Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did "WWF Monday Night Raw" make its debut in the world of sports entertainment?

Answer: 1993

In January of 1993 "Raw" was born. It would have no wrestling competition until its third year.
2. In "The Monday Night War," "Mean" Gene Okerlund said this about the Manhattan Center where several early episodes of "Raw" took place. Please complete his statement. "Nothing against the building but it was a _____."

Answer: Toilet

I guess he didn't like the building. It wouldn't be long before "Raw" would go around the country.
3. Did Vince ever own what was to become WCW before 2001?

Answer: Yes

In fact, WWF programming once aired on Ted Turner's Superstation WTBS. After McMahon and Turner parted ways McMahon sold what became WCW to Jim Crockett. After having problems with money, Crockett sold the company to Turner.
4. WCW struggled in the early years Ted Turner owned the company. In 1993, rumors started going around that WCW wanted to hire an executive producer. Who did they hire?

Answer: Eric Bischoff

Eric Bischoff started by cutting costs anywhere he could. He also started filming WCW programming at the Disney MGM Studios instead of the small, dark arenas that WCW had filmed their programs in before Bischoff took over. Bischoff also started producing more Pay Per Views.

He kept increasing the number and the WWF matched him with an equal number until Bischoff settled on one every month. And finally Bischoff would give away the results of "Raw" during "Nitro." That was a very underhanded thing that he did but it brought in more viewers to "Nitro."
5. Ted Turner had a meeting with his new executive producer concerning what to do to compete with the WWF. They came up with "WCW Monday Nitro." It aired in 1995. Do you remember what month it debuted in?

Answer: September

"Nitro" debuted on September 4, 1995.
6. What former WWF mega star signed with WCW in June of 1994?

Answer: Hulk Hogan

Hogan had retired from wrestling until Bischoff persuaded him to sign with WCW. Hogan signed his WCW contract in a ceremony at the Disney MGM Studios where he also received a ticker tape parade.
7. Who made his WCW debut in December of 1994?

Answer: Randy Savage

Savage was unhappy in the WWF because he felt he wasn't being used properly. He made his first appearance in WCW on "WCW Saturday Night."
8. Who showed up on the debut episode of "WCW Monday Nitro" after wrestling for the WWF the previous day?

Answer: Lex Luger

At first, Eric Bischoff didn't want to sign Lex Luger because he worked with him before and didn't like him. Sting, who was a close friend of Luger's, persuaded Bischoff to sign him after several attempts.
9. Who showed up on "Nitro" in December of 1995 after competing for the WWF?

Answer: Madusa

Madusa competed in the WWF as Alundra Blaze and was the WWF Women's Champion at the time of her defection to WCW. She didn't know what to do with the title so she called Bischoff and asked him what she should do. Bischoff suggested that she bring it to TV with her. It was on "Nitro" that she dropped the title in a waste basket.
10. In May 1996, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash signed with WCW. What did Jim Cornette cite as Vince McMahon's chief blunder during the early years of the "Monday Night War"?

Answer: Taking people at their word.

Cornette said that Scott Hall gave Vince his notice to leave the WWF by fax. As for Kevin Nash he had gone to Vince and told him that he was with him but called him later to tell him that there was a lot of money that WCW was offering him and ended up leaving as well. Vince had been led to believe that Hall and Nash would stay with the WWF. Lex Luger had also convinced Vince that he wanted to stay with the WWF once his contract came up but when it came to signing a contract Luger kept coming up with excuses that held up the signing of a contract.

As a result of this Luger was free and ended up signing with WCW.
11. Who was the first of the Outsiders to show up on "Nitro?"

Answer: Scott Hall

In May 1996, Scott Hall jumped over a guard rail while a match was taking place. Here is exactly what he said once he entered the ring "You people...you know who I am. But you don't know why I'm here. Where is Billionaire Ted? Where is the Nacho Man? (Hall waved his finger in the air and talked like Randy Savage as he was saying Nacho Man.) That punk can't even get in the building. Me? I go wherever I want whenever I want."
12. Who showed up alongside the first Outsider the following week?

Answer: Kevin Nash

Hall and Nash would form the Outsiders. They posed as invaders from the WWF who intended to take over WCW.
13. The showdown between the Outsiders and WCW would take place at 1996's "Bash at The Beach." Representing WCW where Sting, Lex Luger, and Randy Savage. Hall and Nash had said in the weeks leading up to the event that there would be a third man on their team. Who was the third man?

Answer: Hulk Hogan

Late in this showdown Randy Savage was in control of Kevin Nash. Nash gave him a low blow. Hulk Hogan came down to the ring and everybody thought that he was going to aid WCW's team. But he turned on WCW by giving a leg drop to Savage. Hall and Nash got in the ring with Hogan and Hogan made a speech putting down WCW and its fans and telling them to stick it. Fans were so furious that they started throwing things at all three men. And with that the NWO was formed.
14. The WWF may have lost Hall and Nash, but their defections to WCW opened the door for a man who would play an important role in the "Monday Night War" and would become one of the biggest stars in wrestling history. Who was he?

Answer: Stone Cold Steve Austin

Austin was never used the right way in WCW. When he came to the WWF in 1996 he was known as the Ringmaster but fans didn't seem to care about his persona so the WWF just let him be himself. The result was Stone Cold Steve Austin. Jim Cornette said that the night after "King Of The Ring," there were lot of "Austin 3:16" signs.

It was then that Cornette knew that Austin would be a big deal.
15. According to the DVD, what was the main reason behind WCW's rise in the ratings in the early part of the "Monday Night War"?

Answer: All of these

For starters, you had the NWO which the Big Show said was so dominant that they became cool. Chris Jericho talked about WCW's Cruiserweight Division and how they would put on great matches. He said that with the Cruiserweights combined with the marquee value of the NWO, the WWF didn't have a chance at that time. Chris Benoit talked about how WCW was a fresh product.
16. Everyone knows that Stone Cold Steve Austin suffered a serious neck injury at the hands of Owen Hart at "Summerslam" 1997. Austin had to take time off as a result. Was he completely absent from the WWF during this time?

Answer: No

Although not able to wrestle, Austin was featured on WWF "Raw" every week raising hell like only he can. Jim Cornette said that Austin became more popular at this time then when he was wrestling. The incident where he injured his neck also planted the seed for the red hot Austin/McMahon feud. On September 22, 1997, Austin gave McMahon a "Stone Cold Stunner" for the first time.
17. How much did Vince McMahon fine Shawn Michaels for an act he felt was inappropriate?

Answer: $10,000

After Vince and Shawn had a debate about it, McMahon soon decided that he was going to start moving in a new direction. What followed was "Attitude." D-Generation X was formed during this period. Several new stars were also made during this period. Among them were The Rock, Stone Cold, Triple H, and Mankind.
18. Who did Stone Cold have a famous confrontation with on the January 19, 1998, episode of "Raw?"

Answer: Mike Tyson

Vince McMahon was going to make an announcement about Mike Tyson's involvement at "Wrestlemania" but Stone Cold came to the ring before McMahon could make the announcement. Austin and Tyson ended up having a confrontation that would lead Tyson to join D-Generation X. Tyson would turn on them by counting Shawn Michaels down after Austin had given Michaels a "Stone Cold Stunner." This marked Austin's first of 6 WWF Heavyweight Title reigns.

While I'm at it here is the complete list of not only the opponents he defeated for the title but also which events they occurred at. March 29, 1998-Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania XIV.) June 29, 1998-Kane ("Raw") March 28, 1999-The Rock (Wrestlemania XV) June 28, 1999-The Undertaker ("Raw") April 1, 2001-The Rock (Wrestlemania X-7) October 8, 2001-Kurt Angle ("Raw.")
19. How many consecutive weeks did "Nitro" beat "Raw" in the ratings?

Answer: 83

The turning point for "Raw" came on an April 1998 episode where Steve Austin challenged Vince McMahon to a match.
20. Which of the following happened on the July 6, 1998, episode of "Nitro"?

Answer: All of These

Goldberg won the WCW Heavyweight Title for the first time. It's one of the DVD extras.
21. On the January 4, 1999, episode of "Raw," Mankind defeated the Rock to become WWF Heavyweight Champion. "Raw" was a taped show back then. What was the direct sarcastic quote from Tony Schiavone regarding this match before "Nitro" went to break?

Answer: "That will put a lot of butts in the seats."

"Nitro" would pay a big price for this idiotic comment as viewers switched over to "Raw" to see the championship match.
22. The Big Show and Chris Jericho defected to the WWF in 1999. Who debuted first?

Answer: Big Show

Big Show debuted in February. Jericho on August 9, 1999.
23. In 1999, WCW was in big trouble. Eric Bischoff would be fired as ratings dropped. In his place came two writers from the WWF: Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara. Did things get any better for "Nitro" and WCW?

Answer: No

One of the lower points for this period was when Ferrara dressed up as Jim Ross and called himself "Oklahoma." Ross said his kids cried when they saw it. New WCW head Bill Busch fired Russo and Ferrara and brought back Eric Bischoff but it was too late for WCW to be saved.
24. Did Eric Bischoff try to buy WCW?

Answer: Yes

Eric thought he had a deal to buy WCW but one of his partners said the deal was off. It turned out that AOL Time Warner was willing to sell everything linked to WCW to Bischoff but didn't give Bischoff TV time. As a result of this Bischoff pulled out. WCW was sold to the WWF in March 2001.
25. When was the last "Nitro?"

Answer: March 2001

WCW aired the last "Nitro" on March 26, 2001.
