Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tezza1551's favourite comedian is Western Australian Queen of the Kimberley Mary G. Whose alter ego is Mary G?

Answer: Mark bin Bakar

Mark is an Indigenous radio announcer and comedian. Mary G is his creation and has featured on many radio broadcasts and at the Sydney Opera House.

Question by tezza1551
2. One of Lesley's favourite comedians was born in Dublin, enjoyed a cigarette and whisky on stage, and had a different story for everyone who asked him how he lost his fingertip. Which one of these four was he?

Answer: Dave Allen

Dave Allen was born in Dublin in 1936 and died in London in 2005. He based a lot of his routines on his strict Catholic upbringing. As an adult, he would call himself a "practising atheist." The cigarettes were real, but the "whisky" was almost certainly ginger beer.

All four were born in Ireland - Ed Byrne in Dublin in 1976, Dara O'Briain in County Wicklow in 1972, and Dylan Moran in County Meath in 1971 - but Dave Allen was the only one to incorporate a shortened finger into his act.

3. One of elvislennon's favourite comedians was born Alexander Jacob Gutman in New York in 1954. His family emigrated to Australia when he was an infant, and he went on to find fame in 1983 when he released the single "Australiana". What pseudonym was this funny man known by?

Answer: Austen Tayshus

"Australiana" spent eight weeks at the top of the Australian charts. It was written by Billy Birmingham, the man responsible for the cricket commentary parody "The Twelfth Man", which is also very funny if you're into cricket.

Question by elvislennon
4. Harpo Marx became famous without saying a word, clowning his way through Marx Brothers movies by making faces, blowing a horn and whistling to communicate. Do you know the most likely reason for his silence?

Answer: his voice was too deep for his screen image

Harpo's deep voice conflicted with his zany antics on screen. There's another belief that he decided to remain silent due to a negative review he received early in his career. In addition to his on-screen talent, he was an accomplished musician and painter. He retired in 1964, the same year of his death, and was posthumously inducted into the Croquet Hall of Fame in 1979 along with other show-business luminaries. There are at least a dozen Marx Brothers feature films; they are all favorites of mine.

5. Rockinsteve has been a fan of the films of Woody Allen for quite some time. Which of these films was NOT directed by Mr. Allen?

Answer: Play It Again, Sam

"Play It Again, Sam" featured Woody Allen as the lead actor but was directed by Herbert Ross.

6. A favourite comedian from AdjNZ's younger years was Billy T. James. He was named New Zealand's "Entertainer of the Decade" in 1985. His real name was William James Te Wehi Taitoko. Why did he change to his stage name when he went solo after touring N.Z. and Australia with the Maori Volcanics Showband?

Answer: He said it was something the Australians could pronounce.

He died aged 43 in 1991 from heart failure. The "Billy T Award" was founded in his honour in 1997 to recognise comedians of outstanding potential in New Zealand, our premier comedy award. In 2009 a major survey found 50% of respondents named him as the country's greatest comedian.

7. CmdrK grew up with television and one comedian he remembers was successful in the new medium with "Your Show of Shows". He parlayed his early success into a career that lasted for fifty years. Who was this man, whom we might say, came, saw and conquered?

Answer: Sid Caesar

Sid Caesar started his career in the 1930s as a musician and comedian. With the advent of TV, he was given a 90-minute variety show each week that featured many of the big acting and music stars of the time as well as his own zany routines. The show produced 160 episodes in four years. Caesar had numerous other shows and specials into the 1990s and still makes an occasional guest appearance.

8. Snowconeboy789's favourite comedian was always criticizing everything. Society, government, religion, criminal justice, you name it. His last "HBO" special was televised just four months before he passed away in 2008. Who was he?

Answer: George Carlin

George Denis Patrick Carlin lived from May 12, 1937 to June 22, 2008. Carlin's first HBO special was "On Location: George Carlin at USC" in 1977. Carlin had fourteen HBO specials, the most of any comedian. His last was "It's Bad For Ya" in 2008. Carlin had three heart attacks throughout his life, and finally died of heart failure at the age of 71.

Host Jon Stewart also has several correspondents who take on ridiculously absurd viewpoints regarding current events and caps it all off with a celebrity interview. Kufan888 can't get enough of which late night show on "Comedy Central"?

Answer: The Daily Show

I also enjoy the spin-off show which first aired in 2005. Stephen Colbert, host of "The Colbert Report", was one of John Stewart's long time correspondants. The two shows are almost always paired together. Together, the shows have been nominated for and have won many Emmy Awards.
