I was fascinated to discover recently that many of our well-known comic book Superheroes actually have religious beliefs, and that the variety of faiths represented is quite broad. Here's a light-hearted look at a serious subject.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Superman's alter-ego, as most will know, is Clark Kent. He grew up in Smallville, Kansas, attending which church with his mother until he was fourteen years old?

Answer: Methodist

'Action Comics' #850 of August 2007 establishes Clark's religious roots in Methodism.
Scientology was incorporated in 1953, whereas Superman was created in 1933 and first published in 1938.
2. After the murder of his parents, Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, travelled the Orient for many years studying in various monasteries. From which of the following did he derive most of his philosophical and martial arts training?

Answer: Buddhism

There is some debate over Bruce Wayne's religious beliefs. A variety of visual and storyline clues in the comics and movies indicate that he is either a lapsed Catholic or Episcopalian (as per his father and mother respectively). The training he undertook for his 'crusade,' however, was for the most part with Buddhist monks.
3. Before becoming Spider-Man, Peter Parker was raised by his devout Aunt May. The influence of her faith is apparent in Parker, who has been portrayed both praying and expressing his belief in God. What is their religious affiliation?

Answer: Protestant

Interestingly, while writer J Michael Straczynski identifies himself as an atheist, he has been most overt in demonstrating Parker's Protestant Christian spirituality and faith.
Aunt May's denominational background has never been specified.
Original creator, Stan Lee, is Jewish, and artist Steve Ditko is an Objectivist.
4. The religion of which female superhero can best be described as "Greco-Roman Classical?" It may help to know that her background lies in the Amazonian civilization.

Answer: Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman, otherwise known as Princess Diana, was created by William Marston in 1941. The gods of Olympus feature heavily in Diana's origins and early life, and have regularly appeared in story-lines, both for good and ill.
5. Steve Rogers (Captain America) faced a tricky religious situation when dating long-time girlfriend, Bernie Rosenthal. What was the basis of his dilemma?

Answer: Both are very devout, but he is Protestant, she is Jewish

The spiritual depth of Captain America has always been very much part of his character. Solidly Protestant, his values epitomise mainstream 'apple-pie' American values. His faith in God finds demonstration in his strong ethical and moral standards.
6. You may not have heard of Billy Batson, but you might know his superhero alter-ego. What one word did young Billy cry out, drawing on the heroes of antiquity to become the adult Captain Marvel?

Answer: Shazam

"SHAZAM!" transforms Billy into Captain Marvel, who possesses the following characteristics:
S - the wisdom of Solomon
H - the strength of Hercules
A - the stamina of Atlas
Z - the power of Zeus, including invulnerability
A - the courage of Achilles
M - the speed of Mercury, and the power to fly...

...so, mostly associated with Greek mythology, with a dash of Old Testament Judaism for good measure!
7. The Hulk is essentially non-religious, however the marriage of his alter-ego, Bruce Banner, may provide some clue as to HIS religious affiliation. What was Banner's wife training to become prior to their union?

Answer: A Catholic nun

When Betty Ross thought Bruce Banner was dead, she joined a Catholic convent and began training to become a nun. She renounced her vows on learning that he was still alive, and they later married in the Catholic church.
8. Benjamin Jacob Grimm is a rock-solid founding member of The Fantastic Four - "The Thing." What religious roots are indicated by his name?

Answer: Jewish

Ben's religious beliefs are confirmed when he prays the Hebrew confession, "Sh'ma Yisrael" over wounded pawnbroker, Mr Sheckerberg, from whom he had stolen a Star of David as a teenager.
("Fantastic Four" No. 56, Vol 3)
9. Hellboy was found abandoned as an infant, but was raised by his guardian in the traditions of a specific church. What reminder of that faith does he have on him at all times?

Answer: Rosary

Although himself a demon/human hybrid, Hellboy works for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense as a defender of mankind against demonic and other mystical threats. He was raised a traditional Catholic by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm.
10. Mississippi-raised Rogue from the 'X-Men' series seems to have had something of a religious experience as her character has evolved. Introduced as a villain with a good heart, she now fights for right, and has been specifically linked with which religious group?

Answer: Southern Baptist

In 'X-Men' #172 (2005) Rogue is directly identified as a "Southern Baptist girl," although her assertion that "It (physical intimacy outside of marriage) ain't no sin if y'all truly love each other" is clearly not Baptist doctrine!
