Living in Mickey's Shadow, Other Characters Quiz

Mickey had several supporting characters who any Disney fan can instantly recognize. Although they don't each get a quiz of their own, (I admit, I can't think of that many questions) I will try to incorporate as many into this quiz as I can think of.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although he had no real lines, Mickey's ever faithful companion Pluto did have a voice. Who provided the voice for Pluto's yelps and whines?

Answer: Pinto Colvig, the voice of Goofy

Goofy, who was originally created as a dog, has the same voice as Pluto, Mickey's pet dog. They are drawn very similarly, but that has nothing to do with why Colvig did the voice for both of them. He was just a good voice actor.
2. Pluto first appeared in Disney cartoons in 1930, and has starred in many others. What breed of dog is Pluto?

Answer: Bloodhound

In Pluto's first on screen appearance, "Mickey's Chain Gang", Pluto, although not named, was one of the bloodhounds who was used to track Mickey the prisoner. After this appearance, he changed sides and rather than hunting him, became Mickey's faithful friend and companion.
3. In one of Pluto's war cartoons, he had a run-in with another character(s). This was the first time the character(s) appeared in a Disney film. Although un-named during this first appearance, who did Pluto meet for the first time?

Answer: Chip and Dale

In "Private Pluto", Pluto was ordered to guard a pillbox (gun turret). Unfortunately for him, it was already occupied by two troublemaking chipmunks who were storing nuts inside and using the gun to crack them. They eventually were named and given two conflicting personalities. Chip had a regular black nose and was more logical while Dale was given an oversized red nose and an intelligence level comparable to that of Goofy.

Despite their bickering, Chip and Dale remain friends, outwitting whoever they are pitted against.
4. The song that epitomizes Disney is "When You Wish Upon a Star". Do you remember who first sang this magical tune?

Answer: Jiminy Cricket

Pinocchio's official conscience, Jiminy Cricket, first sang this familiar song at the beginning of the movie, "Pinocchio". Although not in the original script, he turned out to be a major role in helping Pinocchio become a real boy. "Jiminy Crickets" was originally yelled out by the seven dwarfs when they found the lights on in their cottage before evolving into the famous insect's name.

The classic song which he made famous is a perfect description of Disney's magical feel and is repeated to this very day.
5. What great cartoon character would be complete without a girlfriend. One of my personal favorites was Daisy Duck. That wasn't always her name. What was it originally?

Answer: Donna Duck

Interesting how most of Walt's characters have changed names since their first appearance. In her first cartoon, Daisy was "Donna" in "Don Donald". I guess they wanted a name similar to her boyfriend's.
6. Who are Chip and Dale usually pitted against?

Answer: Donald Duck

After battling with Pluto in their debut, Chip and Dale were turned into another character for Donald Duck to fight with. They are usually more concerned with collecting food than with starting trouble, but that is where they always end up. Always shown together, they are two of the funniest characters to watch.
7. Mickey can often be seen hanging out with his girlfriend, Minnie. Minnie became so popular, Disney theme parks dedicated a year as "Minnie's Year". What year was this?

Answer: 1986

You would think that after over 75 years Mickey and Minnie would be more than just boyfriend and girlfriend. Minnie has been by Mickey's side the whole time, making her debut along with Mickey in "Steamboat Willie" and is as dedicated to him as ever.
8. Donald Duck keeps his hands full with his three nephews; Huey, Dewey, and Louie. These troublemaking triplets would make anybody go nuts, let alone their short tempered uncle. In the ORIGINAL cartoons, how could Donald (or anybody) tell them apart?

Answer: There was no way to tell them apart.

Originally, the colors on the costumes were interchangeable. It wasn't until later years when they were a part of the "Ducktales" TV series that they became color coordinated. Huey wore red, Dewey wore blue, Louie wore green and nobody wore pants! Like uncle like nephew.
9. Chip and Dale's lines consist of chattering back and forth, but do they actually say anything in English?

Answer: Yes

I always suspected they were speaking real words and my suspicions were confirmed almost by accident. I was playing with the captioning on one of my DVDs and I was surprised to see that when Chip and Dale were chattering back and forth, they actually closed captioned what they were saying! I still don't understand what "It's a big baboon of an ape" means, but that's what they are saying. Chip and Dale got their own TV series later and thankfully they talked much clearer.
10. If you have ever seen any of the classic Disney shows ("Wonderful World of Color" for example) you may remember seeing Tinkerbell flying around the screen. She has become as much a symbol of Disney as Mickey himself. What exactly is Tinkerbell?

Answer: A pixie

Who doesn't remember first seeing "Peter Pan" as a kid and dreaming of being sprinkled with pixie dust. Originally partnered up with the young boy who refused to grow up, she has since moved away from Neverland to pursue larger and greater things. She still flies past the castle at Disneyland every night just like she did when introducing all of the classic Disney shows.
