quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete this line from the song featured in "The Little Mermaid": "The bass play the ______, the chub play the tub, the fluke is the duke of soul...".

Answer: Brass

This line comes from the song "Under the Sea". It was written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken in 1989. The song was considered so good that it even won an Oscar!
2. Now, here's a line from "Beauty and the Beast": "...life is so unnerving, for a servant who's not serving, he's not _____ without a soul to wait upon..." which of these words fit in?

Answer: whole

This line that comes from the song "Be our Guest" was also written by the fabulous couple Ashman & Menken in 1991. The film made history as the first and only animated feature ever nominated for Best Picture and it earned two Academy Awards.
3. Next up is "The Jungle Book": Can you remember which word fits in the blank? "...clue me what to do, give me the power of man's red _____ so I can be like you..."

Answer: flower

The line is from the song "I Wanna Be Like You" by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman who wrote it in 1967. "I made a deal with you/What I desire is man's red fire/To make my dream come true" is a line in the same verse that comes just before the line in the question. "The Jungle Book" was a very special film for Walt Disney but unfortunately he didn't live to see its success- he died on December 15, a few months before it was released to the theaters.
4. What do you say about this line from "Aladdin": "...he faced the galloping hordes, a hundred ____ guys with swords...". Which of the four fits in the best?

Answer: bad

And again the above song "Prince Ali" was written by Ashman and Menken, this time in 1992. However, not all of the songs in "Aladdin" were written by Howard Ashman. That is because Howard died during the making of the film. In order to replace him, Disney brought the British writer Tim Rice to finish the rest of the songs including "A Whole New World" and "One Jump Ahead".
5. And now, we move on to the classic "Mary Poppins": "...Feed the birds, that's what she ____,while overhead her birds fill the skies..." which word did the talented Julie Andrews sing here?

Answer: cries

"Feed the Birds", that's the song the line comes from. It was written by the Shermans and was published in 1964. The film had a marvelous number of 13 nominations to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and it won 5 Oscars. :)
6. Here's a line from one of my personal favorite movies "The Lion King": "...but we're talking kings and ________, even you can't be caught unaware...". you know the drill, choose the word that fits in...

Answer: succession

This line comes from the less appreciated but beautiful song "Be Prepared". It was written by Elton John and Tim Rice. Before they started working on this film, the producers at Disney asked Tim to choose the composer he wanted to work with and he answered- "I think Elton John will do".

At first they were shocked, after all he was a rock star, but they soon found out how talented he was, and the outcome was magnificent.
7. This time I took off the first word of the song from the lovely film "Cinderella": "_________ menchicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo, Put 'em together and what have you got bippity-boppity-boo..." We don't want to leave the beginning empty do we?

Answer: Salagadoola

The song is called "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" and I'm sorry to say that I don't know who created what- all I know is that J. Livington, M. David, and A. Hoffman, worked on this project together in 1950. It took several years to produce "Cinderella", but the time and money spent were worth it, as the film was a big success.
8. Oh, here comes another classic film, as we reach "Pinocchio": "Hi-diddle-dee-dee, an actor's life for me, a high silk ___ and a silver cane, a watch of gold with a diamond chain..." Fill in the blank! :)

Answer: Hat

"Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" was written by Washington and Harline in 1940. The film cost twice than intended and the Disney studio was in a bad financial state. However, they managed to make it through WW2 with a lot of humorous cartoons about the war.
9. Jumping from the 1940's to the 1990's with "Pocahontas", I need a little change. So, this time I want you to tell me if these are the correct words: "What I love most about rivers is you can't step in the same river once, the water's always changing, always flowing..."

Answer: No

It's supposed to be- "...step in the same river TWICE..." from the song "Just Around The Riverbend" composed by A. Menken (he worked a lot with Disney...) and written by S. Schwartz in 1995.
"Pocahontas" also made history as the first Disney animated feature to be based on historical fact.
10. Let's go back to the 50's with "Alice in Wonderland" : "The time has come my little friends, To talk of other things, Of shoes and ships and ______ wax, and cabbages and kings, And why the sea is boiling hot, and wheather pigs have wings..." What kind of wax?

Answer: sealing

This is my favorite line in "Cabbages And Kings". It was written by Hilliars & Fain back in 1951. The film was based on a book written by Lewis Carroll. But, although the book was and still is a huge success, the animated feature was not. Walt Disney himself claimed that "Alice" had no "heart".
11. And now, the historical "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves": "...and as you sweep the room imagine that the broom is someone that you love and soon you'll find you're dancing to the tune..." Are these the correct lyrics?

Answer: Yes

"Whistle While You Work" is the name of the song. It was written by Morey and Churchill way back in 1937.
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" was the first full length (83 minutes) animated film. At the premier Walt Disney aproached the microphone to make a speach. He was so excited that he could not remember the names of the seven dwarves- "Doc" (voice of Roy Atwell), "Happy" (voice of Otis Harlan), "Bashful" (voice of Scotty Mattraw), "Sneezy" (voice of Billy Gilbert), "Sleepy" (voice of Pinto Colvig), "Grumpy" (voice of Pinto Colvig) and "Dopey" (mute).
12. A true dog love in "Lady and the Tramp" because- "...he's a tramp they ____ him and I only hope he'll stay that way..." what to "they" do to him?

Answer: adore

We're in the 50's again with "He's A Tramp". Burke and Lee wrote it together back in 1955.
Not many know that this film, like many other Disney films, was based on a tale. This particular one was based on "Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog" by Ward Greene.
13. Now, this is one of the more famous Disney films- "Pete's Dragon": "...I'll be your candle on the water, 'till every wave is ____ and bright..."

Answer: warm

To be honest, I have never seen the movie. I came across the song for the first time when I bought a Disney's songs collection. However it is a beautiful song called "Candle on the Water", And it was written by A. Kashal and J. Hirschoborn in 1977.
14. Only two more questions to go! This one is about "Bambi". So, here is a statement- is it true or false? This is the correct line from the song- "Drip, drop, drip, little April shower..."

Answer: False

"Drip, drip, drop, little April shower..."- now those are the correct lyrics from the song "Little April Shower" written by Morey & Churchill.
"Bambi" was produced in 1942 and was the last movie for the next 8 years because of the war (WW2, that is...).
15. Well this is the end folks, we'll finish with "Toy Story" : "...some other folks might, be a little bit smarter than I am, bigger and ______ too. Maybe, but none of them will ever love you, the way I do it's me and you, boy if we stick together we can see it through..."

Answer: stronger

This line is from the theme song " You've Got a Friend in Me" it was solely written by R. Newman in 1995.
"Toy Story" was the first fully computer-generated animated feature.
The film's producer, John Lasseter, was honored by the Academy with a special Achievement Oscar for the development.

For my "Grande Finale" I would like to quote Walt Disney and say- "I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing- that it was all started by a mouse". So thank you for playing!
P.S.- a lot of the interesting information in the quiz was inspired by the book "Disney The First 100 Years" by Dave Smith and Steven Clark.
