Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who hates Christmas?

Answer: the Grinch

The cantankerous Grinch hates the holidays--principally because of the Yuletide racket. Aiming to halt Christmas in its festive tracks, the potbellied, pink-eyed Seussian Scrooge impersonates Santa and confiscates every last Who-ville Christmas bauble and goody, from trees to tricycles to cans of Who-hash.
2. What does the Lorax try to save?

Answer: Truffula trees

When his beloved Truffula trees are hacked down to make Thneeds ("which everyone needs"--supposedly), the mustachioed little Lorax protests angrily.
3. Where does the Birthday Bird come from?

Answer: Katroo

The kindly Katroovian Bird bustles a birthday boy out of bed and conducts him on a long, glorious day of gift-getting, snacking, hot-tubbing, and partying.
4. What almost destroys the Kingdom of Didd?

Answer: oobleck

Super-gluey oobleck bombards the Kingdom of Didd after King Derwin commands his magicians to invent a new kind of weather. Despite the heroics of Bartholomew the pageboy, the kingdom is soon ooblecked to a sticky standstill.
5. There are Star-Belly _______ and Plain-Belly ones.

Answer: Sneetches

"When the Star-Belly Sneetches had frankfurter roasts or picnics or parties or marshmallow toasts, they never invited the Plain-Belly Sneetches...."
6. What is the mean eagle's name in "Horton Hears a Who"?

Answer: Vlad Vlad-i-koff

When huge Horton the elephant hears a minuscule yelp from a dust speck, he guesses it's an SOS from tiny beings.
7. In "I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew," what are the tiger-like critters called?

Answer: Perilous Poozers

In this book, the hero has more than his share of troubles. He's tripping over rocks, a savage Quilligan Quail keeps nipping his tail, a giant mosquito called a Skritz keeps dive-bombing him, and a ground-dwelling Skrink keeps chomping on his toe.
8. In "There's a Wocket in My Pocket," what is on the boy's pillow?

Answer: a ZILLOW

There's a ZOWER in his SHOWER, too. This is a lovely book for very little kids.
9. In "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" what creatures inhabit "a frightening creek"?

Answer: Hakken-Kraks

"But on you will go though the weather be foul. On you will go though your enemies prowl. On you will go though the Hakken-Kraks howl. Onward up many a frightening creek, though your arms may get sore and your sneakers may leak." I adore this book! (His last, sadly.)
10. Here's a freebie for Seuss nuts: What was Dr. Seuss's real name?

Answer: Theodor "Ted" Geisel

That's Theodor with no final "e." Seuss was his middle name and his mother's maiden name. He wasn't a real doctor but he was a good man and the best thing that happened to American children's books in the 1900s, in my opinion. Theodor Seuss Geisel, 1904-1991. Read his biography sometime--he had a fascinating life.
