Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. B + a grain = a small vessel for sailing on the water

Answer: boat

A grain = oat
B + oat = boat

Oats are a cereal grain grown for its seed. Humans can consume oats in foods like oatmeal or rolled oats but it is mainly used as livestock feed.

Boat can actually refer to a vessel of any size but in most cases boats are considered smaller than ships.
2. B + the conclusion of a story = to curve a line

Answer: bend

The conclusion of a story = end
B + end = bend

Bend is a town in Oregon that grew out of a ford on the Deschutes River. It is one of the few fords on this river that was known only to Native Americans until 1824 when it was first discovered by non-Native American Peter Skene Ogden. John C. Frémont and army survey teams were the next ones in the area.
3. B + water falling from the sky = a part of your body found in your head

Answer: brain

Water falling from the sky = rain
B + rain = brain

Rain is a form of precipitation along with snow, sleet, hail, drizzle, and graupel. Precipitation happens when the water vapor in the sky condenses enough to fall. Fog and mist are not precipitation because the water vapor does not condense but remains suspended in the atmosphere.
4. B + a running competition = a device that supports something else

Answer: brace

A running competition = race
B + race = brace

Braces are a common dental appliance many kids must wear to straighten their teeth. The dentist responsible for your braces is usually an orthodontist. Dental braces have actually been traced to 300 to 400 BC.
5. B + an avenue or boulevard = expansive or vast

Answer: broad

An avenue or boulevard = road
B + road = broad

In this case the addition of the B to road changes the vowel sound of the "oa" from a long o to an short aw sound. The word broad can be an adjective as it is here or a noun or an adverb. An antonym for broad would be narrow.
6. B + to be without something = the darkest color

Answer: black

To be without something = lack
B + lack = black

Black can be defined as lacking hue or brightness. In astronomy it is theorized that black holes exist but they cannot be observed directly. Only their effect on the space around them can be observed.
7. B + dash or move swiftly = an implement for grooming your hair

Answer: brush

Dash or move swiftly = rush
B + rush = brush

There are many different types of brushes, normally named after the item they brush such as a hair brush or a toothbrush. Brushes can be used for cleaning and scrubbing as well as applying something like paint or nail polish or makeup.
8. B + hobble = an airship

Answer: blimp

Hobble = limp
B + limp = blimp

Blimps are non-rigid airships that use the pressure of the gas in the envelope to maintain their shape rather than a frame like a zeppelin does. Blimps were used in Word War I and World War II by the US Navy for shore patrol. Today blimps hover over sporting events like football games.
9. B + something you open with a key = a large solid piece of wood

Answer: block

Something you open with a key = lock
B + lock = block

There are many different types of blocks. You may have played with blocks as a child. A concrete masonry unit is called a cement block. An engine block is the main part of the motor in a car. Block and tackle is a system of pulleys used in sailing.
10. B + a unit of measure for weight or volume = what a ball does when dropped on the floor

Answer: bounce

A unit of measure for weight or volume = ounce
B + ounce = bounce

Bouncing is actually a result of the laws of physics, specifically deflection. When one object collides (makes contact) with another object, then the speed at which the first object was travelling changes. Since the floor cannot absorb the speed of the ball as it travels through the air, it redirects the ball's energy and it travels away from the hard surface. This is deflection.
