Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the host of "Morningside" from 1982 to 1997?

Answer: Peter Gzowski

Gzowski's "Morningside" provided consistently good, and sometimes great, radio for fifteen years, three hours a day, five days a week.
2. Who was the first host of "Morningside"?

Answer: Don Harron

Don Harron has had a long career in radio, television, and on stage, both acting and writing. He is well known for his "alter ego", Charlie Farquarson.
3. Who were the regular members of the Tuesday political panel on "Morningside"?

Answer: Dalton Camp, Eric Kierans, Stephen Lewis

Dalton Camp was the conservative, Eric Kierans the liberal, and Stephen Lewis the lefty in these always interesting discussions.
4. Well, we could go on about "Morningside" all day (remember the interview with Elly Danica, in her former church in a small Saskatchewan town? or Dennis Kaye, the ALS victim with the great sense of humour?) but let's go on to something else. Who used to give, as a mnemonic for his show's postal code, "Make Five Wienies, I'll Eat Six"?

Answer: Arthur Black

Saturday mornings just haven't been the same since "Basic Black" went off the air in 2002.
5. What program was associated with the words "sad goat", and had, not only its own tartan, but its own "Goat of Arms", complete with Latin motto?

Answer: Richardson's Roundup

This all began because of the mnemonic for this phone-in show's number, 1-888-SAD-GOAT. It evolved into some monumental silliness, such as the Latin motto "Vox Populi Vox Caprae" (the voice of the people is the voice of the goat), and a tartan made of "goatlike" colours, such as black (for black humour) and white (for yogurt, hence "culture").

This was definitely one of my favorite radio shows, always interesting.
6. Prior to the creation in 1997 of "Richardson's Roundup", what was in the 2-4 pm weekday time slot?

Answer: Gabereau

Bill Richardson played various roles on "Gabereau" over the years, and hosted a summer replacement series from 1992-96 called "Crossroads", which was in many ways a precursor to "The Roundup".
7. Who hosted a music program at Sunday lunchtime for over 40 years, retiring in 1997?

Answer: Clyde Gilmour

"Gilmour's Albums" was entirely composed of records from Clyde Gilmour's personal collection. I worked at a major Toronto record store in the early '80s, and Gilmour was a legend there. Rumour had it that he had a copy of every record ever made until the birth of rock-and-roll exploded the recording industry, and from listening to his radio show for years, I wouldn't be surprised if Rumour was right.
8. "C'est La Vie" was a weekly program about?

Answer: life in French-speaking Canada

"C'est La Vie" began in 1998, hosted by the ever-busy Bernard St-Laurent. One of its most popular features was the "word of the week", introducing the listener to the French-Canadian language. The show has disappeared from Radio One since St-Laurent's retirement in 2015.
9. Danny Finkleman, host of "Finkleman's Forty-Fives", started his career with the CBC on what show?

Answer: This Country in the Morning

Danny started with the CBC in 1969, and retired in 2005. He has held many on and off air positions in the years since.
10. What is the name of the Sunday afternoon live phone-in, hosted by Rex Murphy?

Answer: Cross Country Checkup

This program has been on the air for most Sundays since 1965. The always erudite Mr Murphy brings his voluminous vocabulary to the job, along with, let us say, a face just made for radio.
11. This segment of "This Morning" asked listeners to write in their own made-up words to fill in gaps and omissions in the English language.

Answer: Wanted Words

The segment, produced by Jane Farrow, eventually spawned two books full of wonderful and useful words invented by Canada's "wordies".
12. This Sunday afternoon show, hosted by Lorne Elliott, started in 1996.

Answer: Madly Off in All Directions

This comedy show consisted of taped segments of Lorne Elliott's concerts, with local musicians and comics, from various cities and towns around the country.
13. Lister Sinclair was the host for many years of this show.

Answer: Ideas

"Ideas" started in 1964. It was hosted by Lister Sinclair from 1983 to 1999. He continued to contribute fairly regularly even after his retirement.
14. This early evening current affairs show started in 1968. It has been hosted over the years by Barbara Frum, Michael Enright and Mary Lou Finlay.

Answer: As It Happens

"As It Happens" started as a 5 1/2 hour phone show, and in 1973, moved to the current 90 minute format. It combines serious topical interviews with bizarre explorations of eccentric characters and odd events. Radio that always knows how far it is to Reading.
15. What is the motto of "The Vinyl Cafe", the "World's Smallest Record Store"?

Answer: we may not be big, but we're small

"The Vinyl Cafe" is a mix of music and comic stories, taped in concert and hosted by Stuart McLean. It began going on the road in 1998. It stopped producing new episodes in 2015 when McLean became very ill - he passed away in 2017.
