This event started in 1912 and was first performed at the Palace Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, in the presence of King George V and Queen Mary. The show featured singing, dancing, drag acts, music hall at its peak. In the year 2012, "The Royal Variety Performance" celebrated its centennary.

Mary Martin saved the day by going on stage after watching her son struggle as he tried to remember the words. Larry in 1980, made a superb entrance wearing a huge hat, began to sing, and dance.
