Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Humphrey Bear live?

Answer: Brownstone National Park

Along with all the other bears, Humphrey resided in Brownstone National Park in the good old USA.
2. What is the name of the park ranger who looks after Humphrey and the other bears?

Answer: J. Audobon Woodlore

Ranger Woodlore was Humphrey's usual co-star. They made 5 films together. He was a chubby little man with mild manners that thought of the bears as his children. He loved them, scolded them and expected them to do chores around the park.
3. Who created Humphrey Bear?

Answer: Jack Hannah

Jack Hannah was a writer, animator and director of many Disney's animated shorts. He was assistant to the legendary Carl Barks, father of Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck. Barks is considered by some to be the "cartoonist of the 20th century." Keno Don Rose followed in Barks footsteps and sometimes added bizarre drawings.

He has a large following of devoted fans. Tex Avery created Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and the personality of Bugs Bunny for Warner Brothers.
4. "Hold That Pose" was Humphrey's first appearance on the screen. What year was it released?

Answer: 1950

"Hold That Pose" starred Goofy with Humphrey, as yet unnamed, as the costar. It was a "how-to" cartoon with Goofy as an amateur photographer who is pursuing his new hobby by photographing nature. Specifically, he's taking pictures of Humphrey, the grizzly bear. Humphrey is an unwilling subject.

He appears ferocious in his debut but later he mellows into a lovable, bumbling, childlike and mischievous character.
5. Humphrey's second picture was "Rugged Bear." In this film Humphrey disguises himself as a bearskin rug in order to survive bear hunting season. Who was Humphrey the co-star to?

Answer: Donald Duck

Poor old Humphrey just wants to begin his long winter nap, but hunter Donald has other ideas.
6. Humphrey achieved star billing in his sixth film, "Hooked Bear." In this short, what is Humphrey attempting to do?

Answer: Intercept fish intended for fishermen as the ranger stocks the lake.

Humphrey sees fish for dinner. To heck with the fishermen!
7. "In The Bag," Humphrey's last film before his later comeback, was released in 1956. This film featured Humphrey and the other bears cleaning up the park and dancing the what?

Answer: bump

Ranger Woodlore needs the park cleaned up after summer visitors have gone. He devises a plan to trick the bears into picking up litter by dancing to a snappy work-song. Humphrey and the other bears use sharpened sticks to "pick up the paper and put it in the bag--bump, bump." Any bear that succeeds in his task will receive dinner. Humphrey tries so very hard at the task but everything seems to go wrong.
8. Just as Humphrey was headed for stardom, what happened in 1957 that caused his rising star to fade?

Answer: Disney was just then phasing out short cartoons.

Disney began to phase out it short cartoons just when Humphrey was reaching his peak. It was at least three years before Disney made any shorts and then rarely, even with established stars like Mickey and Donald. Humphrey wasn't established enough for a comeback at that time. Walt Disney passed away in 1966.

The studio made many more animated full length films after 1957, "101 Dalmatians," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Lion King" to name just three of many.
9. Walter Lantz Studios had its own verision of Humphrey and the ranger. What were their names?

Answer: Fatso Bear and Ranger Willoughby

Yogi and Boo Boo were creations of Hanna-Barbera. Their ranger was John Smith. Smokey Bear, of course, is the symbol for fire prevention. Ranger Rick is a magazine about nature for children. Fatso and Ranger Bear starred in a short entitled "Hunger Strife."
10. Humphrey has appeared in more modern cartoons, as well as episodes such as "Bearing Up Baby."

Answer: True

Humphrey has appeared in shorts and episodes such as "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," "Goof Troop," "Mickey Mouse Works," and "House of Mouse." Some critics claim that Humphrey is the most neglected of Disney's characters that had their own cartoon shorts.
