In April 1978, Ric Flair had recaptured the United States Heavyweight Championship from "Mr. Wrestling I" Tim Woods. Blackjack Mulligan congratulated Flair on the victory during a television interview. Flair insulted Mulligan during the interview causing a fight between the two wrestlers.

Mulligan wrestled a match during the television taping that night. During the match, Flair came to ringside and destroyed a prized cowboy hat belonging to Mulligan much to the dismay of Mulligan. Later that night, Mulligan interrupted Flair's match by coming to the ringside area and destroying one of Flair's expensive ring robes.
