Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which artist created "The Family Circus"?

Answer: Bil Keane

Bil Keane has said that he dropped the second "L" in his name "to be different."
2. What year did the strip first debut?

Answer: 1960

When the strip first began, it was titled "The Family Circle," but the magazine "Family Circle" complained, so the strip was renamed "The Family Circus." It debuted in February 1960.
3. How many children are in the strip?

Answer: 4

Bil Keane and his wife had 5 children who served as the inspiration for the kids in the strip. The cartoon characters are named: Billy, Dolly, Jeffy, and P.J.; Mr. Keane's son Jeff is the only one who has a character named after him. Mr. Keane's other children are: Gayle, Neal, Glen, and Christopher.
4. What is the name of the oldest child?

Answer: Billy

Billy is the eldest child in the strip. Sometimes when Bil Keane is "on vacation," Billy sits in and draws the strip for him.
5. What are the names of the ghosts that the children often blame things on?

Answer: Not Me and Ida Know

When Mommy and Daddy find things amiss and they ask the children who is responsible, the kids will often say, "Not Me!" or "Ida Know!" The reader of the cartoon will see little ghosts in the panel.
6. What are the names of the 2 dogs that the family owns?

Answer: Barfy and Sam

The family also has a cat named Kittycat.
7. Most of the daily strips are just one panel in the shape of a circle.

Answer: True

According to the distributor's site (www.kingfeatures.com) the reason that the strip uses a circle is because it is meant to underscore the sense of closeness between the characters.
8. How many daughters are in the strip, (not including the mom and grandmother)?

Answer: 1

Dolly is the only girl in the "Family Circus" brood.
9. Which of the following characters wear(s) glasses?

Answer: Daddy and Grandma

Interestingly enough, the characters have not been updated to wear contact lenses. It would make sense for Daddy, but not Grandma, anyway.
10. This strip has inspired someone to do a parody called 'The Dysfunctional "Family Circus".'

Answer: True

'The Dysfunctional "Family Circus"' is definitely not what Bil Keane had in mind for the characters of his harmless, life-affirming strip, but it is kind of funny.
