Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Bruce Banner's full name?

Answer: Robert Bruce Banner

His full name was revealed when he guest-starred in "The Fantastic Four" #25 and #26.
2. In "The Incredible Hulk" #1, from the first series, what was Rick Jones doing when Bruce Banner found him in his car?

Answer: Playing a harmonica

The countdown had already started when Dr. Banner, through his binoculars, saw a vehicle had entered the testing zone for his Gamma bomb. He tells his assistant Igor to suspend the countdown while he races out there in a jeep to get the kid to safety. Dr. Banner is able to get Rick Jones into a ditch, but is caught in the full blast of his own device after Igor (whom nobody realizes is a Russian spy) lets the bomb detonate. "The Incredible Hulk" #1 introduces not only Bruce Banner, but many other characters who would play major roles in the various Hulk series, such as Betty Ross, her father General Ross and Rick Jones.
3. The original series, which premiered in 1962, only lasted six issues. Comic book legend Jack Kirby penciled the first five issues, but who did the pencil art for the series sixth and final issue?

Answer: Steve Ditko

Another legend in his own right, Steve Ditko did the last issue and returned to penciling duties when the Hulk was revived a year and a half later in "Tales To Astonish".
4. In the first "What If?" series, #2 asked "What If The Hulk Had The Brain Of Bruce Banner?" In this story, Gamma rays do change Bruce into The Hulk, but he retains his intelligence. When Galactus shows up, threatening to conquer the world, who does he and Mister Fantastic join forces with to combat this menace?

Answer: Professor X

"What If?" was a series that premiered in 1977. It ran along the lines of DC Comic's "Imaginary Stories", where previously published stories are re-imagined and diverge at a certain point creating an alternate timeline of events.

In this tale of what might have been, Bruce accepts an offer to visit Mister Fantastic to work on a cure to revert The Thing back into his human form. Professor X is also visiting and the two succeed in ridding Ben of his orange brick-like skin. While Bruce and Prof. X are still there, Galactus comes to earth. With no one else around and realizing there's no one else to stop him, Bruce, Professor X and Mister Fantastic enter a machine (referred to as a "Psychotron") built in part by Reed that combines the three of them into one super-powered being that refers to itself as "The X-Man". Ben returns just in time to see what he thinks is some new danger, and forgetting he's human, approaches the X-Man where he's swatted away like a fly, and tossed into some machinery. The combined mental power within the X-Man is no match for Galactus and he subsequently takes off. When the X-Man separates, all three realize they have lost their respective powers. Being tossed into the machinery and being exposed to the energy released by the X-Man has an adverse effect on Ben Grimm, for not only does he become The Thing again, but this time a stronger, more bestial version emerges. In this reality, it is The Thing who is now hunted by General Ross.
5. By what name was The Abomination formerly known?

Answer: Emil Blonsky

Emil Blonsky first appeared in "Tales To Astonish" #90 as a (what else?) Russian spy who receives a greater dose of Gamma radiation than Bruce Banner, creating not only a creature vastly stronger(initially), but one retaining his human intelligence. He seemingly kills The Hulk in their first fight, but is revived by his own Gamma ray machine.

The Abomination is later tricked into standing in a certain spot where Bruce Banner begins siphoning Gamma radiation off the Abomination. However, in the excitement, Bruce loses control and changes, thereby destroying the controls for the machine, but leaving a creature that is now the physical equal of The Hulk.

The conclusion of the story shows "The Stranger", a cosmic-powered alien, watching the battle from afar and whisking away The Abomination for further study.
6. "The Incredible Hulk" #140, dated June, 1971 featured a story plotted by what famous sci-fi author?

Answer: Harlan Ellison

"The Brute that Shouted Love at the Heart of the Atom" featured a script by Roy Thomas based on a plot supplied by Harlan Ellison with art by Herb Trimpe. In it, The Hulk is shrunken down by the villainous Psyklops where he finds himself on "K'ai", a world in a described "microuniverse", peopled with beings having green skin like himself.

When the wizards of K'ai put a spell upon the Hulk so that he can understand their language, his mind reverts back to that of Banner, while still in Hulk form.
7. Was Betty Ross ever affected by Gamma rays?

Answer: Yes

In "The Incredible Hulk" #168 and #169, she became The Harpy after being subjected to Gamma radiation supplied by Modok. Her physical appearance took on that of a bird's body with green feathers, wings and razor sharp claws while retaining the upper half of her human body, now colored green, that saw her able to shoot energy bolts from her hands.
8. Jim Wilson was a recurring character over the years in "The Incredible Hulk" who eventually died-what was the cause of his death?

Answer: AIDS

Jim Wilson was significant as being one of the early African-American characters in Marvel Comics, first appearing in "The Incredible Hulk" #131. In #388 of "The Incredible Hulk" he confides to Rick Jones that he is HIV+. In #420 he finally succumbs to the disease having had full-blown AIDS for some some time. Bruce Banner was reluctant to give his friend a transfusion of his own Gamma-tainted blood, for fear of letting loose another monster should Jim have changed as a result of the procedure.
9. In the "Planet Hulk" storyline, what was the name of the alien whom The Hulk married?

Answer: Caiera

In this multi-part adventure, The Hulk, deemed too dangerous to remain on Earth, is tricked and sent to another planet named Sakaar where he is at first enslaved and ordered to fight as a gladiator. Caiera, a lieutenant of The Red King, the planet's emperor, discovers that her own king is secretly killing his own people. She allies herself with The Hulk and other gladiators to fight back and eventually win.

The Hulk now becomes the "Green King", taking Caiera as his wife. The shuttle used to bring The Hulk to the planet Sakaar is erected as a monument, but its' engine explodes, killing most occupants of the city, including Caiera. As revenge, Hulk and his new-found comrades return to Earth to exact vengeance in the "World War Hulk" storyline.
10. Over the years, The Incredible Hulk has acquired many nicknames, which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Purple Pants

Just as The Hulk has had nicknames attached to him, so have others in The Marvel Universe: "Shellhead" (Iron Man), "Webslinger" (Spiderman), "Highpockets" (Giant-Man), to name a few.
