Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Disney character has triskaidekaphobia, better known as a fear of the number 13?

Answer: Bernard - "The Rescuers"

Bernard from "The Rescuers" has triskaidekaphobia, which is a fear of the number 13. It is increasingly evident that he has this fear as in the movie, he is concerned when he finds that there are 13 steps on the ladder he climbs, and when the flight he and Bianca are scheduled to board is Flight 13. Also, as he is boarding Flight 13, he notices that there are 13 steps on the ramp. At this, Bianca suggests that he jump the last one, so he does.

Basil of Baker Street, in "The Great Mouse Detective", has many quirks, but triskaidekaphobia is not one of them.

Ariel from "The Little Mermaid" doesn't seem to have any fears at all. She does what she wants, when she wants, despite her father's orders.

Gurgi from "The Black Cauldron" is, for much of the movie, a coward, but he never specifically expresses fear of the number 13.
2. Which Disney villain has suriphobia, also known as a fear of mice?

Answer: Madame Medusa - "The Rescuers"

Madame Medusa of "The Rescuers" has suriphobia, also known as a fear of mice. When she first discovers Bernard, she shrieks, gets on top of a chair and yells "Snoops! Snoops, a mouse! Oh, kill it! Kill it!" She becomes even more terrified when she discovers Bianca as well!

Professor Ratigan of "The Great Mouse Detective" does not have suripobia. If anything, the exact opposite; he demands that he be acknowledged as a mouse, instead of a rat, which is what he really is. He hates being called a rat, and if he wants to be considered a mouse, he can't possibly have a fear of them.

Shan-Yu from "Mulan" doesn't seem to have any fears whatsoever.

Scar from "The Lion King" certainly isn't afraid of mice, as he is seen mercilessly teasing one in his first scene in the movie.
3. In "Hercules", what does Megara have a terrible fear of?

Answer: Heights

In "Hercules", Megara tricks Hercules into going into the gorge when she tells him that there are two little boys trapped under a rock-slide. Hercules puts Meg on top of Pegasus, so that they can both fly to the gorge. As he does this, Meg says "No, you don't under-- I have this...terrible fear of heights!"

One might think she has a fear of flying, as she doesn't want to ride Pegasus, but she openly says that it is heights that she fears.

One might think she simply doesn't like Pegasus, but it's Pegasus who doesn't like Meg!

Meg is obviously not afraid of Hades, as she made a deal with him, follows his orders and stands up to him.
4. Which Disney character is afraid of a crocodile?

Answer: Captain Hook - "Peter Pan"

Captain Hook is afraid of the crocodile to whom Peter Pan fed Hook's left hand.

Maleficent probably fears nothing. Also, there were no crocodiles in "Sleeping Beauty".

Kovu, from "The Lion King 2" is shown running from crocodiles, but it isn't any specific crocodile that he fears.

Koda from "Brother Bear" never expresses any fear of crocodiles, probably because there aren't any in North America, where the movie takes place.
5. Which Disney villain is afraid of birds?

Answer: Hopper - "A Bug's Life"

Hopper from "A Bug's Life" is afraid of birds. Princess Atta mentions this to Flik; a piece of information that he helps all the ants work to their advantage. They build a fake bird out of twigs and leaves, and use it to scare Hopper. And it works, until it catches on fire and their whole plan goes up in flames.

Jafar, Maleficent and Shan-Yu all can't possibly fear birds, because they each have a bird sidekick; Jafar has Iago the parrot, Maleficent has Diablo the raven, and Shan-Yu has a falcon.
6. In "The Sword in The Stone", Kay shoots an arrow way too high, and it lands somewhere in the forest. When Arthur volunteers to go get it, Kay tells him that the woods are swarming with wolves. What does Arthur say to this?

Answer: "I'm not afraid."

In "The Sword in The Stone", after being warned about wolves, Arthur simply says "I'm not afraid," and goes in after the arrow. Kay says "Go ahead; it's your skin, not mine!"

Arthur did not say "I'm not scared of any wolves!" Nor did he say "There's nothing to be afraid of." Nor did he say "I'm not afraid of wolves."
7. In "Lilo and Stitch", Stitch at first expresses a fear of water. Why does he fear water?

Answer: His molecular density is too great to swim.

In "Lilo and Stitch", when Stitch first escapes to Earth, the Grand Council woman says (after learning that Earth is made up of mostly water) "He won't survive in water; his molecular density is too great."

When Lilo first adopts Stitch, she is given a bottle of water to spray at Stitch when he is bad. He doesn't like that at all.

Later on in the movie, Jumba is bewildered by the fact that Stitch seems to WANT to go surfing. Jumba says to himself "He cannot swim! Why will he risk drowning?" And it is seen moments later that Stitch can't swim. He almost drowns, but fortunately David rescues him.

The fact that salt water would sting your eyes doesn't seem to bother anyone in "Lilo and Stitch", as there are scenes where just about every character is seen swimming underwater with their eyes open.

Stitch is not allergic to water.
8. Which Disney character from a Disney sequel has hydrophobia, also known as a fear of water?

Answer: Nita - "Brother Bear 2"

In "Brother Bear 2", Kenai meets up with his childhood friend, Nita, who has a fear of water because of an incident that happened when she was a kid, during which she almost drowned. This fear hinders her journey to go to a mountain and burn an amulet that Kenai gave her.

Kiara, from "The Lion King 2" does not display a fear of water.

Melody from "The Little Mermaid 2" does not have a fear of water at all; quite the opposite, as she loves the sea wishes to be a mermaid.

Angel from "Lady and the Tramp 2" doesn't seem to have a problem with water. Though, after falling into the river, she says "There's got to be a better way to take a bath, huh?" But that doesn't mean she has a fear of water.
9. Which Disney character has pyrophobia, or rather a fear of fire?

Answer: Shere Khan - "The Jungle Book"

Shere Khan from "The Jungle Book" has pyrophobia; fear of fire. One of the reasons he hates Man. There is a scene in which Bagheera tells Baloo "He hates Man with a vengeance, you know that. Because he fears Man's gun and Man's fire!" Also, there is a line towards the end of the movie, where one of the vultures says to Mowgli "Fire! That's the only thing ol' Stripes is afraid of!"

Jafar was not afraid of fire, as he used it as a weapon in the fight scene with Aladdin.

Frollo had a fear of going to Hell and burning in fire, but he couldn't have been literally afraid of fire per se, as he didn't hesitate to burn Paris to a crisp in his efforts to find Esmeralda.

King Louie from "The Jungle Book" couldn't have been afraid of fire either; he asked Mowgli to teach him how to make it.
10. In "101 Dalmatians", Pongo and Perdita turn to the Twilight Bark, or the Barking Chain, to send word of their missing puppies. But when they go to the park and start barking, no one answers at first. What does Perdita fear?

Answer: That it's too cold for anyone to be out.

Perdita said "There's no one out tonight. I'm afraid it's too cold." It wasn't windy that night, and it couldn't have been too late, or Roger and Anita probably wouldn't have even taken their dogs for a walk that night. Also, it wouldn't have mattered how dark it was, as the Twilight Bark depends on sound, not sight.
