Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Speaking of a doctor in the house, what is the first name of "House, M.D."?

Answer: Gregory

Hugh Laurie (formerly of "Fry and Laurie") played the acerbic Dr. Gregory House from 2004 through 2012. Although Laurie is British, he played the role of an American doctor who is a brilliant diagnostician who breaks all the rules and offends everyone. Oh, and did I mention he is addicted to the pain killer Vicodin, and having an on-again, off-again love affair with Dr. Lisa Cuddy who is Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (same hospital where Greg works)? He also has only half a muscle in his right leg (causing the pain that created the addiction), walks with a cane and rides a scooter. How cool is he?
2. Which actor played the role of Dr. Ryan Stone in the movie "Gravity"?

Answer: Sandra Bullock

In the 2013 movie, Sandra Bullock plays the role of Dr. Ryan Stone, a biomedical engineer on her first space mission on the NASA space shuttle Explorer, with the help of astronaut Lieutenant Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) on his final mission. The film is suspenseful, visually stunning and, perhaps, ambiguous in terms of reality vs. hallucination.

It was written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron and received ten Oscar nominations at the 86th Academy Awards. Sandra Bullock was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for "Gravity", an award she won for the 2009 movie "The Blind Side".
3. After whom or what did Dr. Hester Crane of "Frasier" name her children?

Answer: her favorite lab rats

Anyone who's watched the witty and wonderful sitcom "Frasier" (1993-2004) knows that Frasier's and Niles' father, Martin Crane, was a policeman and very different from his two 'mannered' sons. One episode clears up any genetic issues by showing us Dr.

Hester Rose Crane (nee Palmer) played by Rita Wilson. We find out that, like her sons, Hester was a psychiatrist. She was called in on a criminal case by the Seattle Police Department to profile a murder suspect when she met Martin over the chalk outline of a body.

In an episode called "Are You Being Served" (1997), it was revealed in her journals that Hester named her sons after her two favorite lab rats.
4. In "Back to the Future" what was the name of the doctor played by Christopher Lloyd?

Answer: Dr. Emmett Brown

According to "Back to the Future", Emmett Lathrop 'Doc' Brown, Ph.D was the inventor of the first time machine which he built from a DeLorean. Christopher Lloyd (after his Reverend Jim Ignatowski days) plays Dr. Brown as a brilliant and eccentric scientist and physicist, and a cross between Albert Einstein and Leopold Stowkowski (one of the incorrect choices). "Empire Magazine" rated Doc Brown at #76 on the list of the 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time. Doc appeared in each one of the trilogy films where we find out he married Clara Clayton and had two sons: Jules Eratosthenes and Verne Newton.
5. With whom does Dr. Yuri Zhivago fall in love?

Answer: Lara

Yuri and Lara, perhaps one of the greatest love stories of all time. Dr. Yuri Zhivago is played by Omar Sharif and Lara Guishar (Larisa Fyodorovna Antipova) is played by Julie Christie. The 1965 movie is based on the 1957 book by Boris Pasternak, and the main focus takes place in Russia between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War I. Because of the politics of the time, the Communist Party of the USSR banned the book; in 1958 Pasternak won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

As far as Lara's character, she has an affair with her mother's lover, while Yuri marries his cousin but, like all good love stories, Yuri and Lara meet again and the spark of love is reignited.
6. On which sitcom would you find Dr. Bombay practicing?

Answer: Bewitched

Samantha Stephens, the witch on "Bewitched", often has to call in the 'witch doctor', Dr. Hubert Bombay, when an unearthly or supernatural illness crops up, by saying "Calling Dr. Bombay...Emergency! Come right away!". Usually he would show up before the call was finished, but occasionally he would be otherwise engaged (e.g., taking a bath); at those times, it would take a while, and he would show up in different costumes (a toga, formal dress, diving gear, etc.). Dr. Bombay (Bernard Fox) was a womanizer and cracked corny jokes, but I always looked forward to seeing him in an episode.
7. Which doctor could "talk to the animals"?

Answer: Dr. Dolittle

In 1920 Hugh Lofting wrote a children's novel called "The Story of Dr. Dolittle: Being the History of His Peculiar Life at Home and Astonishing Adventures in Foreign Parts Never Before Printed" about a veterinarian who prefers to work with animals rather than human patients.

The 1922 sequel "The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle" won a Newbery Award and was followed by 10 other novels (two of which were published posthumously). In the 1967 film, Rex Harrison portrays John Dolittle searching for the Great Pink Sea Snail.

In 1998, Eddie Murphy assayed the role complete with a family and a whole new plot, and in 2001 there was a sequel, "Dr. Dolittle 2".
8. In what movie did Groucho Marx play Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush?

Answer: A Day at the Races

The 1937 movie, "A Day at the Races", is the seventh film featuring the three Marx Brothers. Groucho plays Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush, a veterinarian who poses as a doctor and is hired as Chief of Staff at the failing Standish Sanitarium. Hackenbush wants to help the lovely owner, Judy Standish, (Maureen O'Sullivan - later mother of Mia Farrow) avoid bankruptcy. Along with the usual 'suspects', i.e., Margaret Dumont as a wealthy patient, Chico as Tony and Harpo as jockey Stuffy, they try to help the owner of an inept racehorse win the big race and save the day! "A Day at the Races" follows "A Night at the Opera" - Minnie's boys were busy.
9. We all know Dr. "Hawkeye" Pierce from the TV show "M.A.S.H.", but what were his 'real' first two names?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

Robert Altman's 1970 movie "M.A.S.H." was based on Richard Hooker's novel about a group of Army doctors at a 'Mobile Army Surgical Hospital' (4077th), situated near the front lines during the Korean War. The movie, like the TV show (1972-1983) featured Captain Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce as the lead character just trying to keep sane amid the horrors of war. Donald Sutherland starred in the movie, while Alan Alda played "Hawkeye" on the TV show for eleven years - that is longer than the actual Korean War! Many of the characters were the same in the movie and on the show.

It was groundbreaking in its use of humor to combat the unspeakable brutality they witnessed.
10. In "Marathon Man" who played the evil Dr. Christian Szell?

Answer: Laurence Olivier

Laurence Olivier (1907-1989) was a British actor whom many argued was the greatest actor of the 20th century. He first appeared on the stage in Noel Coward's play "Private Lives" and went on to play "Richard III" and "Oedipus", "The Entertainer" and "Othello".

He also appeared in many films later in his career, one of which was "Marathon Man" (1976) where he played the 'nightmare' dentist opposite Dustin Hoffman, where he tortured Thomas 'Babe' Levy (Hoffman) in the dentist's chair and continued to ask "Is it safe?" For his work he received a knighthood, four Academy Awards, five Emmys and far too many accolades and awards to mention!
