Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On January 11, 1993, the first ever telecast of "Monday Night Raw" was broadcast from The Manhattan Center. What was the main event?

Answer: The Undertaker vs. Damian Demento

In its early days "Raw" was broadcast from The Manhattan Center in New York City and only aired for a single hour. The main event of the very first "Raw" ever saw The Undertaker battle the bizarre Damian Demento. Demento had made his debut for The WWF in October 1992 and played the persona of a man with severe psychological issues.

He did not stick around too long but I will give him one thing he had a cool hometown. When the announcer says the weight and where the wrestler is billed as being from; Demento was from "The Outer reaches of your Mind".
2. On January 24, 1993, the WWF presented "The Royal Rumble" and the card saw the final pay per view appearance of The Big Boss Man for almost six years. Ironically his opponent was making his return after a four and half year absence. Who was he?

Answer: Bam Bam Bigelow

The Boss Man made his exit from the WWF shortly after this bout, he would return to the company in October 1998 as Mr. McMahon's head of security. He died in 2004 after suffering a massive coronary at the age of 42. Bigelow had a prior stint with the WWF from 1987 thru 1988 which could be described as disappointing.

He was given a major push and routinely beat mid carders like Nikolai Volkoff or Hercules Hernandez but often jobbed to stars like One Man Gang, Ted Dibiase and Andre the Giant. This time he had more success and stayed around for almost three years before heading to ECW. Bam Bam is also gone as he died in 2007 at age 45 from a drug overdose.
3. During this time period "Thrasher" of the "The Headbangers" a team which would be very popular during "The Attitude Era" began wrestling as a jobber on weekly telecasts and early "Raw" shows. What was his name?

Answer: Glen Ruth

Glen Ruth would wrestle as a jobber in the WWF for quite sometime before finally catching his big break with Mosh as "The Headbangers" in 1997. The duo was very popular with fans during 1997 and 1998 and even enjoyed a very brief reign as WWF Tag Team Champions.
4. In 1993 Lex Luger made his long awaited WWF debut and his first gimmick was that of a snobbish, self absorbed heel who carried a full length mirror everywhere with him. What was his nickname?

Answer: "The Narcissist" Lex Luger

From January thru June 1993 Larry Pfohl portrayed the role of "The Narcissist" Lex Luger and feuded with Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect. In July 1993 Luger made an unexpected face turn when he bodyslammed the WWF Heavyweight Champion Yokozuna on the deck of the U.S.S. Intrepid. He was then given a monster face push but for whatever reason never did win the WWF Heavyweight Title.
5. In the fall of 1993 the twenty-one month undefeated streak of Native American Tatanka came to a halt in a televised match. What star handed him his first pin fall loss?

Answer: Ludvig Borga

Tony Halme aka Ludvig Borga made his WWF debut during the summer of 1993 and by the fall was feuding with the popular Tatanka. In a televised match in October 1993 he struck Tatanka with a steel chair, unbeknownst to the referee, and pinned him thus ending his undefeated streak. Halme was actually considered to defeat Razor Ramon for the WWF Intercontinental Title at one point but the angle was scrapped. Halme had a sour disposition and was a notoriously stiff worker which lead to his termination in March 1994. Later he returned to his native Finland where he became active in politics, he committed suicide in January 2010 at age 47.
6. In October 1993 Razor Ramon won the coveted WWF Intercontinental Title for the first time. The title was vacant at the time and the match was between Razor and a cagey WWF veteran. Who was his opponent?

Answer: Rick "The Model" Martel

The Intercontinental Title had been vacated by Shawn Michaels in September 1993 and on a segment of "Raw" a special Battle Royal was held in which the final two combatants would get to wrestle for the belt. In the end it came down to Razor and the veteran Martel and the following week on "Raw" they clashed with Ramon winning.
7. When Crush attacked Randy Savage in the fall of 1993 thus signaling a heel turn he took on a manager. Who did Crush hire to be his manager?

Answer: Mr.Fuji

Believe it or not the legendary Mr. Fuji was still active as a manager in the WWF until failing health caused him to retire in 1996. While no longer sporting his trademark tuxedo and derby Fuji had probably his best success during this era as he not only handled Crush but the late Yokozuna who held the WWF Heavyweight Title twice, once for over nine months.
8. In the spring of 1994 infamous WWF heel Ted Dibiase made his return, this time however back problems forced him to become a manager. Ted quickly established "The Million Dollar Corporation" and its very first member was a legendary 1980's heel who had fallen on rough times. Who was this star?

Answer: Nikolai Volkoff

Apparently the burly Russian had made some bad investments and in exchange for some basic needs for him and his family he literally sold himself to the vile Dibiase. Volkoff was forced to wear black trunks with the words "Property of The Million Dollar Man" on the posterior. You know things were getting bad in wrestling as Volkoff was pushing 50 here and quite frankly looked it.
9. On August 29, 1994, Razor Ramon defeated Diesel at "Summerslam '94" to regain the WWF Intercontinental Title. Which legendary star of the NFL was in Razor's corner on this historic night?

Answer: Walter Payton

The legendary running back for The Chicago Bears Walter Payton accompanied "The Bad Guy" for his Intercontinental Title match against rival Diesel aka Kevin Nash. Not only does Professional Wrestling have its share of tragedies, the NFL, has had its share as well. Payton died in November 1999 from a rare cancer at the age of 45. Another great one gone too soon.
10. Almost immediately after losing the WWF Tag Team Titles to Shawn Michaels and Kevin Nash, The Headshrinkers had a lineup change. Gone was Samu and Fatu was paired with Sione as the New Headshrinkers. In reality Sione was a star who had previously competed in the WWF in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Who was Sione?

Answer: The Barbarian

Sione Vailahi using his birth name returned to the WWF after a couple of years in WCW and joined The Headshrinkers. Despite his experience and considerable ability this version of the team was much less successful than the original. By early 1995 Sione would be back in WCW and Fatu was repackaged.
11. In the fall of 1994 this notorious heel of the mid 1980s returned to the WWF as a member of "The Million Dollar Corporation". Even though he was gone for over six and a half years he proved he was as ruthless as ever. Who was this star?

Answer: King Kong Bundy

The gargantuan King Kong Bundy made a triumphant return in September 1994 as one of the stars of Ted Dibiase's stable. Bundy stuck around for almost a year and feuded with The British Bulldog, Lex Luger and The Undertaker.
12. Although there were some genuine great matches during this time, the era was characterized by bad, bad gimmicks. One such gimmick was Kwang The Ninja who appeared during 1994 and early 1995. In the spring of 1995 he was repackaged as a face and got a big time push. Who did he become?

Answer: Savio Vega

In the spring of 1995 Kwang The Ninja took on the persona of Savio Vega who was introduced as an old running buddy of Razor Ramon. Despite his limited skills he was popular with crowds and would be a persistent Intercontinental Title challenger for the next two years. In 1997 Vega was given his own faction called "Los Boricuas" before his departure in the fall of 1998.
13. On April 2, 1995, the WWF presented "Wrestlemania XI" and one of the featured contests was a submission match between Bret Hart and Bob Backlund. A special guest referee was assigned to the match who was a megastar in the 1980s and early 1990s. Who was the guest referee?

Answer: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper

The incomparable "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was the special guest referee for the special submission match between Bret Hart and Bob Backlund. This actually was the second year in a row that Piper had officiated at "Wrestlemania" and specifically for a Bret Hart match. At "Wrestlemania X" he refereed the WWF Heavyweight Title match between Bret and Yokozuna which saw Hart regain the belt.
14. In the fall of 1995 Shawn Michaels was given some time off to heal from a few nagging injuries. An angle was staged where a heel supposedly injured Michaels and forced him out of competition for a few months. Who was this wrestler?

Answer: Owen Hart

In October 1995, Owen Hart wrestled Shawn Michaels on a segment of "Monday Night Raw". Hart used one of his trademark enzuigiri kicks to the back of head to cause a severe concussion to Shawn. In reality Shawn had been injured in an altercation outside The WWF but the angle allowed him to heal and also built on Owen's heel reputation.
15. Another flash in the pan, bad gimmick star was the infamous Waylon Mercy who made his debut in the summer of 1995. Actually Mercy was a repackaged 1980s mid card jobber who had returned after nearly seven years. Who was Waylon Mercy back in the day?

Answer: Dan Spivey

The character of Waylon Mercy drew strongly from Robert DeNiro's portrayal of Max Cady in the 1991 remake of "Cape Fear". Mercy was given a very strong heel push and big things were planned for him however several nagging injuries forced him to retire in November 1995.
