Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was known for his charisma and wit. Even though he was really born in Canada, from which country was this kilt-wearing legend billed?

Answer: Scotland

Born Roderick George Toombs (1954-2015), "Rowdy" Roddy Piper is widely recognized as one of the all-time WWE fan favorites. Originally from Saskatoon, Canada, Toombs started his wrestling career while he was very young. He also practiced other sports like judo and boxing. His talent for playing bagpipes led to the incorporation of the instrument into his entrance music. This led to his nickname "Roddy The Piper", which eventually evolved to Roddy Piper.

After wrestling for amateur organizations and in NWA developmental territories, Piper debuted with WWF in 1984. He quickly rose to prominence thanks to his unique skills with the microphone and the funny "one-liners" he could come up with on the spot. He soon was given his own segment, "Piper's Pit", where he would comically interview other wrestlers. One of the most famous moments in "Piper's Pit" (and perhaps in wrestling as a whole) happened in 1984, when Piper was interviewing Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. The segment started with Piper mocking Snuka and not allowing him to speak, but it quickly escalated when Piper hit Snuka in the head with a coconut. Though it is unclear whether the segment was scripted or improvised, there has been speculation that the incident led to Snuka suffering cognitive damage. Other memorable guests of "Piper's Pit" included Andre the Giant, Sgt. Slaughter, and Hulk Hogan.

Piper's character became famous for his bagpipe-based entrance music and the red kilt he wore. Toombs passed away in July 2015 from cardiopulmonary arrest. He had spoken in the past about the toll professional wrestling had taken on his body and health. Piper was honored by the WWE roster in the August 3, 2015 episode of "Raw".
2. The hilarious pair of Triple H and Shawn Michaels was known as D-Generation X. In a June 26, 2006 episode of "Raw", the duo impersonated which of the following two people in a very funny segment?

Answer: Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon

The original D-Generation X (or DX) started in 1997 when a feud between Vince and Shane McMahon was ongoing. Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and Chyna joined forces and started appearing as a group accompanied by Rick Rude. Between then and 2000, different iterations of the stable would emerge, with members like Billy Gunn, Road Dogg, and X-Pac. Founding members Triple H and Shawn Michaels brought back DX as a tag team in 2006, a year when they had a memorable feud with the McMahon family.

At the beginning of the June 26, 2006 episode of "Raw", Mr. McMahon's entrance music played and everyone was expecting to see the boss. Instead, Triple H came out in costume and hilariously impersonated Mr. McMahon by imitating the unique way in which he says "you're fired", "Wrestlemania", and "Triple H". Soon, Shane McMahon's music would play and Shawn Michaels would appear as well, doing an exaggerated impression of Shane's dancing. The segment is an all-time fan favorite, although the crowd at the arena didn't react as much as one might have expected, maybe because some were surprised by the sexually explicit references that were made. At that time, DX was in a feud with the McMahon family that also involved Big Show and The Spirit Squad.
3. Which funny superstar, also known as "The Great One", "The Brahma Bull", and "The People's Champion", entertained and electrified audiences when he yelled "it doesn't matter!"?

Answer: The Rock

Dwayne Johnson has become one of the most recognized names in entertainment. The son of historic wrestler Rocky Johnson, Dwayne played college football for the University of Miami, where he was awarded a full scholarship. He briefly played professional football in Canada before starting his career with the WWE. He debuted in 1996 and very quickly won the Intercontinental Championship. Fans initially didn't like the wrestler because some perceived he was being pushed too quickly. However, the charismatic Johnson earned the love and respect of the audience starting in 1998. Despite being a heel, The Rock became one of the most beloved wrestlers on the roster.

Over the years, he immortalized several funny catchphrases like "it doesn't matter" (with which he would often interrupt someone else before they could answer his questions), "lay the smackdown" (which would be the namesake for the show "Smackdown", and "finally, The Rock has come home" (which he would conclude with the name of the city or state where he was in). Parallel to his wrestling career The Rock also became a prolific actor who has appeared in dozens of Hollywood films.
4. This wrestler went by nicknames like "Y2J", "Lionheart", and "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla". Which of these performers provided wrestling fans with many hysterical moments throughout his career?

Answer: Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho was born in New York in 1970 but was raised in Canada, the home country of his parents. Jericho started wrestling in the 1990s and has since worked for promotions in the United States, Japan, and Mexico. Considered by many to be one of the greatest wrestlers in history, Jericho first joined WCW in 1996 and had a long feud with Dean Malenko. After a match where he defeated Marty Jannetty, Jericho started reading a list of the 1,004 wrestling holds he knew to mock Malenko.

Jericho then joined WWF in 1999 and almost immediately became an important part of the roster. Whether he was a heel or a face, Jericho always managed to engage and entertain crowds. In WWE's modern era, Jericho cut hilarious promos with CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, and Fandango, just to name a few. He would also make out-of-place yet hysterical comments in his segment "The Highlight Reel".
5. Eddie Guerrero was one of the all-time favorites of the WWE Universe for "lying, cheating, and stealing". Which of these items did Guerrero frequently use to deceive referees into disqualifying his opponents?

Answer: Steel chair

Eddie Guerrero was born in 1967 in El Paso, Texas. He was part of the legendary Guerrero dynasty, which also included his father Gory Guerrero and his nephew Chavo Guerrero. Eddie's career started in two of Mexico's most important wrestling promotions: CMLL and AAA. Guerrero then wrestled with WCW for much of the 1990s, where he won the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. Guerrero re-joined WWF in 2002 and soon became a fan favorite, despite having a gimmick based on "lying, cheating, and stealing".

Some of Guerrero's most entertaining moments in WWE television would involve him cheating by fooling the referees. One of his favorite tricks was to insert a forbidden item, like a championship belt or a steel chair, into the ring while the referee was distracted. Then, he would quickly give the item to his opponent and pretend he was hit, as the fans all laughed at his actions. Though referees didn't always disqualify the other wrestler, the move helped Guerrero distract his opponents so that he could surprise them with a pinfall attempt. Guerrero used the trick in matches against Mr. Kennedy, Kurt Angle, and Matt Hardy. He passed away in 2005 from heart failure, which is remembered as one of the most painful moments in recent professional wrestling history.
6. Santino Marella was one of the funniest WWE superstars of the late 2000s and early 2010s. In what became one of his most memorable segments, what kind of party did he share with Vladimir Kozlov and Sheamus during a "Raw" episode in Manchester, England?

Answer: Tea party

Santino Marella, whose real name is Anthony Carelli, is arguably one of the funniest wrestlers in WWE modern history. He was born in Mississauga, Canada in 1974 and began practicing judo and wrestling when he was a child. Carelli's career in the WWE would take off during a "Raw" episode held in Milan, Italy. Mr. McMahon picked him from the audience to compete against Umaga in an Intercontinental Championship match. In a shocking moment, Marella defeated Umaga to become the new champion. According to Carelli, he suffered an injury shortly after his debut, which led to him appearing on WWE TV in non-wrestling comedic segments.

Santino's character was almost exclusively built on comedy. His Italian accent (which many fans don't realize isn't Carelli's real voice) and the way he mispronounced the names of wrestlers like John Cena, Rey Mysterio, and Roddy Piper (who he called Rodney the Piper).

In the November 8, 2010 episode of "Raw", which was taped in Manchester, England, Santino Marella received a very warm welcome from the British fans. Marella and Vladimir Kozlov came out dressed in elegant clothes and made some light-hearted jokes about English culture. He then invited Sheamus to join his tea party and try to make amends but instead made it worse by making several hilarious jokes about Sheamus's appearance. Sheamus could barely contain his own laughter! Santino received a loud ovation from the crowd when the segment ended.
7. In the January 13, 2020 episode of "Raw", R-Truth was part of a very funny segment with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman. Truth spoke about how he would eliminate Heyman from a match, before realizing that Heyman would not be competing. Which Pay Per View was R-Truth talking about in this segment?

Answer: Royal Rumble

R-Truth's real name is Ronnie Aaron Killings and he was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1972. He started his wrestling career in 1997 and briefly worked in the WWF between 1999 and 2002, a time when he won the WWF Hardcore Championship. Killings then spent much of the 2000s decade working for TNA, and then returned to WWE in 2008. His character has become a fan favorite, in part because of his musical performances and humorous segments. R-Truth has paired up with several other wrestlers, such as The Miz, Goldust, and Kofi Kingston.

On January 13, 2020, then-WWE champion Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman were addressing the crowd when they were interrupted by R-Truth. Heyman was talking about how hard it would be to defeat his client, Lesnar in the Royal Rumble match. In the middle of the segment, R-Truth's interrupted and seemed to think Heyman was the favorite to win the Royal Rumble match, instead of Lesnar. Truth also warned that Heyman would be flying over the top rope, since competitors are eliminated from the Royal Rumble match when they are thrown over the top rope and both their feet hit the ground.

He also called himself the "24/7, 48/7, 7/11, I-95 South, Lexington, Kentucky European TV Champion", in reference to the title belt he was currently holding (the 24/7 Championship, which could change hands at any time as long as a WWE referee was present). Lesnar was visibly breaking into laughter throughout the entire segment, and Paul Heyman later revealed that Lesnar didn't know Truth was going to come out. Truth had the mission of making Lesnar laugh, and apparently, he succeeded.
8. CM Punk established himself as an iconic figure in modern WWE through his many accomplishments and title wins. He was also known for his witty and sarcastic humor, which earned him popularity with fans. In a 2011 episode of "Raw", CM Punk delivered a speech that shocked many WWE fans. By what name is this speech commonly known?

Answer: Pipe Bomb

Phillip Brooks was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1978. He wrestled for promotions like IWA Mid-South and ROH before joining WWE in 2005. He was in ECW for a while and won the ECW Championship at one point. His career really took off in 2008, when he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract in "Raw" and took the World Heavyweight Championship from Edge. Since then, he had several other championship reigns and memorable feuds with Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, John Cena, and Triple H. He left WWE in 2014 and was quite outspoken against the company and its management. After a few years doing mixed martial arts, Punk returned to professional wrestling when he joined AEW in 2021.

In the June 27, 2011 episode of "Raw" CM Punk interrupted a match between John Cena and R-Truth, eventually costing Cena the match. In a moment that became an iconic one in professional wrestling known as "the Pipe Bomb", Punk sat down on the arena's entrance ramp and delivered an incredible speech. He made scathing comments about John Cena, the McMahon family, Triple H, and the fans. When Punk was about to tell a "personal story" about Vince McMahon, his microphone was turned off. There has been speculation over how scripted the moment was, but Punk clearly had creative control over what he said.
9. In the October 12, 2015 episode of "Raw", the stable formed by Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods interrupted Randy Orton and Dean Ambrose and made several jokes at their expense, including one about how many groups Orton has been in. What is the name of this three-man team that preached about the "power of positivity"?

Answer: The New Day

The New Day was established in 2014 when Xavier Woods joined the tag team of Big E and Kofi Kingston. They started wearing blue clothes and were given a gospel gimmick that didn't last very long. However, they transformed into heels that would incessantly promote "the power of positivity" while wearing very colorful outfits and bringing to the ring items like a saxophone. They soon became fan favorites and have held various tag team championships on several occasions.

Randy Orton and Dean Ambrose were in the middle of a discussion on "Raw" when The New Day's loud music interrupted them. The three members came out and started making several jokes about their recent victories. Towards the end of the segment, The New Day joked about how they had accomplished more than Ambrose and Orton in the tag team division. They mentioned names of some stables Orton has been a part of, like Evolution, Legacy, and the Authority. Xavier Woods then intervened with: "Damn Randy! How many groups have you been in?", causing Orton to start laughing and uncharacteristically break character.
10. This clown persona has appeared on WWE television since 1993 and has been portrayed by several different wrestlers. Which mischievous character, fond of pranks, was famously played by Matt Borne?

Answer: Doink the Clown

The character of Doink the Clown originated in 1992 when a still unnamed clown started pranking children in the WWF crowd. Matt Borne, the original Doink the Clown, was a wrestling veteran at this time. He had already been a part of major promotions like NWA, WWF, WCWW, and WCW. Doink started pranking the wrestlers themselves, such as Big Boss Man and Marty Jannetty, and appeared in several important events like "WrestleMania IX". Over time, Doink the Clown's character evolved into a jobber, and was played by different wrestlers following Matt Borne's firing for drug abuse (Matt Osborne, the man behind the wrestler, passed away of a drug overdose in 2013). Doink has occasionally appeared in modern WWE television, including in a battle royal held at a special 15th-anniversary edition of "Raw" where Borne himself played the clown.
