Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is this hungry-looking creature whose name actually means 'river horse'?

Answer: Hippopotamus

The hippopotamus may be called 'river horse' but he doesn't look much like a horse, does he? Good luck to any jockey that tries riding him!
He actually looks like a seriously overgrown pig but his nearest relative is really the whale.
2. Hey, buddy, what's that growing out of your head? Who is this guy carrying around half a tree?

Answer: Moose

He is a moose (no, not the chocolate type you find in your fridge, that's a mousse). Male moose are easily recognizable because of their palmate antlers - these are leaf-shaped, whereas most other species of deer have antlers that are dendritic (shaped more like branches or large twigs).
3. This guy sure looks cuddly, but he is in fact one of the world's most dangerous creatures. Who is this, taking a dip?

Answer: Polar bear

Did you know that a polar bear's skin is really black? It appears white because of its thick fur. Polar bears eat just about anything -- but they rarely (if ever) get penguin for dinner because they live at opposite ends of the planet.
4. Like people, some animals always seem to walk around with their head in the clouds. Who is this that always looks down on everyone else?

Answer: Giraffe

The giraffe was originally called a "Camelopard", apparently because those who first saw them thought they looked like either tall camels or large leopards. Get those guys glasses!
Of course, you cannot tell from this photograph that the giraffe is the world's tallest animal, so you'll just have to trust me that it's true.
5. This animal has a very human-sounding family with nannies, lots of kids and even someone called Billy, apparently. Who is this?

Answer: Goat

Closely related to the sheep, the goat is one of the oldest domesticated animals. You can get milk (and subsequently cheese) from goats, and in some parts of the world, goat meat is as common as steak or chicken is to those of us in the West.
6. You probably weren't even born in 1982, but perhaps you've seen the film "Rocky III" which featured a memorable song called "Eye of the ______" Which animal?

Answer: Tiger

The song was "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. The largest species of cat in the world, the tiger features on numerous flags and it is the national animal of Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Malaysia and South Korea. The Detroit Tigers play Major League Baseball in America, whilst the Cincinnati Bengals play football in the NFL.
7. Wouldn't you hate to be this guy's kid when you'd done something wrong? I mean, give us a smile, mate. Who is this big guy who really looks annoyed about something?

Answer: Gorilla

The ape is one of our closest living cousins -- humans and apes have a common ancestor. Millions of years ago, this is probably not that different from what our forebears looked like. The gorilla is today the largest surviving primate on the planet. So much for those diets you hear so much about -- he got that big eating just leaves, stems, pith, shoots and some occasional fruit!
8. Who is this animal that can go for ages without water, and yet they call him the 'ship of the desert'?

Answer: Camel

Yes, this is the 'ship' that rarely gets anywhere near the sea. If you could see his back, you would find one or two humps there. Apparently, though, they are not just there to help the riders avoid falling off.
9. This guy's stripes might provide a clue as to his identity. Who is this that is decked out like a serious Newcastle United fan?

Answer: Zebra

You're right, it can't be an orangutan as they all support Holland or the Denver Broncos. The zebra is a member of the horse family but every individual has unique stripes, similar to a human's fingerprints.
10. Who is this chap who is, apparently, unable to change his spots?

Answer: Leopard

Although the old proverb maintains that a leopard cannot change his spots, a leopard actually has 'rosettes' whereas a cheetah has genuine spots. Leopards are not fighters like some of the larger cats such as lions, and they are capable of dragging prey weighing significantly more than they do up into the high branches of trees.
