Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert live near which fictional village of Prince Edward Island?

Answer: Avonlea

Marilla and Matthew have lived on a small farm near Avonlea all their lives. They are a middle-aged brother and sister, neither of whom has ever married. Marilla takes care of the household duties while Matthew takes care of the farming duties.
2. What colour hair does Anne Shirley have?

Answer: Red

Decidedly red. Bright red in fact. Anne hates the colour of her thick, shiny hair and always has. When first we meet her, it is worn in two thick braids hanging down her back.
3. And what colour does Anne accidentally dye her hair in attempt to change its colour?

Answer: Green

While Marilla is out one day, naughty Anne buys some dye from a peddler and sets about dyeing her hair, knowing full well that she'll get into trouble for her actions, but prepared to deal with that in order to change the colour of her hated red hair. Unfortunately the dye doesn't turn out the lovely black colour it is supposed to and Anne is left with hair coloured a dull coppery green.
4. Whose head does Anne break a slate over during a school lesson?

Answer: Gilbert Blythe

Classmate Gilbert Blythe has been away sick, but on his return to school, he finds Anne irresistible. Unfortunately she doesn't return his feelings and usually ignores him and all boys. In an attempt to get her attention, he reaches over his desk one day, picks up one of her braids, and whispers, "Carrots, carrots!" Anne then notices him with a vengeance, leaps to her feet and smashes her slate over his head in anger.
5. Who is Anne's best friend?

Answer: Diana Barry

Diana is the plump and pretty dark-haired girl who lives on the farm a short distance from Green Gables. She is also in the same class as Anne at school. The two girls become friends immediately on their first meeting and remain that way all their lives.
6. Who do Anne and Diana accidentally jump on top of when she is fast asleep in the spare bedroom?

Answer: Aunt Josephine

Anne and Diana have been away on a rare evening's outing, and Anne has been given permission to sleep over at Diana's home. The greatest thrill of all for Anne is that she is going to be allowed to sleep in the coveted spare bed for the first time, something she's always longed to try.

While they are away however, Diana's elderly and crotchety Aunt Josephine has also come to stay that evening and is fast asleep in the spare bedroom. Anne and Diana, on their return to Diana's house, decide to race up the hall to see who will be the first to land, laughing and squealing, on the spare bed with its unfortunate occupant.
7. Anne is allowed to have Diana over as her very first afternoon tea guest one day while Marilla is away. What does she accidentally do to Diana?

Answer: Gets her intoxicated

Anne and Diana act out the role of grown-ups for this momentous occasion and speak and act very politely to each other with their best manners. That doesn't last long however and Anne soon offers Diana some of what she thinks is Marilla's raspberry cordial. Unfortunately she gets the bottles mixed up and Diana drinks several glasses of Marilla's home made red wine instead.

She staggers off home as drunk and giggly as can be - and once again Anne is in trouble over another of her continual mishaps.
8. After an unthinking comment made about her appearance, who does Anne lose her temper with and refer to, among other things, as old and fat?

Answer: Mrs Lynde

Mrs Rachel Lynde is Marilla's long time neighbour and friend. She is portly and a bit of a busy body, and always believes in speaking her mind, but has a heart of gold nonetheless. After making an unflattering and unthinking comment about Anne's appearance, she isn't prepared for the whirlwind of indignation that's the result. Anne is made to apologise of course, but every time Marilla remembers the incident afterwards, she's inclined to laugh at the look of astonishment on Mrs Lynde's face at Anne's onslaught.
9. Whose life does Anne save when she's dangerously ill with the croup?

Answer: Minnie May Barry

Because of Anne's background before she came to Green Gables, she is used to treating children with the croup. This is a coughing illness creating breathing difficulties and high fever. All the adults are out one night when a frightened Diana calls upon Anne to help her with her little sister who is almost dying from a sudden worsening of this condition. Anne saves the child's life and Mrs Barry is forever grateful and forgives Anne for her earlier mishap in getting Diana intoxicated.
10. Does Anne ever forgive Gilbert for calling her "Carrots"?

Answer: Yes

She does indeed. At the end of this delightful book, after the much loved Matthew has died, Gilbert gives up his position as teacher at Avonlea school so that Anne can take it to enable her to be near to Marilla whose eye sight has grown very bad. Not only that, but in future books, Anne and Gilbert are - well you'll have to read them to find out for yourself, won't you?
