Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The dog called Bulls-eye might not have been evil, but his owner certainly was. In which Dickens novel did a dog called this appear?

Answer: Oliver Twist

Bill Sikes is the owner of Bulls-eye. Sikes is a wicked criminal who mistreats, and eventually kills, Nancy, who has befriended Oliver, a member of Fagin's gang. While trying to avoid the police, Sikes tries to drown the faithful dog, but eventually manages only to meet his own death, by hanging.
2. 'You're a bad dog baby, but I still want you around' are lyrics from 'Get Down', sung by which artist?

Answer: Gilbert O'Sullivan

Born in Ireland with the real first name of Raymond, Gilbert O'Sullivan's first hit was in 1970 when 'Nothing Rhymed' reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart. He followed this with 'Alone Again (Naturally)', reaching number one with it the US Billboard Hot 100, and 'Clair' in 1972. 'Get Down' was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1973.
3. In Norse mytholgy, the gate of Hel is guarded by a dog bearing which name?

Answer: Garm

Hel refers to both a place, where men who have led evil lives are sent on death, and a woman in charge of it, and a daughter of Loki. The guardian of the gate is described as a bloodstained dog, sometimes a wolf, known as Garm or Garmr.

Sleipnir is a horse, Huginn is one of Odin's two ravens, with Muninn being the other, and Geri (and Freki) is a wolf.
4. With ambitions to take over the world, Dogbert, owned by Dilbert, was created by which comic strip artist?

Answer: Scott Adams

Scott Adams created the character of Dilbert in 1989. He is an employee in a company run by bureaucrats who keep the staff tied up in red tape. The comic strip comments on the absurdities of corporate culture. Dogbert spends his time aiming to become master of a world where humans are his slaves.

Bill Watterson created 'Calvin and Hobbes', Al Capp brought us 'Li'l Abner' and Dik Browne created 'Hagar the Horrible'.
5. The television film 'Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell' (1978) starred which actor, who also played Colonel Sam Trautman in the films about Rambo?

Answer: Richard Crenna

The 'made for television' film tells the story of an ordinary family who adopt a German shepherd dog. What they are unaware of is that the dog has been bred by satanists and is possessed by the devil, causing it to try to injure and kill anyone it comes into contact with.

Crenna played the father of the family and also appeared in some of the 'Rambo' films where he is a fatherly presence in John Rambo's life.
6. Scud, from the 'Toy Story' films, definitely falls into the evil category. As what breed of dog is he depicted in the films?

Answer: Bull terrier

Owned by Sid, Andy's neighbour, who just loves to torture toys, Scud has been trained to do the same. He destroys toys in the same way Sid does, and causes problems to Woody and Buzz as they attempt to make their escape from Sid in the original film, which came out in 1995.
7. Appearing on their fourth studio album, in 1971, the song 'Black Dog' was the work of which band?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

The song was inspired by an actual dog seen near the studios, with the music written by band members John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, while Robert Plant contributed the lyrics. The album on which it appeared has no title, so is usually referred to as 'Led Zeppelin IV'.

It also includes the song which has become the band's best known - you may have heard it, or parts of it, since the whole thing lasts eight minutes. It's called 'Stairway to Heaven'.
8. Padfoot, a large black dog, is the animal form of which character from the 'Harry Potter' novels?

Answer: Sirius Black

The clue is, of course, in the character name since Sirius is the dog star. Sirius Black is godfather to Harry Potter, and is the 'Prisoner of Azkaban' in the third book in the 'Harry Potter' series. His escape from the prison, and appearances as a black dog, spread fear and anxiety at Hogwart's, but Sirius is proved to be innocent, having been framed by Peter Pettigrew. Pettigrew himself appears in rat form, while James Potter turns into a stag. Professor McGonagall becomes a cat when it suits her.
9. The Barghest is a monster, depicted as a black dog. It is associated with the legends of which country?

Answer: England

The Barghest is particularly associated with the northern areas of England, appearing in folk lore from Yorkshire, in particular. It is considered to be an omen of imminent death. It features regularly in popular culture, including in 'The Witches', written by Roald Dahl, and in the video game 'Heartbound'.
10. Maybe we need a wicked cat to keep these dogs in order. Dr Evil's cat, Mr Bigglesworth, began the Austin Powers film series as a Persian, but ended up as which cat species?

Answer: Sphynx

In the same way Austin Powers is a spoof James Bond, Dr Evil is a version of the villain Blofeld, known for his white Persian cat. Mr Bigglesworth begins the film as a Persian himself, before becoming a Sphynx,a hairless breed. The loss of hair is explained by a failure in the cryogenic process which brought the cat back to life. The cat actor who played the role was named Ted Nude-Gent.
