Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Verna Felton is a little-heard name, but she had a larger than life role in a 1950 Walt Disney animated classic. With a "bibbidi-bobbidi-boo", can you name the character she made famous?

Answer: Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella"

Verna Felton was a wonderful voice actor who made famous many Walt Disney characters. These included Dumbo's mother in "Dumbo", the Queen of Hearts in "Alice in Wonderland", and Flora in "Sleeping Beauty". Her legacy truly lives on through her magical performance as the Fairy Godmother who sang the wonderful "Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo" as she waved her magic wand, making sure that Cinderella could go to her ball.
2. Santa gave a bellowing laugh when he asked which creature from the "Pokemon Gold and Silver" role-playing video games resembles a phoenix?

Answer: Ho-oh

Ho-oh resembles the legendary phoenix, but with gold and red wing feathers and a white under-belly. It is said to live at the foot of a rainbow, which is why its feathers glow if it is struck by light, and why its alternative name is the Rainbow Pokemon.

It is a fast flyer, can attack with fire, and can revive any dead Pokemon. As well as appearing in the Nintendo "Pokemon Gold and Silver" games, Ho-oh also appeared in the augmented reality game, "Pokemon Go", which was released in 2016 by Niantic.
3. What was the name of the small mechanical owl sent by the goddess Athena to help Perseus with his "Clash of the Titans" (1981)?

Answer: Bubo

Before CGI (computer-generated imagery) came into prominence, the 1981 film "Clash of the Titans" was a visual spectacle using only the special effects available at that time. We saw stop-motion animation at its best, with Perseus defeating the Kraken, giant scorpions, and not forgetting the frightening Medusa with her slithering snake-like motion and glaring eyes that could turn a man to stone. I was still hiding behind the sofa when Perseus used his reflective shield to decapitate her! It was fun, it was camp, it was scary, but most of all it was a classic.

To help him fight mythical creatures, Perseus (Harry Hamlin) was aided by the flying horse, Pegasus, and a golden mechanical owl called Bubo, a replica of her own wise owl that Athena sent to earth to help him out. The film also starred Judi Bowker (Andromeda), Maggie Smith (Thetis), Sian Phillips (Cassiopeia), Claire Bloom (Hera), Ursula Andress (Aphrodite) and Laurence Olivier (Zeus).

Errol, Hedwig and Pigwidgeon were all owls which featured in the "Harry Potter" series of books.
4. Efteling World of Wonders amusement park in the Netherlands features which enclosed rollercoaster that rides in the dark?

Answer: Bird Rok

Bird Rok, or Vogel Rok, is an enclosed rollercoaster that was first opened in 1998. The name of the ride was taken from the mythical roc bird which appeared in the folk-tale collection of stories, "One Thousand and One Nights". The outside entrance has a giant roc, with long wings and extended talons. On entering under its giant body, visitors board a train and are taken on a 65 km/h speed flight through the dark, winding up, down and around, with flashing lights, on-board audio system and special effects.

Efteling World of Wonders is the largest amusement park in Holland. It is situated in the village of Kaatsheuvel which is just to the north of the city of Tilburg. Opened in 1952, it features attractions with a fairytale theme, including the Haunted Castle, The Emperor's New Clothes, and the Fairy Tale Forest.
5. What were the angels doing when "Doctor Who" repeatedly said, "Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good luck." ?

Answer: Weeping

The Weeping Angels first appeared in the 2007 "Doctor Who" episode called "Blink". These stone statues were in fact a race of predatory creatures described as being Lonely Assassins. They would not kill a person, but with one touch they could send you back to a different time zone, feeding off the energy released during the time transfer. The Doctor described the phenomenon as "wibbly wobbly timey wimey". If you look at them, they appear like innocent stone statues, but when you blink, close your eyes or turn away, they quickly creep up stealthily and touch you.

Second to The Daleks, the Weeping Angels have been voted as the scariest of all the "Doctor Who" monsters and aliens.

Angels have often been depicted in religion and art as winged creatures, serving as messengers from God. Two flying angels are specifically mentioned in the bible (KGV version); Seraphim as a six-winged angel in Isaiah 6:1-4, and Cherubim with four wings in Ezekiel 1:5.
6. The 2009 film "Avatar" saw actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana flying on mythical creatures called what?

Answer: Ikran - mountain banshee

Ikran were fictional mythical creatures which lived in the magical land of Pandora, home to a tribe of ten foot tall humanoid called Na'vi. Ikran were mountain banshee, half bird and half reptile that slightly resembled pterodactyls, soaring across the sky with their long membranous wings. They are completely different to their namesake, the wailing female banshee in Irish mythology. Ikran, or mountain banshee, lived in rookeries high atop Hallelujah Mountains with its verdant topped cliff faces. The strongest would be captured and domesticated, serving one Na'vi warrior during their lifetime.

"Avatar" was the brain-child of director James Cameron, a well known director also responsible for earlier blockbusters including "The Terminator", "Aliens" and "Titanic". Zoe Saldana played Neytiri, daughter of the Na'vi clan leader, and Sam Worthington as her love interest, a human ex-marine who helped to save her kingdom.

The false answers were the words bird (drib), wyvern (nrevyw) and dragon (nagard) spelt back to front.
7. Which classical composer wrote the music for "Ride of the Valkyries"?

Answer: Richard Wagner

"Die Walküre (The Valkyrie)" was composed by Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883), a three act extravaganza which was based on Norse mythology. "Ride of the Valkyries" was part of the second act. The story featured Siegmund, a hero who fell in love with his sister, a mortal already married to another man. The valkyrie Brunnhilde was instructed by her father to kill Siegmund and take his slain body to Valhalla. She disobeyed, and as penance, was sent into an eternal slumber on a mountain top encircled by protective flames.

Valkyries are female warriors who gather the souls of fallen heroes and take them to Valhalla, a great hall ruled over by the Norse god, Odin. The dead souls are grouped together to form an army to defeat enemies at battle. Valkyries are are often portrayed as having wings, but they have also been known to take on the form of a raven, swooping low over battlefields ready to take away the dead. They have also been known to use horses or wolves with wings to fly away the dead bodies.

Wagner was also known for composing other classics such as "Lohengrin", Tristan and Isolde" and "The Flying Dutchman".
8. Which 1975 book written by John Keel featured the alleged sightings of a flying cryptid in West Virginia, USA?

Answer: The Mothman Prophecies

A cryptid is an animal which has been sighted but without any evidence to corroborate the creature actually exists. Examples include the yeti, Loch Ness monster, jackalope, bigfoot, bunyip and mermaid. Cryptozoology is the study of cryptids and a cryptozoologist is a person who studies and searches for these mythical beings.

The mothman is a flying cryptid, first sighted during 1966 in the Point Pleasant area. It was described as being a flying humanoid with large bat-like wings and with red glaring eyes similar to a bicycle reflector. American UFOlogist John Keel wrote about the several accounts people had made and also his own theories. The 2002 film "The Mothman Prophecies" was based on the book and starred Richard Gere as the author.
9. What does a 1963 song by Peter, Paul and Mary, the nemesis to Norse warrior Beowulf, and a retired American professional wrestler called Ricky Steamboat have in common?

Answer: Dragon

All the answers relate to dragon.

"Puff the Magic Dragon" was a 1963 song made famous by the trio, Peter, Paul and Mary. It featured lyrics which included, "Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea. And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnah Lee. Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff. And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff."

The nemesis to Beowulf was the dragon. British actor Ray Winstone portrayed the Nordic legend in the 2007 film "Beowulf", which also starred Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovich. Our hero was slain at the end of the film by the dragon; his son Grendel who had been sent in disguise as the flying beast by his mother.

Ricky Steamboat is a former American professional wrestler who was given the nickname "The Dragon". He was in fact born Richard Henry Blood Sr. in New York, in 1953. His career led him to become NWA World Heavyweight Champion in 1989 and a four-time United States Heavyweight Champion in 1978, 1979, 1984 and 1994.
10. Which of these was a fairy servant to Titania in William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"?

Answer: Mustardseed

Caliban, Ariel and Sycorax all featured in "The Tempest". Mustardseed, Cobweb, Moth and Peasebottom were all fairies who served the fairy queen, Titania, in the fantastical comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Bottom was another wonderful character who always brought light relief to the play.

In Act 4 Scene 1, Mustardseed asked Bottom "What's your will?", to which Bottom replied "Nothing, good mounsieur, but to help Cavalery Cobweb to scratch. I must to the barber's, monsieur; for methinks I am marvellous hairy about the face; and I am such a tender ass, if my hair do but tickle me, I must scratch."
