Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does AYSO stand for?

Answer: American Youth Soccer Organization

While it started and was mainly in the United States, it has in recent years been expanded to include regions in Moscow, the Virgin Islands and Trinidad & Tobago.
2. Where was AYSO established in 1964?

Answer: Los Angeles

It started out with 9 teams in the LA area. 40+ years later, there were 50,000 teams and over 650,000 players. Girls teams were added in 1971.
3. Which of the following is not one of AYSO's five basic philosophies?

Answer: Have Fun

While AYSO hopes everyone has fun, it isn't required. The other 2 philosohies not listed are Balanced Teams and Positive Coaching.
4. While coaching positions are volunteer, local AYSO board members are paid.

Answer: False

Everyone in the AYSO organization, except about 50 positions at the national headquarters, is volunteer. This includes coaches, referees, registrars, coordinators, and regional commissioners.
5. Under what age does AYSO recommend playing short-sided games (less than 11 players on the field)?

Answer: 12

This gives more play or "ball" time, and gets young players engaged in the early years. Concepts are gradually introduced beginning in U5 and are added to, along with the number of players, in each division progression.
6. What does U8 stand for?

Answer: Under 8

Most people think U8 stands for 8-year olds when actually it is the division for 6 and 7 year olds. 8-year olds play in the U10, or Under 10 division.
7. When AYSO began, what made it unique to other youth organized sports?

Answer: It required balanced teams and it required all players, regardless of ability, to play at least ½ the game

Each year teams are broken apart and all new teams are built based on spreading the talent across all the teams. This keeps one powerhouse from building and dominating several years (possibly spanning an entire experience of another child). AYSO also requires all players to play at least 1/2 the game.
8. In what division are goalies introduced?

Answer: U10

Not having goalies encourages the younger player in the game of soccer and let's them first concentrate on controlling the ball. Instead of a boring game where maybe 1 or 2 points are scored, it gives more opportunities for all players to score. And surprisingly, the games aren't huge scores like 30-28.

It's amazing how often an open goal is missed by young players, resulting in common scores of 4-7 points.
9. How many players are on the field per team for an U6 game?

Answer: 3

Adding anymore players at that age will only increase the one large human mass that surrounds the ball. While passing is covered and encouraged in U6, they just don't seem to do much of it at this age.
10. In what division is offense and defense introduced?

Answer: U8

U8, with 5 players on the field, introduces an offense of 3 players and a defense (non-goalie) of 2 players. Players are introduced to staying at least in their half of the field. U5 gets them just going the right direction on the field. U6 introduces ball handling and passing. U10 introduces goalies and the concept of offsides. U12 introduces zones and enforces offsides. U14 introduces full teams and all soccer rules and concepts.
