Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of the following is not a position in football?

Answer: Doubleback

The fullback is a runningback that usually blocks for the halfback. The halfback usually runs most of the running plays. The quarterback is the one that passes the ball to the receivers and is sort of the leader of the offense.
2. Which one of these numbers would be LEAST likely to be worn by a runningback in the NFL?

Answer: 12

The NFL has a specific numbering system where certain positions wear certain numbers. Halfbacks and fullbacks wear numbers 20-49. The number 12 would be worn by a quarterback, kicker, punter, or wide receiver.
3. Which one of these is NOT a defensive position?

Answer: Center

The center is the player that snaps (gives) the ball to the quarterback. The center is a part of the offensive line that is in charge of blocking for the quarterback or runningback. The cornerback usually defends against the wide receiver. The linebacker usually tackles in behind the defensive line or tries to get a sack (tackle the quarterback while he still has the ball).

The safety usually waits in the back and defends against the deepest man.
4. What is it called when players rush at the quarterback and try to pressure him?

Answer: Blitz

A blitz is when a player or multiple players rush at the quarterback and either pressure him while passing or try to sack him. Blitz can be succesful if there is poor blocking on the offense but, they can also be unsuccessful because there is one less player covering (defending a player to make sure they don't catch the ball) a receiver.
5. What is it called when a player drops the ball? (Usually it's an offensive player and sometimes the defensive player comes and picks it up.)

Answer: Fumble

When a defensive player picks up the fumbled ball, that it called a fumble recovery. An interception is when a defensive player catches the ball while it's being thrown toward the receiver. A sack is when a defensive player tackle the quarterback while he has the ball in his hand.
6. What are the two conferences in the NFL?

Answer: AFC and NFC

The AFC is the American Football Conference and the NFC is the National Football Conference. Both of them actually used to be separate leagues (NFL and AFL) until the merger. Each conference has 16 teams. At the end of the season, both conference have their own separate playoffs. After the playoffs, the champions of each division play each other in the Super Bowl.
7. How many points would you have if you made two touchdowns, missed one extra point, made three field goals, and a safety?

Answer: 24

A touchdown is worth 6 points and the point after is worth 1. So if you had 2 touchdowns, that would be 12 points and you get only one point after, so that's 13 points. A field goal is worth 3 points, so three would be nine points. A safety is worth 2 points. If you add all that together, it will become 24 points. 13+9+2=24.
8. Which one of these teams has NEVER been an NFL team?

Answer: Minneapolis Lakers

The Minneapolis Lakers were a basketball team. The Rams were once a team that has now moved on to St Louis. The Oilers were once a team that moved to Tennessee as the Tennessee Oilers and then changed their name and became the Tennessee Titans. The Packers are still playing today in the same town of Green Bay.
9. What is name of the trophy that the Super Bowl winners receive?

Answer: Lombardi Trophy

The Lombardi trophy is named after the former coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi. The winners of the Super Bowl get to hold up the cup and the players and coaches also get a ring for winning the Super Bowl.
10. Which hall of fame quarterback led the Denver Broncos to five Super Bowls and won two of them?

Answer: John Elway

John Elway led the Broncos to Super Bowl XXI in 1987 against the Giants, Super Bowl XXII against the Redskins, and Super Bowl XXIV against the 49ers, which they lost. The Broncos won Super Bowls XXXII in 1998 and XXXIII in 1999 against the Packers and Falcons with Elway though. He was MVP of Super Bowl XXXIII and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
