Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As Tom was getting UNDRESSED for school, he heard a strange noise in the attic.

Answer: dressed

Although any of these words can complete the sentence, only "dressed" is an antonym for "undressed".
Strange sounds in the attic may be caused by animals such as squirrels, rats, birds, opossums or raccoons.
Some of these animals can spread diseases.
2. Tom tried to ignore the sound but it grew QUIETER.

Answer: louder

Quieter is the only option that makes sense. The adjective "quieter" suggests that the noise had reduced. "Louder" on the other hand suggests an increase in sound...the opposite.
3. Quietly, Tom crept DOWN the stairs prepared to face the intruder in the attic.

Answer: up

While basements can be found at the BOTTOM of buildings, attics are located at the TOP, just below the roof. One should therefore go UP the stairs rather than DOWN to find an attic.
4. Tom stood at the attic door for a moment. He was BOLD to turn the knob.

Answer: scared

Fear is not necessarily a bad thing. It's a natural emotion when a person senses danger. Since the natural thing to do is to move AWAY from the source of danger, fear helps to protect us. A "phobia" however is an unnatural fear and may require therapy.
5. Tom held his breath for a few seconds, afraid to INHALE.

Answer: exhale

Did you know to inhale means to breathe IN, while to exhale means to breathe OUT?
The air we breathe in has oxygen which the body needs to survive. We breathe out carbon dioxide because too much of it can be harmful to the body.
6. SLOWLY, Tom yanked open the door and threw a cup of water in the direction of the sound.

Answer: quickly

All of these words can complete the sentence sensibly but the antonym of "slowly" is "quickly". Rapidly and speedily are other antonyms of slowly.
By the way...a cup of water Tom? :-)
7. A TINY rat sprang out of a corner and chased after Tom.

Answer: large

Other antonyms of tiny include: big, gigantic and enormous.

Did you know that the African giant pouched rat can weigh 2 to 3 pounds?
A baby rat is called a kitten, a female rat a doe and a male rat a buck.
What do we call a group of rats? If you guessed "MISCHIEF", you are correct.
8. Tom ran INSIDE screaming like a banshee, "Help me, somebody help me!"

Answer: outside

A banshee is believed to be a female spirit who wails (cries aloud) when someone in the home is about to die.
9. Hearing the screams, the entire neighborhood came out with clubs and sticks to HINDER Tom.

Answer: help

To hinder something means to delay or prevent its progress.
Other antonyms for hinder include: aid, encourage, assist.
10. The neighbors were surprised to learn that Tom was afraid of a rat. Tom was left with a TEMPORARY nickname of "scaredy cat".

Answer: permanent

When something is temporary it lasts for a short time. A permanent thing lasts for a lifetime. Many adults still have nicknames they got as kids.
Other antonyms for temporary include: lasting, enduring and long-lived.
