Answer: Orville Brown

The National Wrestling Alliance was formed in October 1948. It was a lossely-based alliance of wrestling promoters, mainly from Southern and Eastern US. Orville Brown was given recognition by the promoters at their October meeting.Brown, unfortunately, was injured in an automobile accident on 1st Nov, 1949, and forced to retire. Recognition passed to Lou Thesz.
2. In which city was the NWA based until 1982?

Answer: St. Louis

President of the NWA from inception until his retirement in 1982 was Sam Muchnick, a promoter who ran the Central States territory.
St. Louis became famous for its wrestling cards while Sam was in charge.
3. How many times did Lou Thesz hold the NWA World Heavyweight Title between 1949 and his last match in 1990?

Answer: 3

Legend reports Lou as a 6-time NWA champ, but in fact, he 'only' held the National Wrestling Alliance title 3 times from its creation. The other 'world titles' he held were the American Wrestling Association title in 1937-38, and the National Wrestling Association title, which he held 3 times between 1939 and 1949.
4. The first title reign of Harley Race came between the tenures of which two great champions?

Answer: Dory Funk Jr. & Jack Brisco

Harley Race defeated Dory Funk Jr. on 24th May, 1973, and lost it to Jack Brisco on 20th July, 1973. During that time, he defended the title against WWWF legend, Bruno Sammartino, in a classic 60 minute draw in, where else but St. Louis!
5. The 70's saw the advent of the 'quick swap' title change when the World Champion toured Japan. The NWA had an association with All-Japan Wrestling Association, which was owned by Giant Baba. How many times did Baba win the NWA World Heavyweight Title?

Answer: 3

Shohei (Giant) Baba first won the title in 1974, when he swapped it with Jack Brisco. He had short runs with it again in 1979 and 1980, when each time, he swapped it with Harley Race.
6. From 1948 until 1993, when WCW withdrew from NWA and effectively reduced the NWA titles to 'regional' status, only one set of brothers held the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Who were they?

Answer: Dory and Terry Funk

Dory Jr. won the title in 1969 from Gene Kiniski, and held it through to 1973, when he dropped it to Harley Race. Terry defeated Jack Brisco in 1975, and held it until 1977 when he also dropped it to Harley Race.Although Jack Brisco held the title on two occasions, Gerry managed to win the NWA Junior-Heavyweight Title, but not the Heavyweight title.
7. Ric Flair was stripped of the NWA World Heavyweight Title on 8 September 1991. Why?

Answer: He signed with WWF

Flair signed with WWF, and proceeded to win the WWF World Title twice, before he returned to WCW/NWA.
8. WWWF was a member of the NWA.

Answer: True

Vince McMahon, Sr. was a member of the NWA from well before he formed WWWF in 1963. Consequently, WWWF/WWF remained a member of NWA until Vince Sr. sold the promotion to Vince Jr. in 1983.The upshot of this is that, until 1983, WW(W)F regarded itself as a 'regional' title, with the NWA World Title being the most important title.
9. 1972 saw a man, who later gained fame as a WWF commentator, win the NWA World Heavyweight Title, only to have it taken away when the champion's father entered the ring after the match and attacked the referee, who changed the decision to a 'disqualification'. Who was the unlucky wrestler?

Answer: Lord Alfred Hays

The champion was Dory Funk Jr., and the father was, of course, Dory Sr. As we all know, the title can't change hands on a disqualification!
10. After a hiatus, members of the NWA regrouped, and held a tournament to decide a new World Heavyweight Champion on 27 August 1994. Who won the tournament?

Answer: Shane Douglas

Shane Douglas won the tournament, but immediately refused the belt. He announced that he was representing ECW, which had been an NWA member, but was withdrawing as of that night. Thus began ECW as a separate, and formidable, organisation.
