Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I tried to hide amongst some leaves and sticks and use my natural colours to blend in. SSSSSssssss...then she found me. What type of animal am I?

Answer: Snake

Snakes have no legs so they use their bodies to slither along the ground. Julie can probably find snakes right in her own backyard; they're one reptile that can be found all over the world (except in the Arctic). Their scaly skin is usually coloured to let them camouflage in their surroundings, but in some parts of the world there are really colourful ones.
2. Hopping through the Arctic Circle, I tried to nestle myself into the snow...then she found me. What animal am I?

Answer: Arctic hare

Julie would need to travel up north to spot one of these critters. A speedy rabbit relative, the arctic hare makes its home in the Arctic and uses its white fur to blend into the snow for camouflage. Regular hares and rabbits in warmer climates can be brown, grey, and other natural colours so that they can also blend into their woodland homes.
3. I wanted to change my colours on the fly to make sure I wasn't caught in my tree...then she found me. What lizard could I be?

Answer: Chameleon

The chameleon is a lizard that was originally from Africa though it can now be found in several tropical forests around the world. Chameleons have the ability to change the colours of their skin at any time to look similar to their surroundings and hide from prey. Chameleons are also known for having long tongues and bulbous eyes that can look all around their bodies.
4. Okay- I tried to hide from Julie under this cupboard, but I got stuck...then she found me. No clawing my way out of this one. What kind of animal would I be?

Answer: Cat

Although many house cats can't leave their homes (and though they can be hard to find even in a single room) many cats can adapt quite easily to outside surroundings by blending in with certain colours or hiding in shadowy places. Although orange cats may have a harder time finding a place to camouflage, brown and grey cats can easily hide in forests or autumn leaves without being seen.

Some cats, however, don't make a point of trying to hide at all...as we can see.
5. It would've been easier if I were still a tadpole, but I tried to make do using my colours...then she found me anyways. What animal did Julie just find?

Answer: Frog

Frogs are amphibians (meaning they were born in water then grew to breathe air) with the distinct ability to blend into their environments quite easily. Like toads, it's quite difficult to determine where frogs and toads can be, even in a small tank. Both can be found in most parts of the world (excluding the Arctic regions and really hot deserts like the Sahara).

While some frogs can hide from prey, some are vibrantly coloured. These frogs, however, are usually very poisonous and fight their foes with deadly toxins.
6. Well, we knew we were going to get caught. We made a wrong turn around that hedge and then she found us. Let's just migrate or something. What are we?

Answer: Geese

The two geese are actually Canada geese, a bird known for moving in large amounts beginning in Canada in the summer, heading to the warmer parts of the United States in the winter, and then migrating back north in the spring. These geese are often caught by hunters, but they do have the ability to camouflage in tall grass and woodlands. Because of their long, black necks and heads they can blend in with some plants.

The two geese in the picture simply made a dumb move; Julie found them pretty quickly.
7. I just minded my own business when all of a sudden I heard a boat coming through the reeds...then she found me. What large reptile am I?

Answer: Alligator

The alligator can be found in North America and Asia, but Julie would be a fool not to approach with caution. Usually found in swampy places, alligators are known for lurking underwater. In the United States, people can find alligators in the Florida Everglades and in the swamps of Louisiana. Alligators are very similar to crocodiles (which live in more parts of the world) but their noses, jaws, and colours are slightly different.
8. While I'm a colourful insect, I'm quite good at hiding. I tried to hide in my surroundings, then she found me and I flew away. What am I?

Answer: Butterfly

Butterflies are beautiful specimens of the insect world. Known for interesting colour patterns on their wings, butterflies can either have vibrant colours to blend in with pretty flowers or they can have more natural colours to match forests, trees, and leaves.

Although many people collect butterflies, many buildings also house them to preserve them and spread pollen in plants. This particular butterfly looks like a leaf.
9. I didn't really feel like hiding, so I just stood here- then she found me. If I wanted to, I could've gone up in a tree, but I didn't want to. What am I?

Answer: Bear

This brown bear seems to be quite curious. Most brown bears are found in woodlands and forests, so their brown colour helps them hide in wooded areas. One of the earliest things taught to bear cubs by their mothers is the ability to climb, so if attackers were to pursue a baby bear, this would be a possibility.

Other bears around the world, like polar bears make use of their surroundings to hide; a polar bear's white fur is perfect to hide in snow.
10. ...then she found me. I don't know what I was thinking- Julie's not a lion. Of course she can see me. What animal am I?

Answer: Zebra

Julie would have to go to Africa to find a zebra in the wild, otherwise she'd have to spot one in a zoo. The zebra is known for its black and white stripes which some believe helps them hide (if you can believe it) from lions. Since lions can't see in colour, zebras can blend in with tall grass to hide from the king of the jungle and escape if need be.
