Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the song that is heard throughout the Haunted Mansion?

Answer: Grim Grinning Ghosts

The song starting out with a sorrowful melody goes through several changes throughout the ride before finishing with a catchy beat. In 1995, "Imagineers" interrupted the tune with a spooky version of "The Bridal March" by Richard Wagner, in the attic section of the ride.

The music, "Grim Grinning Ghosts", which is perfectly synched as the ride progresses, was composed by famous motion picture composer, Buddy Baker, with lyrics by X. Atencio.
2. "Stretching Room" (Elevator) doors close and victims, I mean "Foolish Mortals" receive a self-introduction from their host...their "Ghost Host". What is the name of the TV and movie character voice actor who lent his voice for this role?

Answer: Paul Frees

Paul Frees, born Solomon Hersh Frees (1920-1986), "The Man of a Thousand Voices" has been heard (and seen) on hundreds of television shows and movies. His voice roles have included Boris Badenov on "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show", Burgermeister Meisterburger in "The Year Without a Santa Claus", and Baron Otto Matic on "Tom Slick", just to name a few.

His voice has also been heard on other Disneyland attractions including "Monsanto's Voyage Into Innerspace" (Narrator), "The Pirates of the Caribbean" (Disembodied voice saying "Dead men tell no tales"), and several Disneyland firework shows.
3. After stepping out of Stretching Room and passing down a corridor adorned with frightening macabre masterpieces and two bust sculptures that seem to be moving, we arrive at the Loading Area, where fellow victims are climbing into large egg-shaped conveyances moving in line. What is the generic name for these "Doombuggies"? Hmmmmm?

Answer: Omnimovers

Known outside of Disney Parks as an "Endless Transit System", The WED (Walter Elias Disney) Enterprises' Omnimover was originally designed for the now defunct Disneyland ride, "Monsanto's Adventure Thru Inner Space".

The Omnimover differs from earlier versions of the ETS, in that the Omnimover has the ability to rotate in order to direct the rider's view in the desired direction, while conceal their view from "behind the scenes" areas that might spoil the illusion. The Omnimover also has stereo audio features that allow each set of riders to hear the audio narration exactly as the desired point of the ride.
4. As the Foolish Mortals are shown the Conservatory, a raspy male voice can be heard saying, "Let me out of here!". What does he want to be let out of?

Answer: A casket

Foolish Mortals can see a pair of boney hands pushing up the casket lid.
5. At the end of the creepy corridor, the Ghost Host introduces Madame Leota. Who in Hades is Madame Leota?

Answer: A disembodied head of a medium inside a crystal ball

The ghostly effect was created by projecting a film loop of Leota Tooms onto a blank (white) head form. Her voice is perfectly synched with an excellent performance by voice actress, Eleanor Audley. She will be seen again a miniature full body apparition later in this terrifying tour.
6. After the séance, Foolish Mortals are taken to the balcony overlooking the mansion's Ballroom. Several opaque dead dancers appear as if they were floating inches from the dance floor. What is this effect called?

Answer: Pepper's Ghosts

The Pepper's Ghost effect was demonstrated by scientist, John Henry Pepper in 1862, but historical records indicate that this illusionary effect was performed as far back as the 16th Century.

The effect is created by using a "Blue Room" adjacent to the Ballroom. The dancers are acrylic models turning on turntable with a large mirror reflect their images by a mirror placed at a 45° degree angle from the Blue Room and the Ballroom. When the blue light illuminates the dancers, their images are reflected onto a large plate glass covering the Ballroom.
7. Foolish Mortals are then taken to the attic, where Constance Hatchaway, an axe-wielding, ghostly bride, is surrounded by various dusty junk and five portraits of her five beheaded husbands. When The Haunted Mansion first opened in 1969, the was another apperition character that was almost immediately removed from the ride due to the fact the at a certain angle, the ghostly effect didn't work. Who was this character?

Answer: The Hatbox Ghost

The Hatbox Ghost appeared to be another victim of the beheaded Bride. Every few minutes, the poor victim's head would disappear then reappear inside the Hatbox that he is holding.

Good news for fans of The Haunted Mansion: A re-engineered and improved Hatbox Ghost was installed in the attic during the summer of 2015.
8. As Foolish Mortals pass through the ghoul and ghost-filled cemetery, they are treated with a jazzed up version of The Haunted Mansion theme accompanied by the harmonized voices of five bust statues. The baritone singer's bust is broken, but he doesn't seem to mind. Who is the bassman who lent his image and voice to this terrifying troubador?

Answer: Thurl Ravenscroft

While "Uncle Theadore" bears an incredible likeness to Mr. Disney, the voice and face is all Thurl Ravenscroft (1914-2005). His smooth voice has also been heard in "You're a Cruel One, Mister Grinch" in the original animated movie version of "How The Grinch Stole Chistmas", and Kellogg's Frosted Flakes mascot "Tony the Tiger".
9. After "flying out" of the attic window and descending down to the cemetery, Foolish Mortals encounter two living beings besides the ravens seen at various points of the ride. Who is this petrified pair?

Answer: The Caretaker and his dog

This pair of animatronic amigos sort of look like an emaciated Shaggy and Scooby Doo. They, along with the aforementioned ravens, are the only "living" characters on the ride.
10. After disembarking from their "Doombuggies", Haunted Mansion victims walk down a short corridor leading to the exit, and a greeted by "Little Leota", a diminutive ghostly image in a long white gown, who beckons them with "Hurry back, hurry back. Be sure to bring your (___Blank___) if you decide to join us". Fill in the blank.

Answer: Death Certificate

The Little Leota effect was created by projecting a film loop of Disney Imagineering employee, the ironically named, Leota Toombs. The projection technique is the same as the "Singing Busts" and "Madame Leota" features of the ride.
