Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Snoopy hate for people to do to him all the time?

Answer: Pat him on the head

This happened so often it made Snoopy think, "No wonder when I go home every night, I have a splitting headache!"
2. What trick was Snoopy able to perform with his ears?

Answer: Balance a bottle of pop on them

Even though Charlie Brown thought he did it effortlessly, it was a huge strain on poor 'ol Snoopy's ears.
3. A running gag through many of these early strips was Charlie Brown's continuing attempt to beat Lucy at checkers. By December, 1953 how many games had Lucy won against Charlie Brown?

Answer: 10,000

Even though Lucy was so proud of herself for being the first person in history to win 10,000 checker games in a row Charlie Brown put her in her place by reminding her that he was the first person in history to LOSE 10,000 checker games in a row.
4. What irritating personality trait did Charlie Brown exhibit in these early strips?

Answer: He was self-absorbed

Any time someone would make a comment about themselves Charlie Brown would babble on and on about himself and his own problems. In the later years this would turn into a full-blown neurosis.
5. Who was always beating Charlie Brown at marbles?

Answer: Patty

Since they always played for "keeps" he lost over 900 marbles to Patty. Anyone know how to play marbles anymore?
6. What toy did Linus become very proficient at playing with?

Answer: His blocks

Linus began making very intricate "sculptures" out of his blocks. He would also use them to make helpful things for himself such as a chair for watching television or steps to climb up to reach the cookies.
7. What first happened in May of 1954?

Lucy is the one who deduced that Linus was carrying it around for security. She explained that the best method was to rub one edge of the blanket against your cheek and another edge against one of your ears.
8. What pastime kept Lucy busy in the evenings?

Answer: Trying to count all the stars

At one point she decided it would be easier if she were closer to the stars so she stood on a chair. Apparently, it didn't help much.
9. In May of 1954 Charlie Brown entered Lucy in an amatuer State Championship golf tournament. This series ran all month in the Sunday comics. Lucy was one hole away from taking the championship. Why didn't she win?

Answer: She had to go home for a nap

This was the first time that Schultz ran a series over several weekends. It's also one of the few times that adults were actually drawn in even though it was only their legs. By scale Charlie Brown and Lucy appeared to only be two feet tall.
10. What was Charlie Brown's LEAST favorite flavor of candy?

Answer: Coconut

Charlie Brown had a fit when he heard a radio commercial for a coconut flavored cough syrup!

Surprisingly, Pig-Pen liked to take baths. His problem was he likes to get dirty even more!
12. Which two characters began a decades long relationship of unrequited love in January of 1954?

Answer: Lucy and Schroeder

The first time Lucy tried to make Schroeder notice her she danced upon his piano which was, of course, probably the worst thing she could have done!
13. After a while Lucy tired of stargazing. What did she start counting next?

Answer: Raindrops

Once again Mother Nature got the best of Lucy.
14. On what did the early "Peanuts" characters write their thoughts and opinions?

Answer: A wooden fence

They expressed everything from who loves whom to their opinions of Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown himself contributed many times to the fence. He considered himself quite the philosopher.
15. Who wrote the forward for this volume of "The Complete Peanuts - 1953 to 1954?

Answer: Walter Cronkite

Walter Cronkite lamented the fact that he was to visit with Schultz at his home but due to an assignment he was unable to make the visit before Sparky's untimely death.
