Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who does Fern feed with a bottle before she catches the school bus?

Answer: Wilbur the baby pig

Fern feeds warm milk in a bottle to the baby pig she names Wilbur. (Babe the pig is in a different book.) The story begins in the spring, before school is out for the summer, and it takes us through the whole year, until the next spring, when Wilbur has grown up.
2. Who tells Wilbur, "One of the boards is loose. Push-push-push on it, and come on out!"?

Answer: The goose

The goose talks very fast and repeats words, which she later says is her "idio-idio-idiosyncrasy" (Chapter XII). Wilbur enjoys being free to play, but Mr. Zuckerman, Lurvey, and the cocker spaniel dog chase him. Wilbur walks back into the pen, because he likes to eat.
3. Templeton lives under Wilbur's feed trough. What kind of animal is Templeton?

Answer: rat

Templeton likes to eat even more than Wilbur does! The trough is Wilbur's food dish, so Templeton lives under it to be close to the food. In one part of the story, he hides a rotten egg, which breaks open when Fern's brother Avery trips over the trough, accidentally saving Charlotte's life.
4. One day, Wilbur can't convince any of the animals to play with him. That night, he hears a voice saying, "I'll be a friend to you. I've watched you all day and I like you." Who says this?

Answer: Charlotte A. Cavatica

"Araneus cavaticus" is the scientific name for Charlotte's spider family, and "Charlotte Cavatica" is her name. E.B. White changed the Latin name a bit to make it fit a girl spider.
5. How does Charlotte use her web to save Wilbur's life?

Answer: She uses it to write words praising Wilbur.

Wilbur thinks he can build a web, but he can't. Charlotte knows that some humans are "gullible" and will believe anything they read. She makes people believe that Wilbur is too unusual and important to be killed for food.
6. Charlotte tells stories about her cousin who could catch fish and another cousin who could fly in the air like a balloonist. Is it possible that these stories are true, or are they false?

Answer: true

There really are spiders that can catch fish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolomedes) and spiders that use gossamer (silk threads) to propel themselves through the air (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballooning_(spider)).
7. Who goes looking through the trash to find words for Charlotte to write in her web and eventually saves Charlotte's egg sac for Wilbur?

Answer: Templeton

Charlotte reminds Templeton the rat that if Wilbur dies, the trough will stand empty and the rat will no longer have an easy source of food. Templeton finds wrappers and scraps from magazines and newspapers with words on them. Wilbur later makes a deal with Templeton that if he will save the egg sac, Templeton can eat from Wilbur's trough first, every meal Wilbur is fed.
8. Charlotte's last word for Wilbur means "not proud" and also means "near the ground"; so Charlotte says it is a perfect description of him. What is this word?

Answer: Humble

Wilbur has been called "Some Pig" and "Terrific" and "Radiant" to fool the gullible people into saving his life, but the word "Humble" tells the truth about him. He is given a medal (and gets to live) because the words in Charlotte's web have attracted so many visitors to the fair and people think he is a miracle.
9. When Wilbur faints at the awards ceremony at the fair, what brings him to?

Answer: Templeton bites his tail.

Templeton is a nasty character who complains about helping, but he helps anyway. Biting Wilbur's tail is Templeton's own idea. He does it to wake Wilbur up, but I think he does it because he enjoys biting, too.
10. Who are Joy, Aranea, and Nellie?

Answer: Charlotte's children.

After Charlotte's egg sac opens, many of the baby spiders sail away on the warm updrafts of the spring wind, like balloonists. But three of them stay. Wilbur helps them decide on their names, and they become his friends. This is how Charlotte lives on: in her children.
