Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fill in the blanks as you go through this quiz. Pay special attention to how lines rhyme and what words will fit with the rhythm of the story. "All the long way to school And all the way back I've looked and I've looked And I've kept careful track But all that I've noticed Except my own ____ Was a horse and a wagon On Mulberry Street."

Answer: Feet

"And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" was Dr. Seuss' first book. It was published in 1937.
2. "That can't be my story. That's only a start. I'll say that a _____ was pulling that cart! And that is a story that no one can beat, When I say that I saw it on Mulberry Street."

Answer: Zebra

"And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" was rejected by dozens of publishers. Some said it would not be popular because it rhymed, others because it had too much make-believe. Eventually, Dr. Seuss found a publisher who liked his book, and it was a great success.
3. "The story would really be better to hear If the driver I saw were a charioteer. A gold and blue chariot's something to meet, Rumbling like _______ down Mulberry Street!"

Answer: Thunder

Dr. Seuss' real name was Theodore Geisel. He got the idea for this first book while crossing the Atlantic on a steamship. The steady rhythm of the ship's engines inspired him to write words that kept time with their strokes. Can you imagine the lines above set to the "chug-chug-CHUG-chug-chug-CHUG-chug-chug-CHUG-chug-chug-CHUG" of a really big engine?
4. "But it isn't too late to make one little change. A sleigh and an _______! There's something strange! I'll pick one with plenty of power and size, A blue one with plenty of fun in his eyes. And then, just to give him a little more tone, Have a Rajah, with rubies, perched high on a throne."

Answer: Elephant

A Rajah is a nobleman of India, similar to the princes and knights of Europe. Though you may think of an elephant as an African animal, they are also elephants in India, where they were used to carry royalty and other wealthy people for centuries just as horses were used in Europe.
5. "But now, I don't know... It still doesn't seem right. An elephant pulling a thing that's so light Would whip it around in the air like a ____."

Answer: Kite

As Dr. Seuss continues, "But he'd look simply grand/With a great big brass band!" This story is really growing larger all the time!
6. "But now what worries me is this Mulberry Street runs into Bliss, Unless there's something I can fix up, There'll be an awful traffic mix-up! It takes ______ to do the trick, To guide them through where traffic's thick."

Answer: Police

A note to the grown-ups: Dr. Seuss changes meter several times during "Mulberry Street". He would avoid doing this in his future work, making great books like "The Lorax" and "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" much easier for kids (and their parents) to read and remember.
7. "The _____ is there And he thinks it is grand, And he raised his hat As they dash by the stand."

Answer: Mayor

In this case, "the stand" refers to a place where important leaders would sit to watch a parade and be seen by the people they served. Isn't it amazing how the storyteller's imagination has turned a horse and wagon into a grand parade?
8. "With a roar of its motor an ________ appears And dumps out confetti while everyone cheers."

Answer: Airplane

Dr. Seuss would go on to write 46 books for children, most of which have become standard reading for all of us growing up.
9. "But Dad said quite calmly, 'Just draw up your stool And tell me the sights On your way home from ______.'"

Answer: School

Awards won by Dr. Seuss during his career included a special Pulitzer Prize and three Caldecott medals, as well as two Emmys and a Peabody Award for his television work.
10. "Nothing," I said, growing red as a ____, "But a plain horse and wagon on Mulberry Street."

Answer: Beet

Dr. Seuss passed away at his home in California on September 24, 1991. Thanks for the books, big guy.
