1. Who was the first Rose of Tralee?

Answer: Alice O'Sullivan

Alice O'Sullivan was one of five Roses to participate in the contest. Alice was nineteen years old and a native of Dublin, but her father was originally from Tralee.
2. In 2008, who were allowed to enter the contest for the first time?

Answer: Unmarried mothers

Up to, and including, 2007 only single girls were allowed to participate in the contest. In 2008 that was changed to allow unmarried mothers to take part.
3. In which year was the Rose of Tralee first televised?

Answer: 1967

Telefis Eireann first broadcasted the Rose Selection from a stage outside the Ashe Memorial Hall. The compere was Joe Lynch, a well known Irish actor.
4. Where was the first Rose of Tralee from?

Answer: Dublin

Alice O'Sullivan, the Dublin Rose, was selected as the first Rose of Tralee back in 1959. Initially another girl was selected to represent Dublin in the contest, but she was disqualified on some technicality, and Alice was sent as the Dublin Rose instead.
5. In 2003 the Rose of Tralee festival saw its first black Rose. Where was this beauty from?

Answer: Philadelphia

Sinead deRoiste, 25, daughter of an Irishman and African-American woman represented Philadelphia as the first black Rose to enter the contest. Sinead is a niece of Adi Roche, founder of the Chernobyl Children's Project in Ireland.
6. Who was the first presenter of the Rose of Tralee?

Answer: Kevin Hilton

Kevin Hilton, a commercial traveller from Limerick, was the first compere and as he interviewed the Roses, the event was recorded on CCTV and broadcast to another festival dance in the nearby CYMS Hall.
7. How many Roses participated in the very first Rose of Tralee?

Answer: Five

The five Roses were from Tralee, London, Dublin, Birmingham and New York. The contest was staged on a budget of just IR£750.
8. 2009 was the 50th anniversary of the Rose of Tralee. How many contestants participated?

Answer: Fifty

For the 50th anniversary 50 Roses participated. Normally around thirty to thirty two Roses participate.
9. At what venue was the first Rose of Tralee selected?

Answer: Ashe Memorial Hall

After Alice was selected as the Rose of Tralee she went outside the Hall to greet the massive crowd on Denny Street. It is estimated that up to 80,000 people crowded the town of Tralee that night.
In an interview Alice recalls, "I remember being up there with Shelia Anne Horgan from New York, Kathleen Sheehy from Tralee and a few others from the UK. The interviews were filmed, which was amazing to all of us in those days as many of us didn't even have a television!"
10. Fifty little girls from all over County Kerry played a part in the 2009 Rose of Tralee. Do you know what these little girls were called?

Answer: Rose Buds

Each Rose Bud had her own sash with her name and the location of where the Rose she is paired with came from. Over 1500 children applied to become a Rose Bud.
