing her a dog with razor sharp steel fangs bolted to its real ones.
8. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tess Trueheart finally provokes a fight with her dog stealing boyfriend, John Lavir. As they scuffle, a window is broken and a large dog enters the fracas. Hearing the noise, a policeman enters to find Lavir bleeding from the neck and Tess holding a piece of broken glass. She is arrested and he dies later. Dick Tracy investigates and clears Tess. What did he find?

Answer: The dog had steel fangs

The cuts on Lavir's neck and tie were the same distance apart as the fangs on the dog. Angry at being mistreated with the steel fangs, the excited dog had killed its tormentor.
Tess Trueheart realizes her mistake and falls at Tracy's feet. Since everyone in the police station want to take her home, they decide to all take her home and she is taken by police escort.
On the return trip the police car is sideswiped by a speeder. Following the car, a huge bundle of furs and a boy are found beside the road. He says the men in the car stole his daddy's furs, and the next Tracy story begins.
9. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tracy and Pat Patton set out to find the fur thieves. Chester Gould is known for creating unforgettable characters with unforgettable names. This is an exception. After a large heist of furs, the leader of the gang, Mr. Natnus, brags: "Boys, you can call me...." What does he name himself?

Answer: Nat the Fur King

Chester Gould must have been distracted when he wrote this story. There is a fiery truck crash and some serious investigating, but its only real asset is that its short.
10. To trap the fur theives, Tracy and Patton enlist the help of a prestigious fur salesman. Mr. Natnus falls for his pitch, and will bring his furs the next day. Tracy sees some dressing booths and asks where the fur salesman got his wallpaper. What does Tracy do to catch the thieves?

Answer: Has Pat and himself wallpapered inside the booths

After Nat the Fur King completes the deal, Tracy and Patton break through the wallpaper and arrest them. Probably one of the least interesting Tracy stories with one of the least interesting criminals. But just around the corner lurks greatness.
