Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nanomites (Film)

Answer: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)

Weapons expert, James McCullen, has created tiny beings called nanomites that have the power to devour metal and other materials. He has a long-range plan that involves launching a series of missiles filled with nanomites at four major global cities. The end result will create chaos and panic, which will enable him to create a new order controlled by his army of nanomite soldiers.

The Joes have to stop him. In the ensuing battle one of these missiles is fired at the Eiffel Tower, which is destroyed in spectacular fashion, before the Joes can hit the kill switch. The film stars Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
2. Hurled into space (Comic)

Answer: Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite (2007)

Seven super powered children are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreaves to "save the world". In this, the first issue of a limited release series comic book, the children, aged ten, are pitted against a very erratic but dangerous Eiffel Tower that is being controlled by an evil zombie robot called Gustave Eiffel. In the ensuing battle the tower is flung into space, seemingly lost forever. The Tower does manage to extract a modicum of revenge on the Umbrella Academy - it crash-lands back on Earth some twenty years later, directly on top of the Academy's headquarters.

This series was written by Gerard Way who is better known as the front-man of the rock band My Chemical Romance.
3. Attacked by alien robots (Film)

Answer: The Day the Earth Stopped (2008)

This was a direct-to-DVD science fiction film that stars C. Thomas Howell as Josh Myron. Josh encounters a humanoid female named Skye, played by Sinead McCafferty, who informs him that humans have become a threat to the galaxy. A team of robots was also landing with the task of tilting the Earth on its axis, thereby wiping out the human race. Skye's ultimatum to Josh is to deliver evidence that there is value in the existence of humans, by sunset, or die. (Good grief) I'm starting to understand why this was straight to DVD... in the end the Earth is saved (blah, blah, blah), but not before the robots have left a pile of destruction in their wake including a toppled over Eiffel Tower.
4. Shot to bits (Video game)

Answer: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)

This release continues with the first-person shooter video game franchise that was first launched in 2003. In this episode we see Price and Yuri pitted against the chaos causing Marakov. Marakov has kidnapped the Russian President, who was on his way to a peace conference with the USA with his primary goal is to have Russia take over Europe. To this end he sets of a series of chemical bombs that upset communications across the continent and allows the Russians to take over most of the continent. Price's ultimate mission is to take down Marakov but beforehand he and Yuri are chasing down the bomb maker (Volk) which leads to a savage battle in Paris that sees the destruction of the Eiffel Tower.
5. Rust Encruster (TV series)

Answer: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TV Series) (1992/3)

The episode in question is called "Rust Never Sleeps", the second episode of the "Vacation in Europe" side-season, that first aired in most of Europe in 1992 and in the US in 1993. Krang is in Dimension X working on his Hyper-Combustion Rocket that he intends to fire upon Paris.

When he learns that the Turtles are in Paris he gets impatient and, accidently, turns the rocket into a Rust Encruster. Bebop and Rocksteady drive the rocket to Paris and fire on the Tower, which immediately starts to rust and have bits fall off it.

The Turtles save the day and, before the Tower collapses, Donatello is able to re-jig the rocket so that it de-oxidizes the Eiffel Tower. The Turtles then celebrate with a breakfast pizza.
6. Ion Cannon (Video game)

Answer: Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dream (1995)

This is a real-time video strategy game where you, as the player, get to tackle the mission from two angles. The first is as a member of the Global Defence Initiative (GDI) where you are seeking to destroy the European base of the Brotherhood of Nod. In the second, you are enlisted by the Brotherhood to drive the GDI out of North Africa.

In the process you steal the GDI's Ion Cannon and then have the opportunity to destroy their public image by wiping out an iconic international landmark. The Eiffel Tower is one of those.
7. Turned into a giant toothpick (Animated film)

Answer: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

Flint Lockwood invents a machine that converts water into food. After turning it on it causes damage to his town and he's convinced that it's a failure. He wakes the next day to find rainbow clouds in the sky that rain cheeseburgers and, suddenly, his home town becomes a booming food tourism centre. Greed amongst some residents soon gets in the way and, before you know it, the Earth is being threatened by a spaghetti and meatballs tornado.

This is an animated feature film that drew its inspiration from a book, with the same title, written and published in 1978 by Judi & Ron Barrett. Yes, I know, that the Tower does not get destroyed in this but having a giant sandwich fall on it so the Tower skewers it like a toothpick was just too much fun to leave out.

The giant olive that then lands on its point is pure genius.
8. Super-storm (TV mini-series)

Answer: Category 7: The End of the World (2005)

This was a four-hour mini-series that was broadcast in two parts by the CBS network. It is a sequel to, and follows the events immediately after, "Category 6: Day of Destruction". The super-storm that hit Chicago in the first series has not abated and is growing in size and spreading.

Other category 6 storms are developing, one which slams through Paris and destroys the Eiffel Tower. However, the real danger is that two of these storms are converging on Washington D.C. and once they collide they will create a category 7 storm that will obliterate everything in its path.

This could be... the end of the world. Oh no!
9. Used to destroy an alien spacecraft (Comic)

Answer: The Authority: Kev. Vol 1 (2002)

This one-shot comic book is the first time we get to see Kev Hawkins make an appearance in DC Comics' "Wildstorm Universe". Kev is a former member of the SAS who manages to have the worst luck of anyone on Wildstorm Earth. He is given a mission by his boss to kill the super-hero team known as the Authority. To assist him on the mission he is given a gun that no one knows is loaded and that the ammunition it contains is deadly, even to the invulnerable Apollo. Consequently, when he is teleported to the Carrier he wipes the team out in a mere twelve seconds. That's when he finds out that his boss was really an alien pretending to be his boss, looking to remove the Authority so that it opens the door for his Conquer-nauts to take over the Earth. Kev persuades the Carrier to reverse time to the point just prior to him destroying the Authority so that they can return to Earth and save it.

In the battle the Eiffel Tower is used as a spear to destroy one of the alien spacecraft.
10. Rogue meteorite (Film)

Answer: Armageddon (1998)

Michael Bay directs, Jerry Bruckheimer produces and Bruce Willis is the lead in this science fiction disaster movie that became the highest grossing film of 1998. The movie sees a group of deep core drillers attempting to stop a giant asteroid crashing into the Earth and wiping us out.

The crew encounter a whole series of mini-disasters that threaten to derail the project and doom the planet. The world does prevail but, along the way, a couple of rogue meteorites destroy both Shanghai and Paris. We can tell its Paris because it (the meteorite) goes directly for the Eiffel Tower.
