Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although there are a few exceptions, a radio station with call letters beginning with 'W' indicates what?

Answer: It was originally licensed in a state east of the Mississippi.

Stations licensed west of the Mississippi usually begin with 'K'. This rule also applies to TV stations.
2. The portion of the FM dial between 88 and 92 MHz is usually reserved for what type of station?

Answer: Educational

Virtually all college radio stations can be found in this frequency range.
3. What is the maximum broadcasting power allowed for a U.S. radio station?

Answer: 100,000 watts

In general, the higher the wattage of the station, the wider the broadcasting range.
4. What does the kHz legend on the AM dial mean?

Answer: Kilohertz

AM stations broadcast in kilohertz, while FM stations broadcast in megahertz.
5. What does it mean if a radio station is 'clear channel'?

Answer: It is the only station in the country to broadcast at that frequency.

Clear Channel meant that there was no other broadcast allowed at that frequency within a certain range -- usually 700 - 1000 miles. Other stations operating near the frequency of a Clear Channel had to go off the air at night or significantly "power down" at sunset.
