Lei Kung, the Thunderer, was the mystical realms greatest champion and he took the young Daniel under his wing when the boy arrived at the gates of K'un Lun with both his parents having been killed trying to reach the place. He taught him the ways of the place and how to deserve the honor and power of the Iron Fist. Danny still considers him a mentor and his greatest teacher. Yu Ti is Danny's foster uncle.

Instead he took the mutant and offered him his greatest desire, to fly again. Granting him razor sharp metal wings and the chance to serve as his Horseman of Death. Warren did this for a time until he finally rejoined his teammates in X-Factor and threw off the title of Death forever. Wolverine was also Death for a time but his healing factor and the X-Men saved him.

The Cajun X-Man, Gambit, is the current Death and it remains to be seen how that will play out. The former Shi-ar Empress and warrior Deathbird was never Death but was the Horseman War for a short time.
