Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Back in the 1960s there were several medical dramas on television. One such drama starred Vince Edwards and co-starred Sam Jaffe, who narrated the same introduction every week. Which doctor did Vince Edwards play?

Answer: Ben Casey

"Ben Casey" ran from 1961 to 1966. Vince Edwards played the title role. Actor Sam Jaffe co-starred as Ben's mentor, Dr. David Zorba, until Franchot Tone replaced him in 1965. Each episode contained several story lines. Ben Casey himself was serious, idealistic, but very capable.
2. This classic medical drama ran from 1969 to 1976. Robert Young played the title role and a young James Brolin co-starred. Can you guess which doctor Robert Young played?

Answer: Marcus Welby

I remember watching the series "Marcus Welby, M.D." every week. Robert Young was excellent in his role as a family practice physician. He brought warmth to the character, much like he did in an earlier series "Father Knows Best". James Brolin played Dr. Steven Kiley.

The show drew criticism from critics and the public for airing episodes with the themes of homosexuality and pedophilia. This in turn led to a debate over censorship and the media.
3. This doctor appeared on the television series "The Fugitive" from 1963 to 1967. Later a movie was made with the same title and starred Harrison Ford as the fugitive doctor. What was his name?

Answer: Richard Kimble

David Janssen played the role of Dr. Richard Kimble, a pediatrician accused of killing his wife. We know the "one-armed man" did it. Dr. Kimble spent the entire run of the show both searching for the true killer and trying to elude the police. Did the good doctor ever find the real killer? Of course, and that ended the show's run.
4. Actress Jane Seymour played the role of a female doctor in Colorado Springs during the 1800s. The series ran from 1993 to 1998 and gained a lot of fans. Can you remember the name of the doctor Jane played?

Answer: Michaela Quinn

"Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" was a very popular 1990s drama. The premise of the show centered around Dr. Michaela Quinn, or Dr. Mike, a doctor from Boston who had relocated to Colorado Springs to set up her own practice. She is left to raise a friend's three young children after the friend's death. Along the way she meets the rugged Byron Sully, a mountain man, with whom she eventually falls in love. Over the years the show featured many memorable characters and story lines.
5. In 1957 a novel about the Russian Revolution was published. Its author was Boris Pasternak. Director David Lean adapted the book for the big screen in 1965. Omar Sharif played the title role of the movie and Julie Christie played his love interest. Can you recall the name of this doctor?

Answer: Yuri Zhivago

The film "Dr. Zhivago" told the story of the surgeon and poet, Yuri Zhivago, before and after the Russian Revolution. Yuri Zhivago was a man torn between two women and his political beliefs. The movie won five Oscars. Omar Sharif's son, Tarek, also appeared in the movie, portraying his father's character at a young age.
6. This author and cartoonist was born Theodor Geisel but children and adults the world over know him by a different name. Can you name this famous "doctor?"

Answer: Dr. Seuss

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. His early career involved writing ad campaigns for large companies. His first book "And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street" was published in 1937, but not before being rejected many times. Geisel's clever rhyming and colorful illustrations were a welcome change from the dull books written for children at that time.
7. In the 1980s, Christopher Lloyd starred in a movie trilogy called "Back To The Future." What was the name of the doctor he portrayed?

Answer: Emmett Brown

Michael J. Fox also starred in the trilogy as Marty McFly. Dr. Brown and Marty both traveled through time in style in the doctor's time machine, the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car. When Marty travels back to the year 1955 and meets his parents when they were teenagers, humorous situations ensue. The paradox of time travel was mentioned by Doc Brown several times throughout the movies.
8. Another medical drama, starring Richard Chamberlain, appeared on the scene in the early 1960s. It actually debuted the same year as "Ben Casey". Richard Chamberlain played the young intern at Blair General, a fictitious hospital. What was his name?

Answer: James Kildare

"Dr. Kildare" ran from 1961 to 1965 and was a very popular medical drama. The character of Dr. Kildare actually began with a series of movies in the 1930s and 1940s. Actors Joel McCrae and Lew Ayres both starred as Dr. Kildare in the earlier movies. The story lines of the T.V. show were varied and, against the advice of his mentor Dr. Gillespie, Kildare often managed to become embroiled in the personal lives of his patients.
9. In 1886 a novella was published about a very strange doctor. The premise of the book dealt with the dual nature of man. The author was Robert Louis Stevenson. The book has been made into movies and even a Broadway musical. The doctor's alter ego was named Edward Hyde. What was his other name?

Answer: Henry Jekyll

"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" has become such a classic that even the two names have entered the English lexicon. Have you ever heard of someone being described as having a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality? Critics have tried to explain Jekyll's dual nature in many ways, including sexual and religious repression in Victorian society.
10. A four word title ends this quiz: "Silence of the Lambs." Name the psychiatrist who enjoyed a meal of "liver, fava beans and a nice Chianti."

Answer: Hannibal Lecter

The author of "Silence of the Lambs," Thomas Harris, has never divulged which serial killer or killers he patterned his characters after, although there has been much speculation. Anthony Hopkins received a Best Actor Oscar for his chilling portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

The character was first introduced in the novel Red Dragon. The prequel, Hannibal Rising, written in 2006, explains why Hannibal became a cannibalistic serial killer.
