"Pinocchio" is based on the Italian children's novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. The movie is named after the main character who is a little wooden puppet created by a wood-carver named Geppetto. The little puppet's only wish is to someday become a real boy.

The story follows his adventures as he sets off on this quest. The tale also served as a morality lesson for little children through Pinocchio's unique feature of having his nose grow long whenever he tells a lie.
